Shabbat Bereishit
Candle Lighting: 18:32
Shabbat Ends: 19:37
It is a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose.
It is very important to know the exact candle-lighting time, as we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to kindle these lights after sunset. |

He alone knows what he has done with life. In the privacy of his own home, he looks in the mirror and sees himself. And from head to toe, things are not good.
So he says, "I should teach others? I should provide guidance?!"
And we tell him, yes, because if your soul has come to the world at this time, that is its purpose. For we live in a time when all those who know alef must teach alef and those who know what comes after alef must teach that too.
And G-d Above who formed you and placed you in these times knows with a complete knowledge who you are and what you are capable of accomplishing.

Shabbat Bereishis is the first Shabbat of the year. There is a famous saying: The way you establish yourself on Shabbat Bereishis, that is how the whole year is going to go....
What is so special about Shabbat Bereishis? Yes, it is the first Shabbat of the year, but there must be something unique that gives it the power to affect the whole coming year?
One of the aspects of Shabbat is (as explained in Talmud and Kabala), that Shabbat has the attribute of bringing completion and perfection to all matters that happened in the preceding week, as it says in the Torah (and we say it in the Kiddush over the wine on Friday night) "Vayechulu" - that heaven and earth were "completed" and attained perfection and "delight" on Shabbat.
This past week we celebrated the Holiday of Simchat Torah, a day fully devoted to Joy. Although throughout the whole month we had several holy days that express joy, but the "peak" was reached on Simchat Torah. So the Shabbat following Simchat Torah, Shabbat Bereishis, actually incorporates the "completion" of Simchat Torah. Therefore, it is definitely this Shabbat, Shabbat Bereishis, that will transmit blessings of Joy to us all, ensuring that this whole coming year will be a year full of Joy.
So let us seize the opportunity and celebrate this Shabbat with immense Joy, which will definitely attain for us a year full of Joy, happiness and only good in abundance!
Shabbat Shalom |
| The Parsha in a Nutshell
Genesis 1:1-6:8
G-d creates the world in six days. On the first day He makes darkness and light. On the second day He forms the heavens, dividing the "upper waters" from the "lower waters." On the third day He sets the boundaries of land and sea and calls forth trees and greenery from the earth. On the fourth day He fixes the position of the sun, moon and stars as timekeepers and illuminators of the earth. Fish, birds and reptiles are created on the fifth day; land-animals, and then the human being, on the sixth. G-d ceases work on the seventh day, and sanctifies it as a day of rest. G-d forms the human body from the dust of the earth and blows into his nostrils a "living soul." Originally Man is a single person, but deciding that "it is not good that man be alone," G-d takes a "side" from the man, forms it into a woman, and marries them to each other. Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden and commanded not to eat from the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil." The serpent persuades Eve to violate the command, and she shares the forbidden fruit with her husband. Because of their sin, it is decreed that man will experience death, returning to the soil from which he was formed, and that all gain will come only through struggle and hardship. Man is banished from the Garden. Eve gives birth to two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain quarrels with Abel and murders him, and becomes a rootless wanderer. A third son is born to Adam, Seth, whose tenth-generation descendant, Noah, is the only righteous man in a corrupt world. |

A BIT OF HUMOR
Morty visits Dr. Saul, the veterinarian, and says, "My dog, has a problem."
Dr. Saul says, "So tell me about the dog and the problem."
"It's a Jewish dog. His name is Irving and he can talk," says Morty.
"He can talk?" the doubting doctor asks.
"Watch this!" Morty points to the dog and commands: "Irving, Fetch!"
Irving, the dog, begins to walk toward the door, then turns around and says, "So why are you talking to me like that? You always order me around like I'm nothing. And you only call me when you want something. And then you make me sleep on the floor, with my arthritis. You give me this fahkahkta food with all the salt and fat, and you tell me it's a special diet. It tastes like dreck! YOU should eat it yourself! And do you ever take me for a decent walk? NO, it's out of the house, a short pish, and right back home. Maybe if I could stretch out a little, the sciatica wouldn't kill me so much! I should roll over and play dead for real for all you care!"
Dr. Saul is amazed, "This is remarkable! What could be the problem?"
Morty says, "He has a hearing problem! I said 'Fetch', not 'Kvetch'". | |
