It is a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose.
It is very important to know the exact candle-lighting time, as we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to kindle these lights after sunset. |

There are many kinds of barriers: Those from within and those from without. Barriers between people. Barriers that prevent you from doing good things. Barriers of your own mind and your own hesitations. There are the barriers that exist simply because you are a limited being.
Joy breaks through all barriers.

The Parsha in a Nutshell
The Sukkot and Shmini Atzeret Torah readings are from Leviticus 22-23, Numbers 29, and Deuteronomy 14-16. These readings detail the laws of the moadim or "appointed times" on the Jewish calendar for festive celebration of our bond with G-d--including the mitzvot of dwelling in the sukkah (branch-covered hut) and taking the "Four Kinds" on the festival of Sukkot; the offerings brought in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem on the festivals of Sukkot and Shmini Atzeret, and the obligation to journey to the Holy Temple to "to see and be seen before the face of G-d" on the three annual pilgrimage festivals--Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. |

A BIT OF HUMOR
An archeologist was digging in the Negev Desert in Israel and came upon a casket containing a mummy, a rather rare occurrence in Israel, to say the least. After examining it, he called Abe, the curator of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
"I've just discovered a 3,000-year-old mummy of a man who died of heart failure," the excited scientist exclaimed.
Abe replied, "Bring him in. We'll check it out."
A week later the amazed Abe called the archeologist. "You were right about both the mummy's age and cause of death. How in the world did you know?"
"Easy. There was a piece of paper in his hand that said, "10,000 Shekels on Goliath." |
