Shabbat Haazinu
Candle Lighting: 19:18
End of Shabbat: 20:23

It is a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose.

It is very important to know the exact candle-lighting time, as we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to kindle these lights after sunset.

Yes you should!
You can make a difference
now more then ever!
Thank you

GPS FOR THE SOUL

A common misconception is that teshuvah ("repentance") is simply an antidote to sin, and thus applies only to sinners and lowly people. In truth, teshuvah is the soul's return to and restoration of its original purity, and applies to every soul that has descended into the human state.

The Weekly Word
By: Rabbi Levi Y. GarelikRav -Rabbi of The European Synagogue

This Shabbat marks the transition from Rosh Hashana to Yom Kippur.

The day of Yom Kippur contains two opposite elements. Firstly, we are compared to angels: we dress in white, refrain from food and drink, spend much time in the prayer, all of which put us on a very lofty status; on the other hand,  we constantly proclaim that we have sinned, and confess those many sins repeatedly.

This can be explained by the proverb: "Develop success from failure. Discouragement and failures are the surest stepping stones for success".

Every station or stage in life has actions and thoughts that are appropriate to that particular situation. Consequently, relative to a person's current status, it is suitable and fitting that he act in a certain way. However, when one climbs the ladder of success and reaches a higher level, when a higher spiritual service is demanded, the previous steps, in comparison, are then considered "failures".

Due to the great elevation of Yom Kippur we come to realize how much more we can actually achieve, and therefore ask for "forgiveness" for the past, when we may have not reached our fullest potential, yet continue to look forward to a most bright, successful future. And we are confident that G-d has in store for us the best and sweetest year we've ever had yet!

We sincerely hope you benefit from your participation in the Yom Kippur services here at The European Synagogue, as we devote ourselves to reaching the highest heights that G-d has in store. Enjoy your journey as we join in song, prayer, and concurrent explanations and insights, as well as interactive involvement to make this day most relevant and meaningful to you.

Wishing everyone a happy and "successfully" sweet year... in Jerusalem!

Shabbat Shalom
The Parsha in a Nutshell

Chumashim
The greater part of the Torah reading of Haazinu ("Listen In") consists of a 70-line "song" delivered by Moses to the people of Israel on the last day of his earthly life.

Calling heaven and earth as witnesses, Moses exhorts the people to "Remember the days of old / Consider the years of many generations / Ask your father, and he will recount it to you / Your elders, and they will tell you" how G-d "found them in a desert land," made them a people, chose them as His own, and bequeathed them a bountiful land. The Song also warns against the pitfalls of plenty -- "Yeshurun grew fat and kicked / You have grown fat, thick and rotund / He forsook G-d who made him / And spurned the Rock of his salvation" -- and the terrible calamities that would result, which Moses describes as G-d "hiding His face." Yet in the end, he promises, G-d will avenge the blood of His servants and be reconciled with His people and land.

The Parshah concludes with G-d's instruction to Moses to ascend the summit of Mount Nebo, from which he will behold the Promised Land before dying on the mountain. "For you shall see the land opposite you; but you shall not go there, into the land which I give to the children of Israel."

A BIT OF HUMOR

Apple and Honey
A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday.
"I'd love to be six again," she replied.

On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and off they went to a local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Screaming Loop, and the Wall of Fear - everything there was! Wow!

Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park, her head reeling and her stomach upside down. Right to a restaurant they went, where her husband ordered her a big double burger along with extra fries and a refreshing soda.

Then it was off to a movie - the latest Star Wars epic, snacks, Pepsi Cola. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed. He leaned over and lovingly asked, "Well, dear, what was it like being six again?"

One eye opened. "You idiot, I meant my dress size."
