Shabbat Pinchas
Candle Lighting: 21:37
End of Shabbat: 23:03
Blessing Transliteration:
Boruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-olam A-sher Ki-de-shan-nu Be-mitz-vo-sov Ve-tzi-va-nu Le-had-lik Ner Shel Shabbat Ko-desh.
It is a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose.
It is very important to know the exact candle-lighting time, as we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to kindle these lights after sunset. |

Friday night Kabalat Shabbat 20:00 |
The Weekly WordBy: Rabbi Levi Y. Garelik -Rabbi of The European Synagogue
This Shabbat, when
we read in the Torah the portion of Pinchas, is the first Shabbat of the
"3 week mourning" period which commenced on Thursday the 17th
of Tammuz (July 9th) leading up to the 9th of Av (July 21), also
known as the "fast of Tish'a Bav".
On the 17th of Tammuz the
walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans
(in the year 69), and three weeks later, on the 9th of Av, the Holy Temple
was destroyed. As a result, for the past 2000 years this period has been
labeled as a time of mourning.
There are two ways to "commemorate" a
terrible destruction. One can cry, or one can rebuild. Basically, one can mourn
the past or one can look forward to the future by rebuilding.
While the Jews were in exile,
G-d told the prophet Ezekiel that by learning the laws that pertain to the Temple, it is as if the
people are rebuilding the House of G-d. So too in our times many have started
to intensify the study of the actual structure of the Holy Temple, as it is
explained in Ezekiel, Chapters 40-43; in the Talmud, Tractate of Middos; and in
Maimonides in his book regarding the laws of the Temple.
By doing this, we are sending
the message that we are into "rebuilding" and looking forward to when
we will merit to see The Third Temple as promised by the prophets.
Therefore, as we usually
conclude, join us in our EU Jewish Building, in The European Jewish
Library in memory of Marie Gordon, and at the various lectures offered there,
where you can hear and read and learn regarding the structure of the Temple
(which is very fascinating... just one wall of it attracts millions every year,
can you imagine what the building looks like?!). This is a library where you
don't simply learn, but you "build".
Shabbat Shalom! |
Yes you should!
You can make a difference
now more then ever!
Thank you

The Parsha in a Nutshell
Pinchas - Numbers 25:10- 30:1
Aaron's grandson, Pinchas, is rewarded for his act of zealotry in killing the Shimonite prince Zimri and the Midianite princess: G-d grants him a covenant of peace and the priesthood. A census of the people counts 601,730 men between the ages of 20 and 60. Moses is instructed on how the Land is to be divided by lottery among the tribes and families of Israel. The five daughters of Zelophehad petition Moses that they be granted the portion of the land belonging to their father, who died without sons; G-d accepts their claim and incorporates it into the Torah's laws of inheritance. Moses empowers Joshua to succeed him and lead the people into the Land of Israel. The Parshah concludes with a detailed list of the daily offerings, and the additional offerings brought on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh (first of the month), and the festivals of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret. |
A BIT OF HUMOR
Sam was out shopping in the mall when he meets his friend Abe outside the jewelers. Sam notices that Abe has a small gift-wrapped box in his hand. "So what have you just purchased Abe?" Sam asks. "Well, now that you've asked," replies Abe, "it's my Betty's birthday tomorrow and when I asked her this morning what she wanted for her birthday she said, 'Oh, I don't know, dear, just give me something with a lot of diamonds in it.'" "So what did you get her?" Sam asks. Abe replies, smiling, "I bought her a deck of cards." |
