It is a great mitzvah and responsibility to honor the Sabbath by lighting candles 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening. This unique commandment, entrusted to the Jewish woman, is rich with meaning and purpose.

It is very important to know the exact candle-lighting time, as we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to kindle these lights after sunset.

thought for the day

It's all about change.

Refraining from indulging in the pleasures of this world is only a fine preparation for avoda (service of G-d). Avoda itself is transforming the physical into a vehicle for G-dliness

Friday night Kabalat Shabbat 20:00
The Weekly Word
By: Rabbi Levi Y. GarelikRav -Rabbi of The European Synagogue

In the beginning of the Torah portion of Beha'aloscha, G-d commands Aaron, as High-Priest, to light the golden Menorah that stood in the Mishkan (the Tabernacle-the precursor to the HolyTemple) each day. The Menorah was made of one piece of solid gold, and had seven branches, each topped by a flame fueled by pure olive oil. Kabalah teaches us that there are seven personality types into which people can be generally categorized, and each is represented by a branch of the Menorah.

Although the Menorah was lit each day, its intended purpose was not to brighten the room in which it situated. The Menorah symbolized the light of G-d's teachings being spread from the inside of the Mishkan, where G-d's presence was clearly seen, to all parts of the world and the people who lived there. It is for this reason that the windows in the HolyTemple were made narrow on the inside and wider at the outer end, showing that G-d's light was meant to be disseminated amongst all peoples.

We learn from this directive in the Torah that each one of us, though each has a unique path in life, is represented in the branches of the Menorah, and our purpose is to shed light. Using the knowledge that we possess, and the talents and tools G-d has given us, we should try to inspire another person to do a good deed, to learn a bit of Torah, and to work together to bring more light, peace, and happiness to the world.

Shabbat Shalom!

Behaalotecha - Numbers 8:1- 12:16

Chumashim

Aaron is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary.

A "Second Passover" is instituted in response to the petition "Why should we be deprived?" by a group of Jews who were unable to bring the Passover offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G-d instructs Moses on the procedures for Israel's journeys and encampments in the desert, and the people journey in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year.

The people are dissatisfied with their "bread from heaven" (the manna) and demand that Moses supply them with meat. Moses appoints 70 elders, to whom he emanates of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses and is punished with leprosy; Moses prays for her healing and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery.

A BIT OF HUMORLaughing

Morris Rabinowitz in the late 1940's fled his native land of Germany. He sold all his assets and converted it to gold and then had 5 sets of solid gold false teeth made.

When he arrived in New York the customs official was perplexed as to why anybody would have 5 sets of gold teeth. So Morris explained.

"We Jews have two separate sets of dishes for meat products and dairy products but I am so kosher and religious I also have separate sets of teeth."

The customs official shook his head and said, "Well that accounts for two sets of teeth.  What about the other three?"

Morris then said "Vell, us very religious Jews use separate dishes for Passover, but I am so religious I have separate teeth, one for meat and one for dairy food.

The customs official slapped his head and then said, "You must be a very religious man with separate teeth for food and dairy products and likewise for Passover.  That accounts for four sets of teeth.  What about the fifth set?"

"Vell, to tell you the truth, once in a while I like a ham sandwich."
