| Greetings! |
After returning from a month's visit to the states in July, we brought back essential oils, herbs, lotions and creme bases to begin making samples of our own. These samples will be given out to friends for "feed-back"and critiquing.
My recipe today is Mediterranean and healthy. If you like salmon, you will enjoy it's flavor. | |

CAMPAIGN FOR SAFE COSMETICS |
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of nonprofit health, environmental and consumer groups, has demanded that the unregulated beauty industry get rid of toxins from their products.
This has really helped make it easier for us to shop for clean cosmetics. We have learned the buzzwords for toxic ingredients like paraben, phthalate and 1,4-dioxane.
More than 600 companies have signed the Campaign's Compact for the Global Production of Safe Health and Beauty Products-check out www.safecosmetics.org for the complete list. The 600 + companies have pledged to replace ingredients that are linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruptions and other negative health effects with safer alternatives.
Here is a list of a few safe companies: 1. Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics
2. Pangea Organics
This is a list of some companies that have not yet signed the Campaign's Compact: 1. L'Oreal
2. Revlon
3. Esteé Lauder
4. Avon
5. Procter and Gamble
You can look up "Take Action" on the safe cosmetics website and encourage the makers of your favorite beauty products to change their formulas for safety. The largest maker of salon-quality nail polish, OPI, was persuaded by consumers to remove two of its most toxic ingredients-dibutyl phthalate and toluene. OPI still uses formaldehyde but is looking into alternatives, according to Marisa Walker spokes person for the Breast Cancer Fund. | MOVE IT TO LOSE IT |
Breaking news: Standing by the watercooler may help you stay trim.
When researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia strapped an accelerometer (a devise that measures not just steps but movements) onto 168 healthy and active men and women for one week, they found that those who incorporated more breaks, like standing or walking, into their workdays were about 2.3 inches slimmer around the waist than those who just sat in their swivel chairs for hours on end. They also had healthier blood fats (lower triglycerides).
Breaks were as short as one minute (very doable!) and defined as anything but sitting.
So touch your toes at your desk, stand while on the phone, or, at the very least, stretch. Good Housekeeping Magazine, August 2008 |
