NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR DRY SKIN

Two BusinessmenOur skin requires moisture to stay soft and smooth. But it has a problem retaining moisture especially as we grow older.

Simple everyday routines, such as bathing and towel drying, actually take away moisture from the skin.

Nevertheless we can do a lot on our own to improve our skin, by using large amounts of moisturizers, bathing less and staying away from strong, drying soaps.

AHH-LOE VERA

aloe veraNature's skin soother

The exotic spiky plant with the thick serrated lances makes an attractive houseplant, but aloe vera may be best known as Mother Nature's remedy for soothing skin.

This perennial contains a thick, clear substance known simply as aloe gel, which is found widely in a host of topical over-the-counter preparations and cosmetics. This nourishing gel contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and phytochemicals.

A Familiar Remedy

After a day in the sun, slather on aloe vera gel, which immediately soothes and cools sun-heated skin. The gel creates a barrier that retains moisture, promotes healing, and appears to prevent infection.

Keep aloe gel in the family medicine cabinet, as it has several uses, notably for accelerating the healing of minor cuts and abrasions. "Aloe is rich in chemical compounds that speed healing by arresting pain and inflammation, encouraging cellular repair, and stimulating the immune system," says herbalist and remedies advisor Steven Foster.

"Freshly snipped aloe leaves are the ultimate homegrown first aid." Evidence suggests it also helps diminish psoriatic lesions, eczema, and ringworm.

Ingesting Aloe

Aloe's multitude of skin benefits are not confined to topical gels. Taken internally, aloe juice is best known for its laxative effect. In addition, aloe vera juice helps remove toxins from the system and may even be helpful for easing joint inflammation associated with arthritis.

SOUTHERN ITALIAN BAKED FISH WITH CAPERS AND OLIVES

italian baked fishMany kinds of fish are appropriate for this recipe, including tuna, swordfish, thick salmon, sea bass, haddock, cod, snapper, or grouper fillets.

This dish could as easily be Greek or Italian - if you want to make it more Italian, add a tablespoon of fresh (or a teaspoon of dried) chopped oregano with the bread crumbs.

4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 pounds boneless fish
1 cup very ripe tomatoes, peeled and seeded, or 1 cup drained canned tomatoes
½ teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon drained capers, rinsed
¼ cup chopped pitted green olives, preferably large imported Italian olives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
½ cup unseasoned dried bread crumbs

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Use a teaspoon of oil to coat the inside of a baking dish large enough to hold all the fish in one layer. Place the fish in it.

Chop the tomatoes and mix with the sugar and lemon juice in a small bowl. Add the capers and olives and mix again. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper as desired. Pile the tomato sauce on top of the fish pieces.

Distribute the bread crumbs over the top and drizzle on the remaining oil. Place in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the fish is thoroughly cooked, the sauce very bubbly and browned. Makes 6 to 8 servings

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Dry Skin - Consume Omega 3 rich foods and oils, and balance with gamma-linoleic acids like borage or evening primrose oil (1,000-2,000 mg, daily).

Aloe Vera - Our kids both worked at a fast-food chain as teen-agers. Sometimes when working on the french-fries, they would burn themselves and run for the aloe plant in the window. The gel in the plant worked every time

Southern Italian Baked Fish with Capers and Olives - Tomatoes, lemon juice, sugar, capers and olives . . . sounds delicious for almost any kind of fish. An oven bake makes it easy, too.
