AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE
Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.
- If Chrysler calls about your service, it could be the CEO
Free Press, May 3
It's Chrysler calling.
The Auburn Hills automaker's top 300 executives and directors are now going to be calling, on average, one customer a day to inquire about their satisfaction under a new Customer First program unveiled this week to senior managers, according to an internal e-mail obtained by the Free Press.
- Detroit's woes clearer to outsiders
The Detroit News, May 2 "Cash is fact," says Chrysler LLC product guru Jim Press, "and profit is fiction."
Interesting aphorism coming from a guy whose privately held company is obliged to disclose neither to the public. But in a town that for decades has measured success by the market share its automakers claim and the profits they book with accounting gimmicks -- instead of actual cash generated -- the former Toyota Motor Corp. exec has it exactly right.
-
A car with a window crank? No way! USA Today, May 3
Many people contemplating an entry-level small car for the first time in a while - such as gas-price-conscious buyers trading down or parents shopping for their 2008 college grad - may be surprised at the features on today's models.

NEW E-LAWS ADVISOR FROM THE DOL
The U.S. Department of Labor has unveiled the FirstStep Recordkeeping, Reporting and Notices elaws Advisor - its latest tool to help employers comply with federal employment laws. By using this tool, employers can easily determine which recordkeeping, reporting and notice requirements apply to them under the major laws administered by the Department.
This elaws Advisor has been integrated with the revised and expanded FirstStep Poster and FirstStep Employment Law Overview Advisors. All three advisors help employers identify the federal employment laws relevant to them and then explain how to comply with the requirements.
This new suite of elaws Advisors is available at www.dol.gov/elaws/firststep.
Elaws Advisors are free, Web-based tools designed to help employers and workers understand the department's major employment laws. By asking a series of questions, the advisors simulate a conversation with a Department of Labor expert and guide users to customized information explaining the requirements of each law.
The department offers more than 25 other elaws advisors covering a wide range of employment law topics, such as minimum wage and overtime, child labor, veterans' workplace rights, health and retirement benefits, and workplace safety and health.
For more information, visit www.dol.gov/elaws. |
