What's New for You at GABL
As summer comes to an end, school begins once again - and the heat starts to break, everyone in the GABL organization has been working hard to prepare for the upcoming fall and winter basketball league seasons.
Actually, this is a process that starts each year as soon as the previous season ends. We review and discuss every facet of our basketball programs so that we can continue to offer the BEST league and environment for our participants.
Allow me to cover "What's New for You at GABL" for the upcoming winter season:
-
Addition of 1st grade 5-on-5 league for boys and girls
-
Change in playing rules for 4th grade teams
-
Elimination of the "team fee" for boys teams
-
A separate competitive level league for 5th-8th grade boys and girls
These changes are enhancements to all of the other reasons why GABL is the best league in the Metro Kansas City area. Allow me to list just a few of many:
- NO admission charge for league games
- Boys and girls programs from Pre-K through high school
- Team AND individual entries are accepted in grades 3-8
- Clock stoppage on all whistles in grades 1-8
- No geographical restrictions on team formation
- Teams are grouped into divisions by level of ability
- Uniforms provided for 1st-4th grades and high school teams
- Sportsmanship program for players, coaches and parents, including team sportsmanship awards
- Post-season tournaments for grades 4-8
- 8th Grade All-Star Classic at The College Basketball Experience
- Highest level of officials available in our area
- Clinics and training programs for coaches
For 36 years, GABL has been the preeminent league in our area - and as we begin our 37th year, we look to offer the finest program yet for our participants.
I personally look forward to your joining - and enjoying our league this year. Let us know if we are meeting your expectations - and how we can improve.

| The Importance of Regular Stretching and Warm-Up Routines | |
By Matt Humpert, ATC, SMMC SportsCare
Teaching young athletes to take care of their bodies when they are just starting to become active in a sport can pay huge dividends later on in their athletic careers. This starts with emphasizing a warm-up and stretching routine before every practice or game. Even just having them start with a light jog around the court a few times followed by some basic stretching to hit the major muscle groups will reduce the risk of injury. This also can be a great time to talk to the athletes about injury prevention, or about the importance of icing sore muscles or joints after a hard practice. It also can be a time for the coach to go over the practice schedule for the day, and that way the time used for stretching is not devoid of learning.
Areas of the body to stretch before activities.
Legs
Hamstrings
Quad
Calf muscle
Upper body
Triceps
Biceps
Chest muscles
Shoulders
Low back/hips
Lumbar stretches
Groin
There are many different ways to target these areas. The best idea is for each coaching staff to design stretches they would like to see used. Next, teach the captains of the team the stretches, and when the first practice takes place, take a few minutes and go over the routine with the whole team and stress the importance of a proper warm-up. At the next practice, have the captains of the team, or select different players every week, to lead the team in a warm-up. It can also be beneficial to have a stretching routine at the end of a practice or game session also. |
