Manufacturing "Renaissance" Underway -- How Do We Sustain It?
By Dan Swinney

From the Chicago Tribune, March 29th:

Improbable as it seems, the brightest spot so far in the nation's spotty economic recovery is a sector long considered all but dead:  good, old-fashioned manufacturing. Factories are churning...

"We could have a renaissance here," said Ron Bloom, President Barack Obama's manufacturing czar.... Fed Reserve Chair Bernanke said, "Indeed... manufacturing has been leading the economy so far...The basis for that optimism is emerging companies such as Nanosolar, Inc. which is riding a wave of demand for 'green energy.'"

We have been talking about the "renaissance" in manufacturing since 2005, when the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council was created. We knew then what the nation is just now coming to realize: for everyone's benefit, manufacturing must be the anchor of our society.

Rita Athas of World Business Chicago joins CMRC Co-Chairs
The Renaissance Council extends a very warm welcome to Rita Athas, our newest CMRC Co-Chair. Rita is executive director of World Business Chicago, a public-private partnership formed by Mayor Daley to bring and retain business in Chicago.

"We are very excited that Rita will be joining the Renaissance Council," says Dan Swinney, CMRC executive director. "World Business Chicago has a remarkable track record of promoting our city and growing our local economy. Rita's participation as a co-chair shows the depth of the city's commitment to support manufacturing in Chicago."

Business Opportunity for Manufacturers | The Hero Pipe
The Hero PipeMike Wielgart, a local firefighter, has invented a device that allows fire departments to deliver water or other fire suppressants into high rise fires from the floor below.

Last December, the Chicago Fire Department had to wait 3.5 hours to access a burning floor in a South Loop high rise fire that killed at least one person. This device would have gotten water into the floor in just 30 minutes.

Mike is looking for a local manufacturer to assemble his new prototyped product, The Hero Pipe, which is essentially an aluminum pipe and frame with a few complexities. Based on interest from the New York City Fire Department and others, we estimate current demand for approximately 1,000 units.

Mike has his own company and would simply pay the manufacturer for production. Mike would love to have a sample at a firefighter trade show on April 30, 2010.

Is your company interested in manufacturing this product? If so, please contact Bill Vogel at bvogel@clcr.org or (773) 534-6300 ext. 46326 for a complete Request for Quote.
