Support our Students
|
It takes more than a traditional high school budget to help our students engineer their futures.
We need to invest in our world class machine shop, college- and career-prep program, and work-based projects and activities.
For example, our After School Matters beverage marketing team needs $800 to brand and sell their new product.
Please help by sending us a check, made out to the Center for Polytechnical Education, at 3411 West Diversey, Suite 10, Chicago, Illinois 60647.

| Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky visits Austin Polytech | US Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois' 9th district has heard great things about Austin Polytech, so she came by on
April 12 to check it out for herself.
A group of SkillsUSA students led Rep. Schakowsky on a tour of the school. She was impressed by Junior Stranja Burge, who explained the class assignment in Mr. Slater's Digital Electronics course.
In the Manufacturing Technology Center, Mr. Obrien showed Rep. Schakowsky how to operate the CNC Lathe. She promised to follow up with Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, who suggested that students manufacture and sell parts for CTA trains.
After the tour, the SkillsUSA students to shared stories with Rep. Schakowsky about a recent APA field and all the
wonderful teachers and programs they've experienced at the school.
Mr.
Swinney and Mrs. Brazier concluded the visit by summarizing the impact of upcoming budget cuts and
explaining the need for federal government assistance from leaders like Rep. Schakowsky to support APA's unique educational programs. |

Sophomores Visit Mazak for Career Day
| On March 18, 12 sophomores visited Mazak,
the world's largest machine tool manufacturer. The students saw 16 CNC
Milling Machines
and Lathes produce various parts.
They also heard Mazak employees
outline the importance of manufacturing in America, and the many
interesting opportunities for employment.
Students were proud to see
that Mazak's machining center is very similar to APA's Manufacturing
Technology Center, a high-tech training facility on the school's first floor.
Latayshia Threets was first in line to take a
souvenir part that she saw machined. "It was cool to see how they made
this part," she said, "and how quickly the machines can cut up that material."

Tech Tigers: Robotics Update
| On March 20, APA students Arenique Green and Aaron Harris paid a visit to this year's FIRST Robotics Challenge at the UIC Pavillion. They were joined by Mrs. Erica Swinney Stein, Community Programs Director; Ms. Antigone Sharris, APA Robotics Advisor; and Michael Sharris, Ms. Sharris' son.
Although the Tech
Tigers did not compete this year because of funding challenges, Mrs.
Swinney Stein joined Arenique and Aaron to check out the competition. We are
gearing up for next year!
"Robotics provides the ideal intersection
between academics, professional development and competitive sports for
young people," says Mrs. Swinney Stein, who will be helping the team get up and
running for the next school year.
"I can't wait to get back in there,
its so much fun!" says Aaron Harris, who participated in the Tech Tigers robotics teamduring his freshman year.
