Fishing Report - Hyde Pro Staff

Shenandoah Valley -Virginia

North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River: Both are too cold for productive smallmouth bass fishing.  Another month or so should provide a different story, with the exact timing dependent on the arrival of a spring thaw.  Once these rivers are free of ice and the temperatures rise into the mid 40's start looking for big smallmouth bass to begin looking for spawning areas.  I like to use a Teeny 200 or Sink Tip III paired with a large streamer like a #4 Magnum Chub for these first active smallmouth of the year.

Local Valley Streams (Stocked Trout and Delayed Harvest): These streams are starting to be productive.  With the recent rains/ snows, the water levels are coming up nicely.  Nymphs and streamers fished slowly along the bottom near deep cuts and at the tails of riffles will be the most productive technique for overall success.  On overcast days in which the high climbs into the mid 40's expect to find fish feeding on Midges, BWO's, Little Dark Stoneflies and the occasional Caddis.  A dry fly like a Mr. Rapidan or Olive Delta Wing Caddis #14 followed by a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head or a Miracle Dark Stonefly size #14 roughly 18 inches under it have been productive combinations.

Native Brook Trout Streams (Mountain Trout Streams): The streams along the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains are still covered with a fair amount of ice right now.  The Brookie eggs are still waiting for warmer water to hatch, which means they are still in the nests and will be through the end of February.  Please refrain from fishing these streams until the first week of March for this reason.  Once March arrives, watch closely for a warming trend to turn the Brookies on after their long winter nap.  When things warm up, take along a handful of #14 nymphs (I like a Mr. Rapidan BH and a Miracle Dark Stonefly), a few Mr. Rapidan Parachutes #16 and a few #18 Little Dark Stonefly Dry.

Michigan

Coming out of Winter's Woods this week, the fishing up till now hasn't been bad at all for steelhead!!  With January in the rear view we look forward to warmer, longer days with more receptive fish willing to take Swung Streamers and Indicator presentations with even more frequency, this all before the spring invasion of fisherman in middle March.  Next to May, February is Michigan's most overlooked fishery yielding the best winter bite we have; that coupled with the highest concentration of steelhead the river sees all year, there is absolutely ZERO reason to wait till March!!  Try some Clowns, select Stone Nymph variations, even some buggy Hex... For those of you swinging, try some blue flash in your bugs but don't forget the GO TO pattern...  Giant Egg Sucking Leaches!!  When you're nymphing, keep your rod high to limit the amount of line on the water to mend while also subtracting the amount of line you need to strip through your guides per cast; this giving way to less ice in the guides per hour because you are bringing in less water through your rod that would otherwise ice up!!  Give a call for some great angling opportunities before the parade shows.... 231-898-4832
