| MAKING A DIFFERENCE |
DEBRA SWIHART
was named
Volunteer of the Month
for May 2011
 | |
Debra on Easter Sunday with her hand-made fascinator
|
Debra Swihart is a woman who takes the practice of divine hospitality to "the next level." She really under-stands that being of service in support of others' enjoyment adds real richness to life. Her keen eye, great taste, exuberant sense of style, and fearless ways with a hot-glue-gun make her events joyful and memorable. She's always lent a hand for any social occasion and has brought treats to class on Wednesdays that wound up being entire feasts. What can we say but "Debra, you make a difference." Thank you.

| OUR PURPOSE |
This Center exists to support all people with the transformation of their lives. We do this by teaching Spiritual Principle and by celebrating the Promise of Living.
Our philosophy, outlook and practice is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Ernest Holmes. Our basic textbook is "The Science of Mind" by Dr. Holmes.
Our founding pastor was Dr. David J. Walker. We honor his legacy by adhering to the essence of the Science of Mind teachings and by treating to know "that the innermost God and the highest God are one and the same."
The purpose of life is to strike a balance between acknowledging our completeness and enjoying our creativity.
Dr. David J. Walker

What Inspires Me

I recently had the pleasure of being a participant in a workshop called: Leaving the Past for Good. If you say that aloud, you'll quickly realize there are two meanings to the expression "for good." One meaning is to never to go back--leaving the past for good--kaput. Adios! The other meaning implies moving forward, toward a greater experience than the one we might be having.
Leaving the Past for Good, taken either way, is a wise thing. If we look at it as getting over our past, setting aside all hurts and disappointments and once and for all, giving up telling our "story" about how it was supposed to be, then that's a very good thing indeed.
Some of us might have great memories and feelings about the past however. We might feel that there's nothing to "get over" because we have so many pleasant memories. If that's the case it would do us well to ask ourselves, Do I have more memories than dreams?
If the answer is, Yes, then perhaps it's time to reorient ourselves. Be glad for what good there was, of course. But get busy creating new ideas, new visions, new dreams, and new goals. The only truly wise way to live is to have such a compelling vision of our future that we are drawn into it. Life becomes irresistible and something to relish.
I am inspired every time I hear people talk about what they honestly plan to achieve in life. Let's all declare that the days of "I dunno" are over. Make choices, coin ideas, have plans and ambitions. Allow yourself to be pulled by a vision of a wonderful world for you and for all people everywhere.
It's never to late to start. At the age of 83, Thomas Jefferson wrote to a colleague, I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. Words to live by, don't your think?

Reviews Women of Spirit enjoyed their first Annual Women's Retreat in April. It was a day spent cultivating body, mind and spirit with drumming, yoga, hiking and (I heard) superb food.
Baby2Baby Mothers' Day Baby Shower
We celebrated Mother's Day by hosting a baby-shower for the benefit of Baby2Baby. Dozens of us purchased all kinds of infant-related goods and clothing. Baby2Baby is a Los Angeles-based non-profit that distributes, free of charge, these goods to their client families with infants. This is what I call "purposeful fun." Thanks to all who participated.
Used Book Sale
May was a busy month. We sponsored a first-time Used Book Sale. Many thanks to all who brought in books they were "complete" with to create a large inventory of interesting, useful, and incredibly inexpensive books. There were plenty of treasures to be had. It was such fun we extended it to two weeks. I think we'll do this again next year. |

Previews
Mr Cooper Neal has announced that he'll be retiring from the position of Center Administrator at the end of June 2012. Mr. Neal has served in that position since the Center's creation in 1989. As The Center's first and only Administrator, he supported Dr. David Walker in every possible way and has been a constant and joyful presence on Sundays from the very beginning. He welcomed us at the Scottish Rite building, then the Westwood Playhouse, next at the Wilshire Theatre, then the Fine Arts Theatre and now the Harmony Gold Theatre. Mr. Neal has been there-- rain or shine, earthquakes, bike races or marathons, and always with the warmest of smiles. Thank you, Cooper, for your service and laughter and love. He says that he'll "be around" on Sundays so there really is no "good-bye" to say. But join us for a tribute reception as we say Thank YOU after service on Sunday, June 24th.

Spiritual Mind Treatment
I SURRENDER TO A HIGHER IDEA
Edward L. Brown R.Sc.P.
In this holy moment, I recognize my unity with The One, God. From God, all things are born; to God, all things return. My heart and mind are open to the realization of the Higher Idea. I am receptive to the vast reservoir of Divine Intelligence in which I live. With a sense of wondrous anticipation, I let go of any preconceived notions I may have and expand my horizons.
I am Truth in action. As such, I consciously choose to move beyond boundaries, experiencing a deeper connection with the Great Unknown. The Unknown is not unknowable, and in It I find my greater Self. I continuously evolve, opening the petals of my budding consciousness to reveal the flowering beauty at the center of my being. I am God made manifest. This is the Truth as I Surrender to a Higher Idea. I NOW let go and know this to be the Truth of my being. And So It Is.

From The Perennial Philosophy
If you wish what you need to be given to you without your having to search for it, turn away from it and concentrate on your Lord; you will receive it if God wills. And if you gave up your needs entirely and were occupied only with God, He would give you all the good things you wish for in this world and in the other; you would walk in Heaven as well as on the earth; and more than that, since the Prophet (on him be blessings and peace) has said, in the very words of his Lord: "He who by remembering Me is distracted from his petition will receive more than those who ask." Classes Beginning in July
Tuesdays July 3, 10, 17, 24 @ 7pm - or - Saturdays July 7, 14, 21, 28 @ 10:30am Tuition: Free of Charge
We usually take the summer off but there are simply too many great things to talk about. We're going to try something new in July.
We will be offering a four-week class based on Dr. David Walker's book "You Are Enough." There will be no tuition charged for the class--its' free!
Because we prefer smaller, rather than larger class groups, we will have one session on Wednesday evenings and one session on Saturday mornings. You may come to either one.
For those who do not have the book, copies will be available for sale on Sundays and at the class space as well.

Lessons Of Truth
SPRITUAL AWARENESS
Rev. Marian G. Moon
The purpose of treatment is to bring one's consciousness to the level of spiritual perfection. Dr. Holmes said it is not important how we go about this. But every thought, affirmation, denial and declaration we make should be purposed for a highest level of spiritual acceptance of the truth of being.
Treatment, therefore, should always be based on the assumption that there is a perfect pattern at the center of everything that never changes nor can it be destroyed by any experience to the contrary. Sometimes our expression seems to deny this, yet this truth can be uncovered by spiritual insight and awareness. Treatment helps us gain this insight and awareness. it clears our thought of erroneous beliefs that tend to condition consciousness.
In our treatment work we must believe this and continuously work to clarify our minds until we do accept the truth. A simple denial of a condition followed by a clear conviction of truth can change one's consciousness.
We generate a consciousness of spiritual conviction by demonstration through clarifying our thought and realization of truth. Consistency in spiritual awareness makes it easier to consciously know the truth in time of need. Through practice we gain spiritual awareness and prove the principle.

THE FINAL WORD
The Parade
How exhilarating it was to march
along the great boulevards
in the sunflash of trumpets
and under all the waving flags-
the flag of ambition, the flag of love.
So many of us streaming along-
all of humanity, really-
moving in perfect step,
yet each lost in the room of a private dream.
Billy Collins
Billy Collins ( March 22, 1941) is an American poet, appointed as Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003. He is a Distinguished Professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York and is the Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Winter Park Institute, Florida.
