| MAKING A DIFFERENCE |
BENNY HARRIS
was named
Volunteer of the Month
for August
Since I began teaching classes at the Center in September 2010, Bennie Harris has been the Registrar for the classes--all of them. He has been a part of every class that I've taught--as Registrar and as active participant.
What is so special about Mr. Harris is that he really understands something about the classroom experience: he know that every class is an opportunity for Truth to be revealed to each and every student. He not only makes sure that each student enrolls and signs in but he also offers a warm welcome which is joyful and sincere. He is the first person in the building at night, making sure that all is in order. He makes the coffee (bless his heart) straightens chairs and, most importantly, sets a conscious Intention for the experience that is about to unfold.
Bennie Harris truly understands that joy and power will be known when one fully participates in an intentional community. Thank you for all the others ways you contribute to the Center. Bennie, you make a difference!

| OUR PURPOSE |
This Center exists to support all people with the transformation of their lives. We do this by teaching Spiritual Principle and by celebrating the Promise of Living.
Our philosophy, outlook and practice is based on the pioneering work of Dr. Ernest Holmes. Our basic textbook is "The Science of Mind" by Dr. Holmes.
Our founding pastor was Dr. David J. Walker. We honor his legacy by adhering to the essence of the Science of Mind teachings and by treating to know "that the innermost God and the highest God are one and the same."
The purpose of life is to strike a balance between acknowledging our completeness and enjoying our creativity.

What Inspires Me
Just this week, Steve Jobs announced his retirement from the leadership of the company he founded -- Apple. Even if we don't own one of his products, we all know about them and the impact they've had on "the way we live now." At the very end of this newsletter, I gave Mr. Jobs "The Final Word" because his passion for digital products is only surpassed by his willingness to follow his own guidance. Over the decades we have read about his unique (but not necessarily genteel) style of leadership. The success of Apple has been driven by his utter confidence in his self-reliance and in his drive to "make wonderful products that people will want to have."
What his experience has in common with Dr. Holmes and all the Great Teachers, is that there is something within that knows. That something is called many things -- Intuition, Heart, the Self, the Spark, the Daemon, the Divine Indwelling, the Christ, or The Thing Itself. By whatever name, it is a part of universal consciousness that we cannot only use but also rely on. At the beginning of each Sunday Celebration, we affirm that "the Kingdom of God is within and we will experience this Kingdom to the degree we become conscious of it." It exists for our use, in this lifetime, to bless us in all the ways we can imagine.
Steve Jobs' fullness of life (aka: success) has been driven by his total reliance on Self. Let's all make a pledge to be as Self- Reliant as we can imagine. Let's exercise that idea and become stronger and stronger in it. Let's commit to demonstrating all the good that Life can create through us starting today--right now. Are you willing?
All is Well, Life is Good, We are Truly Blessed ~ Rev. John

Women of Spirit were busy this summer. Not only did they begin the month in service at the Downtown Women's Center but they also organized a field trip!
On Sunday, August 21st a congenial group went to the Griffith Park Observatory to tour the facility and see the ongoing presentation "Centered In The Universe". |

Annual Pet Blessing - Sunday October 2nd Our 2nd Annual Blessing of our Pets will take place on the first Sunday in October. All who have four legged, winged, or other non-human members of their family, are invited to bring them with you to the Center to be recognized and blessed. As our parade of blessings takes the full service, there will be no lecture on that day. If you are an animal appreciator, this is a moving and inspiring day. It can also be a great day to bring children, grand-children or other friends with you for this special treat.
New Member Orientation / Class As is our custom we'll be taking in new members in October. Anyone who has successfully completed one SOM 100 or SOM 200 level class (8 weeks of book study) is eligible to apply for membership, attend our Orientation class and formally join the Center as an active member.
New Member class will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 7pm at the Center office. At that time, we'll get to know each other and discuss the "rights and responsibilities" that membership entails.
On New Member Sunday, October 16th, you will join us on the Platform for recognition as a part of the regular Sunday Celebration. If you have decided that you are ready to make your spiritual growth a priority in your life, this is a good time to consider membership. The best is yet to be!

The above graphic is the work of New York graphic designer Toby Ng. It's a beautiful way to display something fascinating. Notice that right after Christians, 24 of the 100 people would not belong to any of the other "major" faith tradtions. We live in a big world and it always does us well to remember with whom we're sharing our beautiful planet.

Treatment for September
DIVINE RIGHT ACTION IS HAPPENING JoAnne Worley R.Sc.P.
There is one Mind, one Divine Intelligence, operating in, around and through us, as us, because it is us. I choose to call this Divine Power, God.
As co-creators with Divine Intelligence, we are responsible for our healthy bodies. All of our mental activities reflect the joy and happiness we take in maintaining our health.
We are grateful that we live in the divine flow of abundance. We have all that we need, and more, and even more to share. We realize that money is God in action. and we use it intelligently, for the comfort and well-being of ourselves, our loved ones, and everyone on the planet. We are all worthy of great abundant lives.
All the people in our lives are loving, supportive and fun to be with. We acknowledge that we are worthy of great good friends, loved ones and business associates. We willingly allow love and friendship to be a part of our lives.
As we do our work, we are grateful for the opportunity to be creative. We accept the abundant flow of creative ideas that are always available as we passionately carry out the realization of these new ideas. Great, good productivity is the outcome of these ideas. It is our joy and pleasure to work and create with Divine Intelligence. We are all incredibly blessed.
We gratefully acknowledge that Divine Right Action is happening in all of our lives, right now, as we release this treatment to Law. And so it is.

From The Perennial Philosophy
True charity--we might call it "integral charity"-- gives nothing without giving inwardly something better: the art of giving requires that to the material gift should be added a gift of the soul: this is to forget the gift after having given it, and this forgetfulness is like a fresh gift. Intrinsically, that virtue alone is good which is in a certain way unconscious of itself and, as a result, becomes neither egoistic charity nor proud humility. As an old proverb has it, "Do good and throw it into the sea; if the fish swallow it and man forgets it, God will remember it.

Lessons Of Truth
TRAINING THOUGHT Rev. Marian G. Moon In order to use thought effectively one should train their mind to think from pure consciousness. Most people seem to accumulate beliefs that clutter their thought with concepts that oppose the divine reality of being. This interferes with pure awareness in its expression. Because we have made these a part of our consciousness it seems to inhibit the desire for something better. In other words, it affects the way we experience life. Treatment or affirmative prayer helps to resolve or clear these thoughts and think from pure consciousness. By uncovering false ideas we can think independently of conditions and reason from pure awareness. We are then able to think and act form this pure consciousness. Treatment is clear thinking. It can establish universal order in our personal lives. One treatment would accomplish this if it was backed with the absolute conviction of our word. Most people, however, have realized it takes consistent practice to arrive at this consciousness where real change takes place. This is training the mind to think what we want to experience The practice of training the mind to think a certain way requires attention to the creative process. It is a matter of aligning one's thought with the perfect mind of God which thinks only pure ideas for expression. Each time we do this we open ourselves to the free flow of creative ideas which have nothing to inhibit their expression. Clearing the mind of false ideas is definitely a part of the creative process for new ideas to express. This practice will train the mind to think constructively from pure awareness.

The Final Word
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." Steve Jobs
