It's not the universe; it's God
People are using the word 'universe' more and more when they mean to say 'God'. Why hesitate to say 'God'? It's a great word. No doubt the word 'universe' is also good, but it is not a synonym for 'God'. You may argue that God has countless names, and therefore 'universe' is one of His names also. However, the reality is that many prefer to use this word not as a synonym but as a replacement. God did not retain me as a lawyer, simply because (1) I am not a lawyer, and (2) He does not need a defense team. That being said, I would still like to fight His case. The universe is revealed by God; it is not God. How would you feel if after making dessert, you were called Chocolate Pudding? Imagine being referred to as 'Cheese Sandwich' or 'Cup of tea.' Well, you may say that God has no ego and that He doesn't mind which name you give to Him. You are right. The real problem is this! By calling God 'the universe' we are removing ourselves from our Creator. By not addressing Him as God, we are ignoring Him. What we are really saying is that the creation is larger than the Creator. I lobby to call our Creator 'God.' He is addressed variously as Paramatma (the Supreme Soul), Bhagavan, Ishvar, Allah, Khuda, Ahur Mazda, Sat Shri Akal, Ram, Krishna, Shiv etc. There is no lack for names of God. But please.....not Universe! Besides, when you are in trouble, the first words that come out of your mouth are - Oh my God! Have you ever said - Oh my universe? I rest my case!
