Words of Wisdom

Bother to care

It is all too easy to bury our head under the sand and pretend that everything is good.  It is easy to hit the snooze button in the face of alarming situations and go right back to sleep.  After all, what difference does it make to us if a stranger is being mistreated?  He is nothing to us.  How does it harm us if there is suffering in some other family in some other part of the world?  As long as it is not our own family!

No!  We must care.  If you tolerate injustice done to another, you will have to face injustice one day yourself.  If you say and do nothing seeing others in need, you can be certain that the same will happen to you one day.  Our indifference towards others has a way of acting like a boomerang and coming right back to us.

Of course you are not God.  But do not forget that you are a child of the magnanimous Creator who cares about the welfare of all of us.  His love is evident through the breeze that blows and the water that flows.  It is manifested in the form of mountains that protect us from the mighty winds and the soil that nourishes.  He clearly shows us that we too must care.  And the ones who dedicate their lives for the sake of others offer great inspiration to the rest of us.

Those of you following the spiritual path must understand the difference between caring and attachment.  These are two different concepts.  Do not become indifferent to the pain of others and claim that you are 'unattached.'

Do bother to care!
