Try your utmost to be good

Taking an objective look at ourselves, we discover that we spend much of our time trying to look good in the eyes of others.  We do not wish to appear ignorant although we may be.  We do not want to be perceived as being selfish or rude, although we may really be both.

A couple may be fighting bitterly, but if they see a stranger approaching, they start acting as if they were two bodies but one soul.  Once the stranger leaves, they resume their bickering and fighting.  When a pretty girl walks by, the overweight man sucks in his stomach, trying to pass as someone who is as fit as a fiddle.  When a good looking man passes by, the woman tries her best to look attractive.  When company is expected, the entire family starts cleaning.  It is obvious that we place great importance on the opinion others have of us.

All the efforts that we make in trying to appear good would be better spent in trying to actually 'be' good.  The question is, "Why be good?"  The answer is that everything we do impacts our life.  When we try to be good, we enhance our true worth as humans.  We add to our self-esteem, and encourage ourselves to become even better.  When we succeed, we are more likely to improve ourselves further.

There is a tremendous room for improvement within us.  Let us take the opportunity to become better, not just look good in front of others.

Yours,
Didi Ji
