"Learn from Me, for I am humble and gentle... and you will find rest for your soul" Matthew 28:11
|
It snowed this week. Lots of snow. After the windy pace and piling of inches, a beautiful blanket quieted our world and for a few moments, everything was pristine. Untouched, and sparkling.
But just as quickly as it came, the white snow was immediately disturbed, leaving temporary imprints of the activity of the day. Before long the plows and the feet and the salt and the shoveling distanced the clarity of the pure white snowflakes. Time made it's impression and was gone.

I think about markings in the snow.
As our days come and go we press into one another and leave our imprints.
We move through our lives and leave an impression on another soul. We extend an encouragement or we rush by. We help someone who has fallen or we make a mistake and trip ourselves. We stir another's spirit toward God or we widen a slowly healing wound. We leave our marks everywhere.
The snow's record is accurate, but temporary.
What is the eternal imprint we are leaving? We leave traces of ourselves in each other's minds and hearts. We jump into activity and splash through the melting snow. After we rush by, what is left? Ruth Senter says it this way,
"It is not so much the splash you make when you're around ... as the ripples that continue after you're gone." - Ruth Senter
Ripples and traces... impressions...we touch another life every day. Tread softly. Walk along with purpose, with eagerness, with compassion, and with joy. And when the slush gets messy and filled with the dirt of the world, remember, just as God's grace covers us when we surrender each new day... and an unexpected pile of snow may just surprise you.
"As the rain and the snow comes down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, ...so it is my Word that goes out from my mouth - it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:10-11
Walking this journey with you, and occasionally stumbling along myself... with much prayer and love,
Louann Rodgers

Michelle Rickett working to touch the lives of abused and exploited around the world
Sisters in Service is a ministry that works to restore and rebuild the lives of abused and exploited women and young girls caught in trafficking in some of the most remote places in the world.
We have partnered with Sisters in Service to fund projects that are tangible ways to touch the lives of such women, many who face desperate conditions every day. Last spring, we worked together with the Spring Bling event to trade our earthly jewelry for eternal treasures, raising money to support SIS in direct efforts for young girls caught in trafficking.
This February11th, in partnership with some of our youth, a benefit concert will be held with all proceeds going to Sisters in Service.
Michelle Rickett, founder of Sisters in Service will share with us all that God is doing in partnership with many organizations around the world to work toward true freedom for the lives of women. Come and be inspired and challenged.

w i n t e r w o r r i e s
There is nothing-no circumstance, no trouble, no testing-that can ever touch me until, first of all, it has gone past God and past Christ, right through to me. If it has come that far, it has come with a great purpose, which I may not understand at the moment. But as I refuse to become panicky, as I lift up my eyes to Him and accept it as coming from the throne of God for some great purpose of blessing to my own heart, no sorrow will ever disturb me, no trial will ever disarm me, no circumstance will cause me to fret, for I shall rest in the joy of what my Lord is.

Winter has surprised us...
Snow has covered us...
School closings overwhelmed us!
Here are some fun facts
and trivia to enjoy...
Which of the following is not effected by wind chill? a. person b. dog c. car radiator d. bird
Answer: c. Wind chill is the combination of wind and temperature and is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin such as that of a person or animal. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at an accelerated rate, driving the body temperature down. Wind chill has no effect on cars or other objects.
What is the difference between sleet, hail, and freezing rain?
Answer: Hail is a chunk or stone of ice dropped from a thunderstorm. Sleet is frozen rain. Freezing rain is liquid rain that freezes to a surface such as the road or a tree.
True or False. It must be 32°F or colder for it to snow.
Answer: False. It has been known to snow with temperatures in the mid 40's. Temperatures are below 32°F up in the clouds where the snow is forming.
On the average, one inch of rain is equivalent to how many inches of snow?
a. 10 inches b. 1 inch c. 5 inches d. a foot
Answer: a. 10 inches of snow melts down to about an inch of liquid rain.
Which of the following impacts can you expect from a "Great Nor'easter"?
a. Heavy snow b. High winds c. Coastal Flooding
d. Blizzard e. All of the above f. None of the above
Answer: e. Nor'easters cause high winds and flooding along the coast and heavy snow and sometimes blizzard conditions inland over the Greater Metropolitan Washington area. Nor'easters are responsible for the areas's most hazardous winter weather.
Can it snow from clear skies?
Answer: Yes. Ice crystals can fall from clear skies when temperatures are in the single digits or colder.
What is more hazardous to trees and power lines?
a. One inch of wet snow b. One inch of ice
Answer: b. An inch of ice is heavier than wet snow and is hazardous enough to cause power lines and trees to come down.
Winter Facts
Fact: El Nino refers to a warming of the Pacific Equatorial waters and a slackening of the Trade Winds over those waters. But where does the name come from? It originates from Peru. Two big industries in Peru were fishing and fertilizer. Fishermen noticed that once every several years, the waters would warm; the upwelling of cold water that brought nutrients to the fish would stop; the fish that fed on the nutrients would leave; and the birds that fed on the fish would leave. The bird guano was a major source of fertilizer. It had a great impact on the local economy. They named it "El Nino" after the child, Jesus Christ, giving it a religious connotation because it seemed to occur around Christmas time.
Fact: La Nina refers to a cooling of the Pacific Equatorial waters and an increase in the Trade Winds over those waters. It is not uncommon for La Nina to follow a strong El Nino, although this does not always happen... this winter is an example!
Fact: About 70 percent of winter storm related deaths occur in automobiles.
The rest are primarily due to heart attacks from over exertions such as shoveling heavy snow or from hypothermia caused by over exposure to the cold. When winter storms strike, stay indoors and keep warm and dry. Avoid over-exertion. Your heart is already working hard in the cold to keep your body warm.
Fact: The Winter of 1779-1780 was so cold that ice was piled 20 feet high along the Delmarva Coast and stayed there until spring.
The upper portion of the Chesapeake Bay and the entire Potomac River was frozen solid. People were able to walk from Annapolis to Kent Island and from Alexandria into DC.
hmmm.... relatively speaking, I guess we are having a mild winter...

Winter
De-Stress Check
List
|
- Develop Order. Take advantage of winter days you are stuck indoors. Tidy up. Put things away. Toss clutter. You can restore a sense of calm to a room with a thirty minute 'sort and dump'
- Divert Your Focus. It is impossible to be consumed by worry when something else is captivating your interest. Try a new hobby or make a new recipe... get moving on something new!
- Diffuse. Push the pressures out of your body through twenty minutes of aerobic exercise.
- Debrief. Talk out your tension with a safe and trusted friend.
- Diversify. Change the channels in your brain. Problem solving is more effective when the mind frequently rests from a problem rather than obsessing on it continuously.
- Deliberately Rest. Schedule several 5 minute slots during the day to 'slow down'. Pray and meditate Scripture to soothe the soul.
- Deal with Unfinished Business. Make amends when ever possible. Grant forgiveness rather than nursing grudges. Spend time on a handwritten note to encourage someone you've lost touch with.
- Choose to Trust. One of the best prescriptions for fear is to say, 'God, I choose to trust You.'
- Dedicate Yourself to the Basics. To see clearly in the midst of stress...sleep 8 - 9 hours a night, eat balanced meals, exercise 20-30 minutes three times a week.
- Disengage. When overwhelmed, step back, take a breath, buy yourself some time -- not everything has to be 'fixed' today.
- Dig In. Avoidance heightens anxiety. Evaluate what can be done and do it. Don't get stuck in the quicksand of 'all or nothing'. Persevere and chose the next best thing -- dig deep and do it.
- Don't be a Type "E" Person. No one was designed to be everything to everyone. Only God can fill that role!
