I was surprised by an unexpected snowfall today. The beautiful blanket quieted our world and for a few moments, everything was pristine. Untouched, and sparkling. But just as quickly as it came, the white snow was immediately disturbed, leaving temporary imprints of the activity of the day. Before long the plows and the feet and the salt and the shoveling distanced the clarity of the pure white snowflakes. Time made it's impression and was gone.
So I pondered footprints and thought about markings in the snow.
As our days come and go we press into one another and leave our imprints. We move through our lives and leave an impression on another soul. We extend an encouragement or we rush by. We help someone who has fallen or we make a mistake and trip ourselves. We stir another's spirit toward God or we widen a slowly healing wound. We leave our marks everywhere.
The snow's record is accurate, but temporary. What is the eternal imprint we are leaving? We leave traces of ourselves in each other's minds and hearts. Tread softly. Walk along with purpose, with eagerness, with compassion, and with joy.
Traces, prints, impressions...may our touch in other's lives reflect well on
our precious Jesus. And when the slush gets messy and filled with the dirt of the world, remember, just as God's grace covers us when we surrender each new day... an unexpected snowfall may just surprise you. "As the rain and the snow comes down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, ...so it is my Word that goes out from my mouth - it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:10-11 Walking this journey with you, and occasionally stumbling along myself... with much prayer and love,

wisdom in winter
Something special happened this past week, on an ordinary night in winter that was cold with the beginnings of a bright January moon.
Like the beauty of God's creation and the mooonlit sky on a crisp winter's night, we saw the iridescence of inspiration. We saw the reflection of God's face in those of the women who shared with us.
You may have joined us Wednesday night when we gathered for an evening
of sharing from several of our women... sharing wisdom from so many
places. Wisdom for Marriage was an honest, sincere, moving, and inspiring discussion of what God has done (and can do) through difficult seasons of marriage.
The world tells us one thing, but God's Word tells us another. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him..." (Romans 8:28). In their honest, open sharing, we were reminded of this important truth.
We all want to remain the young, beautiful bride of our wedding day. But sometimes the seasons of marriage and circumstances of life are really difficult. Beauty ages, illness comes, brokenness shatters us, grief burdens us, temptations bring struggle, and family, parenting, jobs and career challenge us, discouragement piles up ... LIFE enters in.
We want to be wise, beautiful, godly wives.
"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is
fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised" (Proverbs
31:30). The woman who "fears the LORD" knows a beauty far more
lasting than mere physical charm, a powerful beauty that emanates from a humble
heart, from a spirit bowed in reverence before Almighty God.
The women who shared with us on Wednesday night were beautiful. Beautiful and iridescent. Websters' dictionary uses the word 'pearlescent' to describe iridescent. I can hardly spell these words let alone give an accurate definition. But I know what we saw and heard from the testimony of these women was inspiring... it was pearlescent!
We saw the reflection of God's love, His power, and His grace in the testimony of these women and the iridescent glow of joy that reflects His Spirit.
On such a chilly night in January, we were warm. Warm and grateful. Thank you Claudia, Susan, Elaine, Joan and LInda.

cold fingers
I'm a winter wimp. In the
days between Christmas and the first daffodil I whine and
throw tiny tantrums because of the cold, the icy grey days of winter. I love a good, deep snow, but not the cold. I am truly a winter wimp. Winter always comes, and with it comes my desperate attempt to keep warm. Scarves... I love my scarves. Colorful, warm, snuggly, they keep the draft away. And mittens! I learned long ago that mittens are
warmer than gloves. Gloves separate my fingers, but mittens keep my fingers
together, each one sharing
the warmth of the other.
Spiritual winters come, too. Those
days when the climate turns our hearts dark and cold and slippery with ice,
threatening to knock our feet out from under us and land us on our tailbones,
wondering how we got there. Or if we'll ever get up again. In those days it's
natural to want to turn away from fellowship with others, to cocoon in gloves
made of worry or grief or anger or fear, our hearts getting colder tucked away
in the dark.
We think that wrapping ourselves up
all by ourselves will keep us warmer, but the opposite is true. Because we were not meant to do life our own. My fingers warmly wiggling in
mittens remind me of the
importance of living this life in community with others. Faithful
and faith-filled ones who
share the warmth of the Son when winter chills my soul to the bone. When I'm
slogging around in spiritual slush I'm reminded that God has given me the right equipment to
weather the storm. He has pointed me to others who have stared
down their own personal winters.
Are you slogging through? Your body
bent against horizontal winds? Lean
into the fellowship of others who have weathered the storm. A
Bible study, a small group, a prayer partner. Connect in friendship with those who've made it safely through to the other side of
winter. Bow your head and close your eyes.
Listen to prayers whispered from
hearts made stronger because of the howling winds. Breathe deeply as ancient
and sacred words are shared...the Word that gives life and hope and peace. Take
courage in their witness to the truth of spring, and the promise that He makes
all things new.
All things. New. |

if i really believed... ...that eternity waited for me on the other side of this brief life,
If I really believed...
I
would fear less and risk
more...
I would live my life more like a pilgrim and
less like a packrat...
I would be more concerned
with being a friend than being without friends...
I
would be more comfortable with weakness and less
trusting of control...
I would pray more and
process
less...
I would be more concerned with souls and
less impatient with personalities...
I would expend
more energy worshiping and less worrying...
The
world would see God more, and I would see me
less... if I really
believed.

Spirit to Spirit
Created to hear His voice ...the light of His Glory
encouragement by Linda Slavin
"I will hear what
God the LORD will speak,For He will speak peace
To His people and to His
saints;
But let them not turn
back to folly." Psalm 85:8
It is hard to find
someone in the bible that God has not spoken to... God is real and God is still speaking, just
as he announced His Son Jesus, he announces his plans and purposes for our lives.
He wants to speak his vision and His purpose in our individual lives so we can walk
that perfect plan. A part of learning God's voice is connecting to His heart in prayer, reading His Word, and time alone with Him. God wants to bring His vision into the lives of those who have yet to see
the"Light of His Glory". May we
continue on the path we begun with Him without turning back , realizing his
footsteps are our pathway. "Righteousness will go
before Him, and shall make His
footsteps our pathway." -Psalm 85:13

De-Stress Check List
|
- Develop Order. Tidy up. Put things away. Toss clutter. You can restore a sense of calm to a room with a thirty minute 'sort and dump'
- Divert Your Focus. It is impossible to be consumed by worry when something else is captivating your interest.
-
Diffuse. Push the pressures out of your body through twenty minutes of aerobic exercise.
- Debrief. Talk out your tension with a safe and trusted friend.
-
Diversify. Change the channels in your brain. Problem solving is more effective when the mind frequently rests from a problem rather than obsessing on it continuously.
-
Deliberately Rest. Schedule several 5 minute slots during the day to 'slow down'. Pray and meditate Scripture to soothe the soul.
-
Deal with Unfinished Business. Make amends when ever possible. Grant forgiveness rather than nursing grudges.
-
Choose to Trust. One of the best prescriptions for fear is to say, 'God, I choose to trust You.'
-
Dedicate Yourself to the Basics. To see clearly in the midst of stress...sleep 8 - 9 hours a night, eat balanced meals, exercise 20-30 minutes three times a week.
-
Disengage. When overwhelmed, step back, take a breath, buy yourself some time -- not everything has to be 'fixed' today.
-
Dig In. Avoidance heightens anxiety. Evaluate what can be done and do it. Don't get stuck in the quicksand of 'all or nothing'. Persevere.
- Don't be a Type "E" Person. No one was designed to be everything to everyone. Only God can fill that role!
