Garden Post Summer 08
gone to the beach
...just don't be away too long...

Summer brings travel, new schedules and a somewhat crazy 'routine'.  Wherever you might be these last lingering hot days of August, don't be away too long.

Find a few moments each day to rest, pray, and seek God.  Find a quiet hammock or chair on the deck to steal some sunshine and reflect on the blessings God has given you.
Take five minutes to speak PRAISES to God.
5 Minutes!
Can you do it?
It will change your day.
Enjoy every last beach day!

Happy Summer! It's hard to believe it's August. I'm missing you, and wanted to share some things God has been teaching me.

Our spring study lingered on my mind. The teaching on God's Measureless Love reminded me that God's grace is enough - for everyday little things and the big things I struggle with.

Planning and preparing along the summer weeks I've been thinking about listening.  If you know me well, you know this is not my first response!  I'm a do-er, a list maker and a get up early and be disciplined gal, but this summer I was drawn to God in a new way, to listen, to rest, reflect, and listen.

So I've been thinking about listening.  And God tells me He wants my heart -- all of my heart.  I want to obey, do it right, take action.  Giving God my heart is putting faith in His Word.  God Himself doesn't tell us exactly how to show our patience, self-control, and love for Him in the specific moments of our lives.  God shows us how much He loves us, gives us His Word, and then asks us to respond to His heart from our own.

"Your Word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path."  Psalm 119:105

Where have you traveled this summer? Have you explored new places?  Enjoyed on a long bike ride, or some early morning walks?
August brings those last, leisurely, long days of summer when we still feel the heat... but there are touches of autumn approaching.

Consider exploring new paths of spiritual growth in the new season ahead and be sure to plan to join us for Women's Bible Study ... we begin in September, and are excited about all that God has for us.

You can join us when convenient for your schedule -- we have three choices of study each week:

Tuesday evenings, 7-9pm [during Jr. High Youth Group]
Wednesday mornings, 9:15-11:15am [WOW Kids (preschool 3-6yr)]
Thursday mornings, 9:15-11:15am [Kids Club (infants-6yr)]

You can choose from several choices of Bible Study AND this year you can choose your type of small group! Download [PDF] an information flyer with all the details.  [Click here to REGISTER ONLINE.]

As I've been thinking about Bible Study, I'm most excited about our small groups. Small groups provide community and a place for deeper understanding. Doing study together brings shared insight and wisdom for the challenges we face in everyday living. Our world is filled with complex issues. We live in a fast paced culture. Building relationships in small groups help us sift the confusion of this world through the truth of God's Word. Small groups remind us that we don't travel this journey alone.

This year you can choose from three types of small groups:
... a regular study group, a group that is looping with last year's group... or you can choose a group called soul purpose -- a group where each member helps share leadership in a smaller, accountability focused group. Every group has the treasures of the blessings of friendship, encouragment and connection. [Click here for more details on our small groups].

As I've been thinking about Bible Study, I'm thankful for the gift of God's Word. We study God's Word for truth and purpose. We study God's Word so we can develop a personal relationship with a God who cares about the big and small details, and the joyful and difficult circumstances of our lives. We study God's Word for accountability and growth. Join us as we study God's Word so we can "...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." [2 Peter 3:18].

Biblical principles for living
wisely
 in uncertain times.

excerpt from Steve Scalici, CFP
[crosswalk.com]

Spend less that you earn
In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has. Proverbs 21:20 (NIV)
This is the foundation of every financial plan. You can have wonderful saving and investing plans, but if you don't have extra money, they won't do you any good.

Avoid the use of debt
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.  Proverbs 22:7 (NIV)
Allowing debt to build up is simply unwise. When times are good, save so when hard times come you are not buried in debt.

Save money for provisional purpose

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!  It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.  Proverbs 6:6-8 (NIV).
The economy continually goes through cycles. Be wise and always factor savings into your budget.

Set long-term goals

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.  Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
It's been said before that if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there. When we fail to set financial goals, the road to financial freedom is made more difficult.  It's important to remember, that when you do set your goals, God must be at the center.

Believe that God owns it all

The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.  Psalm 24:1 (NIV).

If we remember that God owns it all and not us, we are free from the fear that we will somehow lose it.  We have to ask ourselves, "how would we act if we were completely confident that God was with us?" The reality is none of us have control over the economy.  However, we do have control over how we respond.  We can respond in fear or in faith. Regardless of what happens in our economy, I've done everything I can do to prepare for uncertainty; and I am confident that God will provide for my needs.

Spirit to Spirit... God in the midst of life
encouragement by Linda Slavin

Why do I wrestle within?
How can I release all that I've stuffed inside?

So many times I try to hide what's inside... guilt, shame, pain, emptiness, busyness, distractions, obsessions, so many different emotions. I remember telling the Lord,  I conquer one and it seems another one comes. Sometimes I think it's resolved and it starts again, like waves in the ocean beating against me not allowing me to catch my breath or steady my feet.

What do I do?
How do I get rid of all this that is inside of me?

Then I would hear... How can you release what's inside you when you think keeping it in is key, when letting go is the answer? The answer is to allow healing by releasing it to God. When we give it to Him we create space that allows the flow of living water.

praying womanJesus says, My strength and power abides within you. This life was given to you from Me, from My throne to your heart.  Allow My Spirit to do the work of healing, forgiveness, and restoration. When we allow God's Spirit to flow into the inner recesses of our hearts we find the fulfillment of His purpose flowing through us.

Prayer today: Lord, fill me with your Spirit, with your presence, your power, and your purpose. I give you my struggle for control. Thank you for your unlimited love and grace.

Titus 3:5 "...not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit."
