SNO CONES and Flip Flops...

...images of summertime, sunshine and everyday word pictures
sno cones

I'm a summergirl.
I love the early morning angle of the sun, quiet moments before the house is awake. I love having the girls close by and us all wearing flip flops. I love the smell of sunscreen and seeing the ocean early in the morning... when we can make the first marks in the clean sand.

Summertime has memories of simple days and ordinary things like sno cones...juices of sweetness spread over cold icyness that glimmers in the summer heat. Word pictures of heat and cool refreshment. Bright colors and pastel sunsets. What are the word pictures of my spiritual summer? Bright colors of insight and green stems of growth? Or cracked shoots dried out by the hot sun and tangled masses of weeds?

Summer makes me want to be more child-like. Remember lying on the grass and starring at the white clouds, making pictures in the sky? Can I search heavenward and see the hand of The Creator in the circumstances of my life? Can I feel His presence in the cool breezes of my season? Where do I see God in the everyday? Can I find refreshment in the dry and barren moments?

These are some summer questions for me. Isaiah shares the heart of refreshment that we truly long for, "...For in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water." (Isaiah 35:6-7).

SNO Cones are terrific. But this is the very best word picture.

Summer Stroll through the Psalms...

...reflecting on their panoramic portrayal of our Sovereign Lord [Pat Musgrove]
psalms

Summer brings opportunities to be outdoors enjoying God's great creation. The psalmists possibly spent a great deal of time in the open air, which explains why they often reflected on God's majesty in nature. The Psalms give us a panoramic view, reflecting on their portrayal of the Sovereign Lord.

The psalmist looks at the entire creation and exclaims: "The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

He goes on to validate this view by affirming God as Creator: "...for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters" (Psalm 24:1,2, NIV).

This theme of God as Creator recurs repeatedly through the psalms, but it is not original with the psalmists. Moses declared it to Pharoah (Exodus 9:29). God himself asserted His authority over the earth to both Moses and Job (Exodus 19:5, Job 41:11). The Apostle Paul repeated this claim (1 Corinthians 10:26).

Accepting the position that the earth is the Lord's is what I call taking the panoramic view. When we start with this basic principle, we can see purpose for the present and hope for the future. The Creator God of the past is the God who cares for the present and controls the future.

- Matthew 18:20

Friends, be sure to register early for Women's Bible Study. I'd love to help you get connected. August will bring sticky days of heat -- don't forget to draw from the well of refreshment that Isaiah spoke of, "...and the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water." (Isaiah 35:6-7)

Want to chat? Have a question? Ideas or suggestion? Call or email me at any time.
Perhaps I'll see you in line for a sno cone!

Reflections and Encouragement for Raising Godly Children...

  • Make a commitment to Interest-- Philippians 2:4: "Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others." Communicate your interest through your presence and your passion.
  • Make a commitment to Servanthood--John 12:26: "My Father will honor anyone who serves me." Teach them to be servants to a hurting world, God will honor them.
  • Make a commitment to a Peaceful Home-- Proverbs 14:26: "Those who respect the Lord will have security, and their children will be protected." Focus on the Lord and on prayer. Show your respect by reading His Word, and obeying it.
  • Make a commitment to Fun--Proverbs 17:22: "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones." Slow down, lighten up, and schedule fun time.
  • Make a commitment to Encouragement-- Proverbs 12:18: "Careless words stab like a sword, but wise words bring healing." Be personal and inspirational with your conversation.
  • Make a commitment to Discipline-- Proverbs 3:11- 12: "My child don't ignore it when the Lord disciplines you, and don't be discouraged when He corrects you. For the Lord corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights." Just do it, and do it deliberately. Be firm, yet loving in your discipline.
  • Make a commitment to Personal Development-- 2 Corinthians 13:5: "Look closely at yourselves. Test yourselves to see if you are living in the faith. You know that Jesus Christ is in you--unless you fail the test." You can teach what you know, but you will reproduce what you are.
  • Make a commitment to Spiritual Challenges-- Proverbs 22:6: "Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it." Look for teachable moments and build their relationships with significant others. Pray together as a family.

Remembering Lessons from LOVING WELL...

We were blessed in late spring as we studied I John Chapter 4 for wisdom on loving well in every relationship in our lives.

Reflect on the Four Confessions of Love:

  • God is Perfect Love [1 John 4:18]
  • Nothing can separate me from God's perfect love [Romans 8:38-39]
  • God pours His perfect love into my imperfect heart [Romans 5:5]
  • Accessed, I can love anyone through anything [Philippians 4:13]

Keep dipping in the 'Loving WELL". God is our source of strength to dip into to receive the power of the Holy Spirit to do what we cannot.
