Motivational Quote

Fit Tip of the Month

Stretching and flexibility are very important aspects of good physical fitness, so don't overlook them. Ideally, you should stretch before each workout (both cardio and resistance training) and after each workout. If you can't do both, then make the after-stretching a priority.

October 2010

Greetings!

October is walk to school month! Do your kids walk to school? If they do, they're among just a fraction of children who hit the pavement each morning, Monday through Friday.

As we're well into the new school year and I have to admit, I'm feeling a little frustrated. I often wonder what percentage of parents drive their children to or from school when walking is so much simpler and greener. Read more

Start The New Year Slimmer!

The holiday season is undoubtedly a time for rejoicing. Unfortunately, the average adult does a little too much celebrating during this time of year, which leads to extra baggage when the New Year rings in.

Festivities that include indulging in extra helpings, snacking on seasonal treats, and little to no workout time all contribute to the increase in dieters in January. So, this holiday season buck the trends and avoid the Seasonal Seven (the average weight most of us will gain between Thanksgiving and the New Year). That's one trend you don't want to participate in!  Read more

Pumpkins Are Good for You

Pumpkins 2Carving Out Good Health

On farm stands across the country, the reds, yellows and greens of summer are turning to the oranges of fall. Yes, the Great Pumpkin has arrived!

Festive and flavorful, a single serving of the delectable orange squash is chock full of vitamin A and potassium and best of all, fat free. A staple in the diets of Native Americans long before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, pumpkins have come to signify the arrival of the fall harvest and the advent of the Halloween season.

Why Can't I Lose Weight?

Eating Like That Could Make You Fat

It's the big stuff that we tend to conveniently overlook.

  • It's finishing the kid's leftovers (even though you just ate)
  • It's snacking on crackers while hovering over the sink
  • It's downing the granola bar while standing in front of the pantry
  • It's the extra spoonfuls of "light" ice cream when perched in front of the freezer
  • It's the candy at work
  • It's the coffee shop fare

This is all the non-meal plan stuff we block out. Then another month goes by and we don't make any progress towards our goals.
