This Month's Speaker:
Rob Fowler - WCBD-TV2

Hurricane Season in the Lowcountry

Rob FowlerOne of our favorite meetings every year is September, when we invite one of our local meteorologists to come speak with us about hurricane season.  Always very informative, always very entertaining.  This month, we have Rob Fowler from Channel 2 joining us, so don't miss this Thursday's meeting!

Rob Fowler has been Storm Team 2's Chief Meteorologist since September 1987. Before arriving in Charleston, Rob worked at TV Stations in Savannah, Georgia, and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Rob is a member of both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society and has been awarded the Seals of Approval from both weather organizations.

Rob earned a communications degree from Georgia Southern University and his Broadcast Meteorology Certification from Mississippi State University. He has also studied weather and Oceanography at Portland State University in Oregon.

Following coverage of Hurricane Hugo, Rob was named "Meteorologist of the Year" by the National Weather Association.

Rob has also been recognized as the state of South Carolina Weather Broadcaster of the Year in 1997, and won the Best Meteorologist in the Carolinas in 2000 from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.

Rob was also recognized by Governor Mark Sanford in 2006 with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award than can be bestowed upon a citizen of South Carolina.

Married with three kids, Rob is active in the community, volunteering for many organizations. He also visits with thousands of Lowcountry school children every year, and host school tours of News 2's state of the art broadcast facility.

Rob's forecast can also be heard every day on several Lowcountry radio stations, including 103.5 WEZL, News Radio 94.3FM, Q104.5, and Y102.5

This Month's Social:
Mount Pleasant Farmers Market

This Tuesday, September 14, 3:30 p.m. until...

MP Town LogoAs part of our involvement with the Town of Mount Pleasant and their efforts to promote and appreciate business within our town, we have been invited to set up a table at this Tuesday's Farmers Market, located at Moultrie Middle School on Coleman Boulevard.

The board members of the MPBA will be manning the table to greet market attendees and share information about our association.  But we'd also like to use this opportunity for association members and guests to come by and just socialize outside of our normal meeting.

The Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is the perfect place to buy fresh, locally grown produce while enjoying the afternoon with friends and family. This event has become a gathering place for locals and Tuesday, we hope it will be a gathering place for local business professionals as well.

Come join us for a little social time while exploring the treasure trove of fruits, vegetables, flowers, preserves, dips, breads, pies, and numerous other delectable treats.

No reservations, no speeches, no cost to attend.  Just come enjoy the bounty available at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market and be sure to stop by the MPBA table and spend a little time with fellow business professionals.

 President's Corner - September 2010

  by MPBA President Chuck Diggle

Chuck Diggle

Lots going on this month.

This Thursday's meeting will feature not only our annual "hurricane" talk - with Rob Fowler as our speaker - but we will also hear from Quin Stinchfield of the Town of Mount Pleasant about the Town's First Annual Business Appreciation Week!

Tuesday: As part of this recognition of local businesses, the Town has given us a table at Tuesday's Farmer's Market (see above) where we hope you'll join us just to visit and chat while enjoying all that the Farmer's Market has to offer.  It's a great place to spend a Tuesday afternoon and we look forward to seeing you there.

Wednesday: In addition, the Town is holding a Breakfast with the Mayor this Wednesday from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Cooper River Room at the Waterfront Park. Food and drinks will be served.  Participate in an open discussion with Mayor Billy Swails and help the Town strategize on how to keep Mount Pleasant attractive to new and existing businesses.   Any local business person is welcome to attend, but a firm RSVP is required in order for you to be on the attendee list.  If you'd like to attend breakfast with the Mayor this Wednesday morning, please email Quin Stinchfield at mpbiz@townofmountpleasant.com or call her at 377-5365 by no later than 4 p.m. today!

Thursday: Back to Thursday's MPBA meeting.  We will also hear briefly from a representative of the Charleston Metro Chamber, who wishes to give local business professionals some information about the sales tax referendum coming up in November.

So this is a busy week with lots of good opportunities for local business people.

AND DON'T MISS THIS....

Social Cruise:  Finally, a quick note about our MPBA social coming next month.  On October 7th, from 6-8 p.m., we are taking a cruise on the Osprey to enjoy a little time on the water.  As with all socials, no speeches or agendas, just time for business professionals to socialize.  The cost is just $20 per person and includes food, beer and wine. The Osprey will board here in Mount Pleasant at 5:30 and we'll depart at 6 p.m. sharp for a cruise around the harbor.  We will return to the dock at 8 p.m.

This is a members-only social.  And more importantly, it is a limited seating cruise.  Only 49 seats are available and 15 have already been taken.  The remaining 34 tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at this Thursday's meeting.  You cannot RSVP or purchase by email or phone. You can only purchase tickets at the check-in table this Thursday.  Yet another great reason to attend  Thursday's meeting and a good reason to show up early!

I look forward to seeing you there!  Be sure and RSVP today!

This month's sponsor:

Diggle Publishing

As Diggle Publishing Company, the Diggle family has published the local military newspapers in the Charleston area since 2002.  Previous to that, the Diggles published the Moultrie News as well as a number of other community newspapers in the Charleston area and when they owned that company, they had been publishing the local military papers since the mid-1970's.  So it's a market they know a lot about.

Reaching the local active and reserve military audience

Publisher Chuck Diggle is proud to announce the official merger of the base newspapers for the Air Force Base and the Naval Weapons Station.  As part of joint-basing (in which command and control of both bases is placed under a single authority) the existing base newspapers (the Airlift Dispatch and the Navy Shoreline) will combine into a single weekly publication called The Patriot.

October 1st, Diggle Publishing will cease publication of the Airlift and Shoreline and will start publication of The Patriot, which will be the official base newspaper for both the Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station Charleston.  It is a tabloid newspaper that comes out every Friday with 12,500 copies which will be delivered to all on-base housing as well as to nearly 100 rack and drop locations on both bases.  The content of the paper is all official Air Force and Navy news as well as weekly communication to base personnel from the joint base commander, Col. Martha Meeker.

The Patriot is the only way to specifically target local military personnel with an advertisement for your business.  It reaches a demographic with an annual payroll of more than $331 million.  With more than 22,000 active duty, reserve personnel, civilians and
contractors employed by Joint Base Charleston, The Patriot is an important connection to this exclusive and dynamic market which contributes more than $3.5 Billion to the Charleston area economy.

Reaching the local retired military audience

In addition to The Patriot, Diggle Publishing also publishes a monthly newspaper targeting local military retirees and veterans.  Distributed on base bases at places frequented by retirees (commissaries and base exchanges), the Lowcountry Military Retiree News has grown to a monthly circulation of 10,000. It is also distributed at the VA Hospital, the Naval Clinic, VFW's and American Legions and Patriots Point. Several months ago, at the request of base officials there, "The Retiree News" started distribution at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort as well as at Parris Island.

With over 16,000 military retirees in the Charleston area alone (with an approximately $450 million military pension payroll) this impactful market segment is one your company cannot afford to ignore.

For more information on advertising to the local military or military retirees, email Chuck@CharlestonMilitary.com or call 972-2356. Or visit our website (soon to be updated with information for The Patriot) at www.CharlestonMilitary.com

New/Returning Member Profiles

Are you interested in talking about what you do for a living to a group of 100 or so highly-motivated, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking business professionals? Are you blessed with the oratorical skills to state your case in a reasonably succinct manner, bravely fighting the urge to ramble or otherwise cloud your meaningful message? Can you explain everything anyone would ever want to know about you and your business in a minute-and-a-half? Are you a member of the Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association?

If your answer to even one of these questions, including the last one, is yes, you are a prime candidate to make your "new member" or "returning member" presentation at an MPBPA meeting this year. You'll have 90 seconds to network with every influential business professional in the room.

We're booked through our March meeting, and a few slots already have been filled for the rest of the year. Please call, write or confront me at the next MPBPA meeting if you are interested in taking advantage of this great opportunity to market your business.
