JK Harris
Be sure to make plans to attend this Thursday's Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association meeting, as it is sure to be a good one!JK (John) Harris, founder and president of JK Harris & Company, has written a book aimed at entrepreneurs and business managers, Flashpoint: Seven Core Strategies for Rapid Fire Business Growth (Entrepreneur Press, April, 2010).

Harris, a self-described serial entrepreneur will discuss the seven strategies essential for business growth, regardless of the company or industry. He illustrates his points with real life examples-some humorous and some painful-from his own business experiences. The strategies are interrelated and work together to help any entrepreneur build an unstoppable company.

Crediting much of his success to lessons learned from other entrepreneurs as well as his own experience, Harris has made it his mission to share his knowledge and expertise with business owners and managers across the country through his books and speeches.

Having started and run 18 companies in a variety of industries and during every type of economic cycle, his speech (and his book) will provide valuable and immediately useful information for readers looking to start or grow their business in the current economic environment.

 President's Corner - June 2010
"It's all about perspective...

Chuck Diggle

First, I'd like to thank those who turned out last Tuesday for our members only happy hour at the 17 NORTH restaurant.

The outdoor dining area was a great place to wrap up an afternoon of work with friends and colleagues from the Association. It was also election day, so it was a good chance to chat about local politics as well.

All who attended had a great time.  We'll plan another happy hour in the near future.

And many thanks to 17 NORTH for some outstanding food.  They put out more than we could eat and covered that cost themselves.  If you get a chance to spin by for a meal or a drink sometime, be sure to thank them for their support of the Association.

What's In A Name?

Speaking of the Association, I'd like to announce one small change that many of you may or may not notice (when implemented) if not specifically told about it.

As many of you know, this group was started in 1992 by a group of business owners and was initially called the East Cooper Merchants Association.  Back in those days, we met in the dining room at Snee Farm country club and a meeting turnout of 20 people was considered a success!  We've come a long way!

After several years, it was decided that the name was too retail-oriented and that local professionals who did not necessarily have a storefront (doctors, dentists, accountants, salespeople) would feel left out.  So the name of the group was changed to the Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association

We often say MPBPA for short - although it can be a tongue-twister for those not accustomed to saying this.  Heck, after all these years, some of us on the board still stumble over it from time to time.

So it was sort of a random conversation that took place during a recent meeting of the executive board about how cumbersome the name was.  I'm not sure how it even started.  But after some discussion, we realized that many people we know subconsciously shorten it to the "Mount Pleasant Business Association" when talking about the group.  I find that I do it from time to time because the whole name of our group sometimes falls off the tongue like a bucket of mud.  It's just too long a name...

All of the sudden (duh), it dawned on us that the shorter moniker many of us already use really says everything that the group is.  Why years ago we felt the need to specifically include the word "professional" in the name - I'm not sure we could say.  A "business association" includes everyone in business - merchants and professionals alike.

So after some lengthy discussion about it, we voted unanimously to shorten the name of our group to the far-more easily "say-able"
Mount Pleasant Business Association.

Yes, we will be changing the logos to match this shorter name.  Yes, the acronym will become MPBA.  Yes, we'll be updating our charter with the state to make it official.

It's really a small change, but one that made sense with some things we are recently working on to redefine our organization, including our new relationship with the Town both in terms of information sharing and economic development partnering, as well as our upcoming website redesign and our newer focus on educational business topics for our luncheon programs.

The name change will be officially implemented over the next month or so - most likely done in conjunction with the launch of our new website.  We'll keep you up to date!

New/Returning Member Profiles

Are you interested in talking about what you do for a living to a group of 100 or so highly-motivated, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking business professionals? Are you blessed with the oratorical skills to state your case in a reasonably succinct manner, bravely fighting the urge to ramble or otherwise cloud your meaningful message? Can you explain everything anyone would ever want to know about you and your business in a minute-and-a-half? Are you a member of the Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association?

If your answer to even one of these questions, including the last one, is yes, you are a prime candidate to make your "new member" or "returning member" presentation at an MPBPA meeting this year. You'll have 90 seconds to network with every influential business professional in the room.

We're booked through our March meeting, and a few slots already have been filled for the rest of the year. Please call, write or confront me at the next MPBPA meeting if you are interested in taking advantage of this great opportunity to market your business.
