This month's speaker: Dr. Nancy McGinley ChasCo School District Superintendent
 Be sure to
make plans to attend this
Thursday's Mount Pleasant Business and
Professional Association meeting, one of our
most important of the year!
The MPBPA will
hold it's annual scholarship
presentation as we award local students
with scholarships in memory of Joe Brinson.
A committee of members chaired by MPBPA Vice-President Jason Biggs of Regions Bank have chosen several local college-bound students
to receive $4,000 in scholarship funds, supported
by MPBPA member fees. This is always one of
the best meetings of the year.
As for our
featured speaker, we keep it
focused on local education as we invite
Charleston County School Superintendent Nancy
McGinley to assist in the scholarship awards
and to speak with us about the school
district's continued plans for the East
Cooper area.
Dr. Nancy J.
McGinley came to Charleston as
Chief Academic Officer in 2004 to build on a
career of public service excellence that
includes service to urban and inner city
students and a strong record of achievement
as a school principal and academic
administrator. She has combined that passion
for urban education with her magnetic
leadership skills to push all schools to
educational excellence and make the community
proud.
As CAO, Dr.
McGinley was the person most
responsible for driving the work of the
Charleston Plan for Excellence and in May
2007 the School Board hired her to succeed
Dr. Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson. Her appointment
received strong support from the business
community, political leaders, and CCSD
employees who worked beside her for the past six years.
Her work in
Charleston has received national
attention for CCSD schools.

Paid meeting sponsor:

Ken Glasson has an unparalleled record of service to his community and his country.
He is a Mustang lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, in his 30th year of service. He has served worldwide, from north of the Arctic Circle to the jungles of Central America. As an active-duty Marine, he saw combat in the Persian Gulf War in 1991 as the point element for all Marine ground forces. He was activated again as part of supporting operations in Kosovo, and in 2006 for the Global War on Terror and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
He is a reconnaissance Marine, and his current MOS is as an intel officer, holding a top-secret clearance. He coordinated the Marine Corps Marathon in 1992, and ran and completed it in 1992 and 1994.
Ken was elected in 2006 to Mount Pleasant Town Council, where he chairs the Bids & Purchases and Fire Committees and serves on the Finance and Public Services Committees. During his tenure as a Councilman, he has faced arduous challenges, which he met with the same philosophy that has carried him through his Marine service: Do what's right because it is right, not because it is popular.
As a businessman, he scored impressive success in the insurance industry, and then founded and ran a successful financial-planning company in Mount Pleasant.
In Ken's off-hours, he helped to found the Lowcountry Leathernecks, a Marine organization, lead a Bible study and coached soccer and football through the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. He's worked for 11 years with Toys for Tots, a Marine charity, and has raised hundreds of thousands of toys as Christmas gifts for local children.
He is the proud parent of two children, holds a black belt in karate, and loves to hunt, fish and travel. He has been a Lowcountry resident since 1997 and considers it the best place in the world to live.
Decorated officer. Elected official. Entrepreneur. All these words describe Ken Glasson, but the best description may come from Ken himself: "People who know me, know I'm one of the most persistent people around. At the end of the day, I'm the one who'll kick the doors down until the job is finished."
Most recently, Ken has been featured on the front page of the Post and Courier as he aims to stamp out corruption in local politics.

President's Corner - May 2010 "It's all about perspective...
Short and sweet this month, folks.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came out for the Party on the Cotton Dock last month. We had a great time, enjoyed fantastic weather, had a good turnout and look forward to doing it again next Spring!
For pictures of the event - courtesy of our good friends at the Moultrie News and editor Sully Witte - click here
I'd also like to thank Tammy Faust of Square One Meeting Planning for putting the event together, as she's done for several years. And thanks also go to Treasurer Shawna Garris of Tidelands Bank and Secretary Diane Pauldine of Direct Marketers of Charleston for planning assistance and running the check-in table for the whole event. Also many thanks for the rest of the board for their help in putting on this event, including all those that showed up early to help set up and stayed late to help clean up. I truly appreciate all the hard work that goes into this event each year.
Also many thanks to our sponsors for the event:

New/Returning Member Profiles
Are you interested in talking about what you do for a living to a group of 100 or so highly-motivated, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking business professionals? Are you blessed with the oratorical skills to state your case in a reasonably succinct manner, bravely fighting the urge to ramble or otherwise cloud your meaningful message? Can you explain everything anyone would ever want to know about you and your business in a minute-and-a-half? Are you a member of the Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association?
If your answer to even one of these questions, including the last one, is yes, you are a prime candidate to make your "new member" or "returning member" presentation at an MPBPA meeting this year. You'll have 90 seconds to network with every influential business professional in the room.
We're booked through our March meeting, and a few slots already have been filled for the rest of the year. Please call, write or confront me at the next MPBPA meeting if you are interested in taking advantage of this great opportunity to market your business.
