Miner Works of Art ~ Newsletter

Greetings!

Greetings! It's finally Spring and it's starting to feel like things are picking up for everyone, or at least I hope so!  It's getting busy for me, with new shows and lots of new art that I hope to share with you.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and there are lots of festivities planned nationwide.  If you are in southern California and looking for a fantastic music festival, come join me at the KSBR Birthday Bash.

I have been doing a lot of new art that is designed for Design! If you are interested in new decor art, or if you are in the decor business, I've got exciting news:  I will be exhibiting at the California Gift Show, Beckman's West (a division for artisans) show at the L.A. Mart.  Art with an appeal to the design community will be strongly featured.  Of course, there's still lots of music art.  Music is such a big part of my life, so naturally, music art will always follow.

As you probably already know, Spaghettini Grill & Jazz Club is my home away from home.  Cary & Laurie, the owners, have invited me to have a private showing of new art.  Naturally, YOU are invited to the grand opening and "reception with the artist".  So, save the date, August 21, 2010, and we'll be sending out more details soon.

In addition to being an artist, I also love photography.  Many people have asked me for tips to make their own photos better.  So, I've added a new feature to the newsletter: Fun Photo Tips.  If you enjoy photography as much as I do, and have any topics you'd like to discuss, send me a note and include any photos you'd like to share and each month a new "Fun Photo Tip" will be featured.

Please have a safe and happy holiday weekend.  I hope to see you down the road, soon.

Warmest regards,

Bettie Grace Miner

Jazz Street Stroll
"Jazz Street Stroll" by Bettie Grace Miner

Congratulations to all the amazing nominees and recipients of the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards!

Bettie Grace Miner is proud to have been commissioned once again this year to create the award presented to the winners of the 2010 award.  It was "Year of the Sax" with David Sanborn receiving the George Benson Lifetime Achievement Award.  "Jazz Street Stroll" represents the color and passion of jazz, combined with the dedication of musicians and those that love them both.

The awards show was an amazing lineup of talent culminating in a finale with every one of the wonderful musicians joining David Sanborn on stage.  A VIP party followed which featured every sort of dessert and chocolate a girl could ever want.  The jam continued the next day and into the night at The Old Mill Inn & Spa.  All the guys (and girls) were there and put on a show that rocked Toronto.

Look for jazz art by Bettie Grace Miner to be featured in the
jazz club at
The Old Mill Inn & Spa very soon.

Fun Photo Tips
Bettie by Geoff Coe
Tip: Portrait Lighting

I have a photo studio full of professional lighting equipment and lots of other tools to make a portrait look perfect. But sometimes it's better and a lot more spontaneous to create a beautiful portrait or still life using natural light.

Tip: Find a window and place your subject (person, animal or object) next to it. The window light becomes your light source and allows you to capture soft, beautiful light (especially on an overcast or cloudy day). If you can, turn off your flash.  If not, change your angle just enough so that the flash doesn't fire.  Place your subject at an angle so that the light splits the face, with just a little spill on the opposite cheek and you will have stunning "Rembrant" lighting.

Peoples
Example: Recently, I was in Toronto  with The Wave's Mary Kirk. It was a very cloudy day. While we were touring a quaint area with lots of little shops and galleries, I spotted this great window seat. ~By the way: I was using a "point and shoot" style camera, not a pro camera.~ Mary agreed to be my model, and I really love how the photo turned out.

If you give this a try, I'd love it if you share your photos with me.  You can see more examples of my portraits on my website:

Terje Lie and Bettie got together to do photos for "Urban Vacation" and had a lot of fun doing it!

We even got Terje Lie in a hammock on the roof of Bettie's loft/studio.  He probably just needed a nap after creating all that great music!
