The Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival is quickly approaching the last weekend of its annual three week long festival. Show tickets, hotels and boat rides to the Island are just about sold out, so I wanted to give you a little reminder to come to the Island and join us! It has been fun hanging with Jazz fans and Jazz artists! You just never know who might stop by the art exhibit. And I'm not alone. There are some distinguished artists and galleries sharing the Catalina Casino space with me. Chances are you will find us checking out each others art whenever we can. If you haven't made plans to come to Catalina yet ~ what are you waiting for? It's just 26 miles across the bay (sing it with me, now)! See you soon! With warm regards, Bettie Grace Miner ![]() Photo by Randy Galligan
Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival October 2008 ~ Avalon Casino Ballroom Official Artwork for Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival Merchandise, by Bettie Grace Miner.
Photo by Pat Benter During October 2008 you will find Bettie Grace Miner with an exhibit of jazz art Inside the historic Art Deco "Casino" on Catalina Island for the JazzTrax Festival. The "Marine Bar" which has been converted to the new "JazzTrax Sports Bar" is on the Mezzanine level of the Casino, right next door to the JazzTrax store. It is serving as an art gallery for Bettie and other amazing artists. Many people ask if "The Casino" was, in fact, a casino at some time. Actually, the word "Casino" literally means "a gathering place." The Casino on Catalina Island was never a gambling place, but a gathering place. And it still is! So, if you are attending the festival, please be sure to come by and see all the art and artists.
Some very creative people are keeping company with Bettie on Catalina Island. Have you ever seen a lamp made from a musical instrument? Jake Ruth has been creating these bright and jazzy lamps out of instruments, including Rick Braun's trumpet, to the delight of many music lovers. Paul Jackson, Jr. came by to say hello to all the artists when he stole the show during the second weekend of the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival. Pictured are Paul with Jake Ruth as well as with Donna Ruth and Bettie Grace Miner.
Photo by Jim Boyle Leslie K. Webb of C-Lite Designs, who creates those amazing sculptures of legendary jazz & blues artists is on the Island and has a full display of his Copper, Brass, and Pewter Sculptures. R.K. Kidd II (www.UglyHands.com) is also at the Casino with some very hip T-Shirts and art prints. Also keeping company with Bettie is the Catalina Artists' Market ~ A gallery that features Catalina Island's largest collection of original "Catalina" art by more than 20 artists. See more at: www.CatalinaArtistsMarket.com.
The L.A. Chillharmonic ~ featuring Richard Smith ~ Rocked the Casino L.A. If you still need a place to stay this weekend, give a call to my friends at the El Terado Terrace - Mini Suites on Catalina Island ~ they only have three rooms left on this sold out weekend. The El Terado Terrace has mini suites at hotel prices. The suites are recently remodeled with full kitchens, big screen TV's, wireless internet, and lots of other amenities. They'll even provide transportation between the boat dock and hotel for you! Here is a little note from the owner, Bruce Ellison: "We have just remodeled our Mini Suite Hotel. It's all new. The suites are a spacious 300 to 400 square feet with full granite kitchens, completely equipped, full sized refrigerators and stoves. The rooms feature king and double/double beds, new large 37" flat screen TV's and classic Catalina art by a local artist. Several rooms have ocean views. We also have a private sunbathing patio, another garden patio with BBQ facilities surrounded by palm trees and flowers. We are looking forward to seeing you." (Hint: Click on the El Terado Terrace logo to see photos of a few of the rooms.)
"Beauty's Eyes" by Bettie Grace Miner On a Non-Catalina related note: As you may know, Bettie Grace Miner is a passionate advocate of wildlife and domestic animals. One of the organizations that Bettie works with is Animazonia Wildlife Foundation in Perris, California. This is a group of women who work on a 100% volunteer basis taking care of and nurturing big cats. Bettie was honored to photograph the big cats and create art pieces of each of the marvelous creatures. Animazonia is holding a fundraising raffle of some of those prints and you have a chance to win! Click on the Animazonia logo to go directly to the raffle website or click below on "Animazonia" to go to their website and find out more about this amazing group of big cats. Hurry ~ the raffle ends on October 25, 2008! P.S. Even if you don't win the raffle - you can own a fine art wild life print and help the animals. Just mention Animazonia when you order from Miner Works of Art and a portion of the purchase price will be donated to Animazonia to support these fantastic animals.
