Rhonda Laughing Dear Friends,

We're trying something new this month.  We'll still get you the updates on classes, regulations and a chuckle, but we're adding an issue each month.  This month is Disaster Preparation.  To quote Randy Jackson (yes, I've become an American Idol groupie), "check it out."

Hoping to see all of you soon in a classroom or online.

Disaster Planning for Residential Care

No one ever believes that a disaster will actually strike them.  Here in California, we have lived through earthquakes, fires and floods, so we should be prepared.  And yet, many facilities are not as prepared as they could be.

Kathy Sturkey, Executive Director of LARC Ranch in Saugus, was up close and personal with a fire that damaged buildings on the property.  Over 100 people were safely evacuated to a Red Cross location.  Kathy can't stress enough the importance of disaster drills.  The preparation that saved LARC included having a suitcase in each area, into which staff could easily pack medications, emergency medical release forms, and water.

LARC has since purchased a satellite phone to maintain contact with emergency personnel.  She also suggests that facilities invest in a back up generator.

Medication Manuals Still a Bargain

medication bottleEven if you have met the training requirement for staff to meet the legislative requirements of AB 2609, staff must have four hours of training on medication assistance every year.

Check out our SMART (Safe Medication Assistance with the Right Training) Manual or CD - full of information, knowledge check points, and activities.  You can use the material over and over, making your minimal investment of $139 a very wise decision.

Some things for RCFE administrators to keep in mind:

Be sure that the hands-on shadowing is documented for each employee who is assisting with medication.

Be sure that you have all of the documentation about the training program and who developed the program in your facility files.  SMART was developed with consultation from a Registerd Nurse AND
a pharmacist - so it exceeds the legislative requirement.

Make sure that all medications not prescribed or discontinued are given back to your pharmacy, if they will accept them, or otherwise destroyed.

Check with us if you have staff that need training.  We are scheduling more training to meet the continuing need.

Something light.......

Who says there isn't a positive side to aging?  Here's a few:

Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.

Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.

Your eyes won't get much worse.

No one expects you to run into a burning building.

There's nothing left to learn the hard way.

Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service.

As always, I appreciate your continued support of our training programs.  Please feel free to check in with us periodically.  We love to hear about your successes.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Mayer
