Medication: the SMART Approach

Community Care Licensing Licensing Program Analysts will begin to enforce new regulations about medication training in January 2008.  Briefly, the law requires that RCFEs with under 15 beds provide 6 hours (4 content, 2 "shadowing") of training to staff who assist residents with medication.  RCFEs with over 16 beds must provide 16 hours (8 content, 8 "shadowing).

The SMART (Safe Medication Assistance with the RIGHT Training) Approach includes training in classrooms (co-sponsored with VITAS Hospice), a manual and a CD program that provide the information required in the new law.  The programs include exercises to enhance learning as well as knowledge checks and tests.  The programs were developed in conjunction with a pharmacist and a registered nurse familiar with CCL.

Memory Walk in Los Angeles

We are still recruiting members for our Los Angeles walking team for November 4, 2007 to support the Alzheimer's Association.

This is a great opportunity to network with others in the residential world, get some exercise and do a great thing for a great cause.
