 A Better Alternative for Colonoscopy PrepIn October 2008 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force updated its colon cancer screening guidelines. The Task Force currently recommends three options: Unfortunately the mainstream preparation for undergoing a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy - a chemical solution such as NuLytely�, taken orally - is a prolonged and somewhat dangerous approach. As I highlighted in our May newsletter, the colon cleanse can be a viable alternative to a colonoscopy preparation. Recently I delighted in finding more research, reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, that using the colon cleanse to clear the colon of all fecal matter for a cancer screening is a sound alternative to the mainstream approach. In addition to examining the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of a lukewarm saline bowel cleanse as a colonoscopy preparation in comparison with NuLytely (a solution of PEG-3350, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride), the study also examines the beneficial role of yoga postures used in conjunction with the colon cleanse.
