Important information for everyone
The past several weeks, we have encountered a variety of problems with the water refill stations along the course including running out of water and people drinking out of the refill jugs. This past Saturday, we upped the quantity of water jugs on the course, only to have an entire water stop stolen before it could be used by many of our members. Obviously, this is a bad situation for everyone involved, and we have been reevaluating our water policy.
After consultation with organizers from other USA Fit groups, the USA Fit National Program Director, the USA Fit founder, and our local coaches, we have decided to fall in line with what other large USA Fit programs are doing, and implement the following changes in USA Fit San Antonio, effective immediately:
We will no longer be putting out gallon jugs along the course for refilling water bottles. Since we cannot guarantee there is no tampering or theft of these jugs, we do not feel comfortable with our members relying on them for their hydration.
We will be introducing one volunteer-attended water station along the course, for all courses over 5 miles in length. At this station will be iced water, trash bags and a first aid kit. The location of this station will be announced each week, and indicated on the course map. Responsibility for manning this station will rotate between the color groups, and can be staffed by friends, family, coaches or injured runners & walkers.
Additional water refill opportunities will be available at gas stations, restaurants, etc along the course.
All members will be responsbile for carrying the quantity and size of bottles that are appropriate for the distance of the workout. Here are some guidelines for planning your hydration plan:
* The general rule of thumb is 8 oz every 20 min
* For a 10 min/mile pace, that would equate to 8 oz every 2 miles
* For a 10 mile course, that amounts to 40 oz total
If you are only carrying a 16 oz bottle, you will need to plan on stopping several times to refill. Most brands, however, allow you to carry much more than 16 oz, which would be appropriate for the longer distances.
Personally, I use the Amphipod belt system and add bottles as the distances get longer, maxing at 4 x 8 oz bottles or 32 oz total. This allows me to refill about every 8-10 miles. That system also has a 10.5 oz bottle option available that increases your total capacity even higher. Remember to carry a mix of sports drinks & water or else carry capsules or gels for your electrolyte replenishment.
The bottom line is that you need to think through your own hydration needs and make a plan for addressing them. In Wednesday's newsletter we will send out the location of the water stop so that you can finalize your plan.
Thanks, everyone, for your cooperation in making this a successful season for the entire group!
