Greetings!

Last month I wrote about the effects of perception on our awareness and connectedness. This month I want to follow up with a little cultural analysis, talking about how a blockbuster film can subtly shift people's consciousness (or not) with profoundly different images than we've seen before.

With gratitude,

Fields of Consciousness

"This is a time of retuning ourselves, adjusting back and forth, establishing just the right amount of tension to be able to sing our true song, to vibrate and resonate ourselves into a new way of living, heart open, doing our true work, and actively participating in the story that comes from deep within the at-home, dreaming mountain's cave Night of us, awakening to walk into the world as a Warrior, respectful and empowered, embodying our strength."  -- Li Walters

"If the particles that we're made of can be in instantaneous communication with one another, be in two places at once, and even change the past through choices made in the present,  then we can as well."  -- Gregg Braden

"Consciousness is a field."  -- Dianne Powell

Imagine a society where we humans and other creatures live in resonance, attuned to each other's deepest selves. Imagine a society where all living beings are connected-through heart, sensation, breath itself...and imagine living your life as a conscious being in the heart of Gaia.

Avatar

Friends weren't sure I'd like the film Avatar because of all the violence. Certainly if I'd seen the trailer, I would have stayed away: it emphasizes huge military machines, holographic imaging for corporate "extraction," and lots of explosions-along with a few strange looking "aliens." (Note that alien means other, that-which-is-not-us.)

What's at the heart of the film, PR aside, is a culture living in resonance: humans, animals, plants, and trees connected, aware, and interacting with each other.

The power of the images used to convey a sense of life on the "alien" planet is amazing. Delicate jellyfish-like beings float in the atmosphere, sensing, feeling, and responding to the energy of those around them. Human and animal connect through filaments at the ends of their hair: when the filaments mesh, the two beings move into resonance and function as one. A mass of light filaments surrounding the central deity-tree moves gently in the breath of all that surrounds. When the clan people gather around this tree to heal someone, they link arms, sway, chant, and move as one organism with the tree. In the end, it is this resonance that allows the culture to defeat the fierce, terrifying attack machines and send the defeated earthlings away.

Of course, this is one perspective. Many people may miss, or dismiss, the implications, the potential and possibility for resonance and connection right here on planet earth.

Creating Fields of Consciousness

One way of exploring resonance that I've found especially powerful is a meditation for visualizing my energetic connections with places of power and places I love. By repeatedly creating a field of consciousness with my local mountains, rivers, bays and watershed; with places of power-mountains, standing stones, the still-revered spiritual places of the old ones; and beyond, to the cosmos, I experience my self as an integral and tiny part of a very large universe. This practice of connecting, receiving, expanding, breathing the energies of place is a way for us humans to return awareness and consciousness to ourselves-as-part-of-the-whole.

Our indigenous ancestors lived this way. Yet two thousand years ago our Judeo-Christian worldviews began separating us from nature and creating a hierarchy of humans-at-the-top. Part of coming into balance with the earth is to reorganize our thinking. Part of coming into right relationship is to see and experience ourselves in resonance with all beings, geologic and magnetic energies, and the whole cosmos. In this state, we learn (and re-learn) more and more how to live in harmony and care for our earth, our Pachamama.

Mystery

Prophesies from many cultures warn us of increasing challenge and chaos in the coming years. Devastating earthquakes in Haiti and floods in Peru are just this month's examples. Yet we know neither the specifics  (what's next) nor the root causes: Human negligence? Normal evolution? Global warming? Shifting magnetic poles? More important, we take specific actions to care for the earth and feed the balance, yet we do not know how, precisely any of these actions will affect the whole.

It seems parallel to raising children and learning to be adult humans: we all do the best we can, each one of us, always. And we can be more: more connected, more vigilant in living sustainably, more committed to shifting our consciousness.

This essentially spiritual work is mysterious because it requires leaps of faith: we do not know. We've been lulled in this free world to think our choices are Which car? Which house? Which yoga pants? Yet, truly, our choices are far more magnificent. How do we choose to nurture our hearts, feed our souls, and be resonant caretakers of the planet each day?

Harmony Within, Harmony Without
The powerfully transformative work of Medicine for the Earth encourages us to reconnect with nature and the elements, and to deepen our connection with the Divine. In April we'll be gathering, new students and old, to work together to transmute internal and external toxins. As we re-align ourselves, we will shine with the beauty, harmony, love, and divinity at the root of all transformation. Join us in Sonoma, April 4 and 18.

Earthkeepers Meditation
The Earth-Cosmos meditation was inspired by many ancient practices for working with light. It helps us align with the earth and the cosmos, becoming "trees of life." I use it daily to connect my filaments to sacred places, and to reweave the webs of light that surround us. Try the meditation.

Honoring Water in the Bay
Daniel Foor leads a series of water-focused, earth-healing ceremonies honoring water around the San Francisco Bay. Find out more.

Species Extinction and Habitat Loss
Watch video that connects species extinction with loss of habitat, and shows how the current developer practice of bulldozing without permit can quickly change vibrant habitat into a wasteland. San Bruno is a lovely mountain protecting many endemic species just south of San Francisco.
Turning Disappointment Into Joy
A "failed" service dog turns surfer, assisting her quadraplegic person and inspiring the rest of us by finding her true path. Watch video.
