Dear Friends at Bethany,

We cannot tell you how excited we are at the result of the vote at Bethany on September 25! We are overwhelmingly grateful for your trust and for the opportunity that we have together to impact the East Valley and beyond with the gospel.  We look forward to getting to know each of you! We consider it a privilege to worship, serve and live life with you.

Over the next few weeks and months, we will also be working behind the scenes with the staff and leadership to develop our long term plan to strengthen what is working, revitalize what is missing and focus on what is most important--people coming to Christ, growing in their faith, being equipped to serve and sent out in Christ's power and for His purpose.

We are praying for you...please pray us as well. Pray that God will help us all be united in spirit, intent on one purpose.   We believe in the people of Bethany and the redemptive power of God.   We look forward to what God will do in us and through us as we move forward together! Again, thank you for your trust.

Scott Ridout and Chad Moore

Lead Pastors

Change Is Coming to Bethany!

Congratulations, Bethany!  With our vote to join Sun Valley Community Church we have chosen our Change Path to implement God's will for our church!  We have decided as a congregation that we will be better together than we ever could be apart.  Much work has been done to get us to this point, and there is still much more work to do.  However, we are at a point to catch our breath and celebrate both our past and future.  There are many people who should be recognized and thanked for their work the last few months to get us here.

Thank you Nominating Committee for a fantastic job of running our voting process and managing it flawlessly.

Thank you Senior Pastor Search Committee for meeting tirelessly, developing a profile for our next Senior Pastor, interviewing Scott Ridout and Chad Moore, and being prepared to start a nationwide search should the merger not have been approved.

Thank you Bethany staff for doing an incredible job of keeping us learning about Christ as we prepared to vote and for being ready to continue to lead regardless of the outcome of the vote.

Thank you Danny Dodson for delivering impactful sermons to us, preparing us for the future.  Your message has become part of the culture of Bethany.

Thank you Bethany congregation for engaging in the process of making this decision.  You prepared both your heads and your hearts to seek God's will.

Thank you Sun Valley Community Church for working with us and going through the process together.

Thank you Elder Board for your endless meetings and endless leadership.

Glory to you, God, for making Your will known to and through Your people here at Bethany.

Yes, there is much more work to be done to get us to where we need to go.  It will take us some time to get the results that we believe God wants. However, for a moment may we just rest in the Lord and see that He is good.

God Bless,

David Chittenden, Elder Board Chairman

Missional Life:  Community Outreach Update

... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.      ~ Matthew 25:40

Children First Academy (CFA)

I want to thank everyone who has been so faithful in their giving to Children First Academy all through the summer, and now in keeping school supplies and donations coming to meet the needs of the entire family.  There was only one Sunday when there were no donations left in my car.

Children First LogoThe school year started with over 200 students and a waiting list to get in.  There is a new principal at CFA Tempe (Mr. Cooper), as well as several new teachers. In addition, they are enhancing their web site, making it easier to navigate and find information regarding operations and current school needs.

Their needs remain the same throughout the year for food and day-to-day supplies, but clothing needs change by season. At the present time, they are short of clothes in sizes 4-6 for boys and girls, especially for panties and boxers.  At the time of this writing there are no dry pinto beans or any rice on the shelves. The good news is that donations of these items won't spoil or go unused if they suddenly get a surplus.

As a reminder, and for new readers, donations can be left in my car trunk any Sunday morning. I park straight out from the South walkway entrance, between the trees. My car is a white Impala with license plate number 529-GAT. I pop the trunk so that you can easily leave your donations.  Questions??  Call me at 480.775.1771 or montgomery49@cox.net.

Thank you and God Bless,

Beulah Montgomery

iHelp LogoIHELP

In the 3 1/2 years that I have been involved with IHELP at Bethany, I am continually amazed at the blessings God has showered on this outreach. First and foremost, I am humbled by the generosity and faithfulness of the IHELP volunteers in giving of their time, energy and resources to provide food, shelter, and even clean sheets and towels for our homeless guests.

As powerfully as this impacts our guests when they arrive on our campus, it equally impacts those of us on the IHELP core team. We are touched by your open hearts, your willingness to serve and your cheerful smiling faces as you visit with our guests. IHELP could not help without YOU!

Even more profound than this is seeing the hand of the Lord at work. More times than any of us can tell, we would only pray for a need and it would be met: an open meal would be taken; an extra volunteer (or five!) would come forward; a new servant with a heart for the dispossessed would step up and fill a void. I have seen God's heart and His faithfulness at work in a very tangible way. I have learned to give all the concerns of my life into His care. He is to be trusted and His promises are true. As it says in Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.  Amen!

Again, heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to IHELP: facilitators; hosts; servers; dishwashers; cooks; shoppers; lunch packers; drivers; doers of laundry--the list is endless. God bless you all!

Communion or Communication

Are we looking to communicate with God or commune with Him in our prayer life? That was an idea brought to my attention while reading an interview recently between former CBS anchor Dan Rather and Mother Theresa.

Rather asked, When you pray, what do you say to God? Mother Theresa replied, I don't say anything. I listen. Rather continued, Okay, what does He say? She responded, He doesn't say anything. He listens. Rather didn't know how to continue--he was baffled. Mother Theresa then added, And if you don't understand that, I can't explain it to you. Praying Woman

How many of us can understand that kind of prayer intimacy, that kind of prayer communion, with our heavenly Father? Yet isn't that exactly what Adam and Eve experienced with God in the garden of Eden, what Jesus experienced throughout His earthly walk (I and the Father are one), and what God desires for each of us through a personal relationship with Christ (walking in, and filled with, the Holy Spirit)?

Jesus Christ is our treasure, not only for eternity, but for the presen,t as well. We can experience Him as our present joy when we realize that prayer is more than communication with God, it is the communion of unity with Christ in this present age.

Drawing closer to Him with you,

Your Partners-in-Prayer

MSM's Fall Lock-In a Success!

Last month, MSM had a sold-out Fall Lock-In!  Fifty middle school students (some brand new to Bethany) and their leaders gathered in the MSM room for some wild games and fun.

Next, we had a lesson and all the students heard about Jesus Christ!  Then we headed to Airworx, a trampoline entertainment center, for lots of jumping, slam-dunking and fun.  Afterwards (past midnight!), we went to Laser Quest for two hours of middle-of-the-night laser tag!

We finally returned to the MSM room to crash or watch a couple movies.  In the morning, we had breakfast and played a couple fun games outside.  Thanks to all the middle schoolers who came and made this event such a success!  I'm proud of you guys for bringing your friends!  I'm excited for what God has planned for us moving forward.  Love you all!

Children's Ministry Fun!

Transformer Game Night with PrimeLifeGame Night 1 Sept 2011

Everyone of all ages had a great time at our Transformer Game Night where we combined generations by bringing our fourth and fifth graders together with our senior adults (members of Bethany's PrimeLife community).

Friday, September 16, was a fun night filled with laughter, good times and great memories!  New connections were made between 23 kids and plenty of senior adults.  We even had three kids attend who were brand new to Transformers!  Thanks to everyone who came and played--you helped make this event a great success!
