Worshiping Together at Bethany! |
On Sunday, January 30 we announced an exciting next step in the life and ministry of Bethany Community Church--worshiping together in one service on Sunday mornings starting February 27, 2011.
After an eleven-year experiment with worshiping in two distinctive worship services, we believe it is right for us to return to our roots as a church family and begin worshiping together. While there have been some blessings along the way in worshiping in separate services, divided along musical styles (and largely along generational lines), we believe that the blessings and benefits of worshiping together as a church family across the generational lines and honoring a wide variety of musical styles far outweigh the challenges of worshiping together.
Our new Sunday morning schedule beginning February 27 will be:
9:15-10:30 Worship together in the Worship Center,
Children's Ministries
10:45-12:00 Children's Ministries, Student Ministries,
Adult Faith Communities
This schedule allows us to start the day together as one body in worship and celebration, sing and praise together, hear the Word together, hear Faith Stories, witness baptisms, baby dedications and receive communion together, then scatter to Faith Communities for face-to-face friendships, fellowship, equipping and teaching.
Our goal is to offer Children's Ministry programs both hours (9:15 and 10:45) to all children--birth through Grade 5. While children are always welcome to attend worship with their families, having two hours of children's programming will provide families more individual options for younger family members. Each hour of children's programming will be age-specific and unique to provide a child who stays throughout the morning with different experiences both hours.
The new start time of 9:15 signals that we haven't cancelled one service and preserved the other, but are doing a new (actually old!) thing at a new time--worshiping together!
We considered many different schedule configurations and have adopted this one believing that it best serves our purposes of coming together for worship and then scattering for community life.
What about music? Bethany has historically been a church that worships through both contemporary and time-tested hymns and songs. Worshiping together means that we will worship with both new and familiar hymns and choruses that are contemporary to the time we are living in, as well as utilizing the best of older worship hymns, songs and choruses. Our musical catalog will include everything that is true, beautiful, accessible to our congregation and that will bring glory to the One we are worshiping.
I am excited about this next step in our journey as a worshiping, serving and loving community of believers. Sunday, February 27 will be a great day for Bethany. Come praying and expecting a fabulous time in the presence of our great God and Savior!

A Call to Prayer |
The elders and pastors of Bethany are calling everyone at Bethany to come together for an evening of prayer on Sunday, February 13 at 6pm in the H Building. There will be programming for children up through grade 5, and we are inviting Middle School, High School and College students to join with adults of all ages for an evening of prayer for our church and our impact in our community.
Specifically, we want to pray for our leaders, for the people who are serving in dozens of ministries on the Bethany campus and in the community, as well as for the strategic launch of our Worshiping Together on February 27. We also want to pray for God's financial provision for our church and for the families of our church, many of whom are struggling through the most difficult economy in many years.
We believe prayer matters. Prayer changes things. And prayer changes us! Join us Sunday, February 13 at 6pm in the H Building for an evening of prayer.

Missional Life--Community Outreach Update |
... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. ~ Matthew 25:40
Matthew 25 Sunday: Along Side Ministry Clothing Drive
On Sunday, February 20, the Bethany church family has the opportunity to help support the great work done by our partner Along Side Ministries. Each year Bethany hosts a clothing drive to provide much needed clothing items for the needs of this excellent ministry.
Items to donate:
- Good, clean, usable men's and women's clothing
- Men's and women's shoes
- ALL fabrics (must be clean) such as torn clothes, rugs, comforters, towels, sheets, curtains etc. Fabrics will be sold to a recycling company and the cash used to support the ongoing work of Along Side Ministries.
Along Side Ministries (ASM) is in its twelfth year of serving Christian men and women coming out of prison. Each year, Along Side Ministries provides immediate assistance for hundreds of people who are released from prison with only the prison blues on their backs. Clothing, toiletries, training for online employment search, food vouchers, bus passes and help linking to other community support services are all made available. The men and women in the residential Discipleship Training Programs also benefit from clothing donations.
A truck from Along Side Ministries will be on campus on Sunday, February 20, to
receive your clothing and fabric donations.
Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 25: I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
Thank you

Help Save a Life! The United Blood Services BloodMobile will be on the Bethany Campus in the north parking lot Sunday, February 13, 7:30 am-12 noon. One of our own Bethany Community Church families could directly benefit from you donating. Bonnie Codier, whose mother is the music teacher at Bethany Learning Center, has a mitochondrial disease which requires her to have routine blood transfusions. By your donation, it would help make sure the hospitals have an adequate supply of blood that Bonnie and others need. Register online today at www.bloodhero.com or stop by the table in the courtyard on Sunday mornings to sign up. - Adriane Grimaldi, agrimaldi@bethanycc.com Children First Academy (CFA) Thank you to everyone who helped to make a better holiday season for the children and their parents. The toys, games, ornaments and decorations were appreciated and added smiles and joy. The donations of food and clothing are always needed. If you have excess citrus, don't let it go to waste-donate it to CFA! I can take small amounts for you. If you have larger amounts you can take them directly to the school at 1938 East Apache Boulevard in Tempe during school hours.
Special needs this month are: pencil top erasers, colored markers, scotch tape refills for desk dispensers, reward stickers, card stock paper and valentines for the students to exchange. Thank you for your continued support of CFA children and families. Questions or comments? eMail me at montgomery4@cox.net or phone 480.775.1771 - Beulah Montgomery

Praying for Your Enemies |
Love your enemies...and pray for those who....persecute you. ~ Matthew 5:44
Maybe it's someone in your immediate or extended family. Maybe it's someone you work with or one of your neighbors. Maybe it's one of your friends or acquaintances at school. You know who they are. It's that one person who seems to always go out of their way to embarrass you, to call you a name, to crack some crass joke when you are around. That person who is always willing to challenge your faith. And they always seem to have a quick put-down when you share about a personal experience where the Lord has been so good to you.
Then you read Jesus' words above, ...and pray for those who persecute you. And you ask, how and why? And the answer is clear: because Jesus did the same for those who persecuted him. And because God knows what is best for us. Pray for those who persecute you. Pray and forgive. Pray that they will have ears to hear, and a heart that is open to the wonderful salvation message of Christ. God has forgiven us and he wants us to be free by forgiving others. And one day, just maybe, your words will sink in, your prayers will be answered, and God's grace will become real in the lives of those who are so opposed to God's message (and you) at this time. Be diligent and keep on praying.
God Bless,
Partners-in-Prayer Team

Bethany's iRUN for IHELP Team Succeeds at Half Marathon! |
On January 16, Bethany's team of middle school students, high school students and adults completed the P.F. Chang's Half Marathon in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe! Every runner was able to run within the required time limit and earn an incredible finisher's medal. I am so proud of everyone for their three months of hard work in training. And here's the best part of all . . . we did it all for the glory of God and to benefit the homeless of Tempe!
The athletes exceeded their goal of $1,000 by raising just over $1500 for IHELP! I am so excited about how God will use this money to feed, house and otherwise provide love and care for the homeless of Tempe! Please join me in congratulating these students and adults!
After the race, we all joined friends and family at Barro's and ate as much pizza as we could . . . guilt free.
You can read more about iRUN for IHELP in this AZ Republic article.

Bethany Travels to Israel! |
We are planning a trip to Israel June 15-26 and we'd love for you to be a part of this exciting experience! This trip will be hosted by our own Bethany elder, Dr. David Denyer (Seminary professor and Ph.D. in Mediterranean Archeology). Dr. Denyer has lived and studied in Israel and has been to Israel many times. He will serve as our host and leader. Our professional guide (licensed by the Israel Ministry of Tourism) is Dr. Bryan Widbin, Professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages at Alliance Seminary in New York. Our tour will be arranged by Phoenix-based Maranatha Tours (operating since 1974).
This Trip Is Unique
This unique visit to the Holy Land will be more than a vacation or a tour; it will be a wonderful spiritual experience in the land of the Bible. Our tour will be a chronological journey, first things first and final things last:
-Anticipation: Old Testament sites connected to the promises of a Messiah and the lives of the patriarchs and matriarchs of Israel
- Birth & Boyhood of Jesus: Sites in Galilee (Nazareth), Judea (Jerusalem & Bethlehem)
 - Commencement: Sites connected with the beginning of Jesus' ministry
- Distinction: Sites in Galilee connected with the preaching and healing ministry of Jesus
-Exiting: Sites in Upper Galilee and the Golan connected with Jesus' withdrawal from the crowds
- Finalizing: Sites in the Jordan Valley connected with Jesus' drawing together of his ministry
- Gloom & Glory: Sites in Jerusalem connected intimately with Jesus' final week on earth.
This Trip Is Not A Tour Or A Course
A typical tour in Israel is led by agents in that country. Tours depend on local guides who are trained well but sometimes don't connect with what travelers are looking for academically and spiritually. What is being planned will be richly informational, deeply inspirational, and refreshingly recreational. No time will be spent in traditional tourist shops or in classrooms. Every bit of the time in Israel will be given to representing an authentic experience of the Bible from within its historical, cultural and geographical context. Far from wearing out travelers, everyone will come home invigorated by hands-on experiences of being in one of the most important countries of the world today and in ancient times.
For additional information, contact David Denyer at 480.705.6739 or dddenyer@cox.net.

Family Reunion |
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. ~ Romans 12:15
Marge Webb and Carl Long lost their infant great granddaughter, Emilyn, early in January. Baby Emilyn had been born to this earth very prematurely before she went to be with the Lord.
Please pray for her family as they mourn their loss.
