Bethany Elder Nominees |
This year we have four nominees for the Board of Elders. Each has been actively serving the Lord both within and outside of Bethany Community Church.
Dave Weller
Dave and his wife, Debbie, have been married over 32 years. They have been blessed with four daughters and 11 grandchildren so far, with three more on the way in the first half of 2011.
After graduating from Ohio University with a degree in accounting, Dave served four years with the U.S. Navy, then went to work for the Department of Defense as a civilian for over seven years. Dave has worked as an administrator of group health benefits for most of the past 25 years: first with a bank, then with State of Arizona Government and currently with a private consulting firm.
Dave began his walk with the Lord at age 11, but really made a commitment with his whole heart at about age 25. Dave has been attending Bethany since the mid 1980s, and became a member in February, 1990. In the late 80's and early 90's, Dave and Debbie served together in Children's Ministry teaching pre-school.
From 1989 to 1997 they hosted a foreign exchange student each school year. They have been involved with the International Student program at ASU for several years and hosted visiting delegates from City of Phoenix sister city, Chengdu, China. Dave has served on the International Outreach/Missions Committee since 1996, including two years as chairman. He has made multiple short-term mission trips to Russia, Mexico and Thailand. Dave and Debbie are members of the Friends of Faith class.
Dr. Ben C. Eubank
Ben Eubank is married to Dona. They have four children and four grandchildren. Ben originally joined Bethany in 1990 and left for a brief period of time during which he served on the elder board of Crossroads Community Church. He served as their chairman along side Pastor Hendrix who at that time was their senior Pastor.
Ben's gifts include administration, teaching and motivation. He is active in service, having served humanity in thirty-nine countries. Currently he serves Bethany in Children's Ministry.
Ben owns and operates two out-patient surgical centers where he is responsible for integrating and managing a large staff of doctors and nurses, as well as working with state and federal agencies. Ben has been awarded a Life Time of Service Award by the President of the United States.
Jim Crocco
Jim and his wife, Ginny, have attended Bethany since 1991, becoming members soon thereafter. They have been active in a variety of ministries, including worship, greeting and small groups. They have three children and five grandchildren, and are blessed to have them all living nearby. They met in Arizona and were married at Williams Air Force Base in 1979.
Jim became a follower of Jesus when he first visited Calvary Baptist Church in Roseville, California, where he and Ginny were baptized together in 1982. They moved back to Arizona when Jim starting working for McDonnell Douglas, now Boeing. In 2001, Jim retired from the Air Force Reserve after serving 25 years on reserve and active duty, including a combat tour of duty during Desert Storm. His undergraduate engineering degree is from the Air Force Academy, and he earned his master's at Columbia University. For relaxation, Jim enjoys golf, jogging, in-line skating, watching the Diamondbacks, or playing with the grandkids.
Jim served on the Board of Elders twice in the past for nearly 5 years, including acting as chairman twice. He last left the Board to become the part-time Executive Pastor in 2007, and full-time in 2008, before returning to be a volunteer in 2010. Currently, Jim facilitates a Bethany small group, sings on the worship team and in choir, greets on Sunday mornings, and helps with the Bethany website.
Dale Huizingh
Dale is an Arizona native and came to know Jesus as his savior at age 10. He is a graduate of Marcos de Niza High School and Arizona State University and works as an accounting manager for Empire Machinery in Mesa.
Dale and his wife, Kathy, have been members of Bethany since 1980. He is a member of the church's Finance Committee and helps organize Habitat for Humanity "Get Serving" opportunities. He has also served on the Elder Board three times previously.
He enjoys hiking, fishing, reading, travel and spending time with Kathy and his daughter and new son-in-law.

Missional Life--Community Outreach Update |
... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. ~ Matthew 25:40

IHELP
It is a new year, but circumstances for many have not changed for the better. The IHELP program continues to have the same needs it has had in the past. Please check out the volunteer opportunities and become involved as led by God. If something is missing in your life, could it be the lack of serving others?
In case you have missed all the media coverage on Dave Talley, check out this website. Dave is a participant in the IHELP program. Many of you would have seen him on campus during hostings at Bethany in 2010. Read through this article, as well as the additional links you'll find there. Isn't it great to know that there is still integrity in our world?
Does your concern for others really mean anything to anyone? Following are the thoughts of one IHELP homeless guest.
IHELP Guest & Coordinator
Your soul and yourself,
Never seeking return,
From those you help.
The cooking the cleaning,
To most just a chore,
Yet you do and do,
And then do more.
The talks, the hugs,
The encouraging smiles,
That lighten the load,
If for only awhile.
Helping the souls,
Downtrodden and blue,
To see that life,
Can start anew.
So, with all my heart,
I would like to say,
Thank you to all,

Thank You! From Streetlight to
Bethany Community Church
After a year of many challenges and countless sleepless nights, wondering how we would be able to accomplish such a worthy mission, we look back on the year 2010 with much gratitude and awe in the way the Lord has certainly been at work. We've made much progress, more than we can state in this small article, and much of it is due to your commitment to justice and your consistent support of StreetLight. So before we go on, we want to say, Thank you! We realize, more with each month that passes, that this mission is not our own and can only be accomplished through partnership with each of you. Thank you for your sacrificial giving, your continued encouragement and the hope that you hold in your hearts that child sex slavery really can be eradicated in our Valley. You are a true inspiration and blessing to us all!
You may be asking yourself, So what exactly have we accomplished in 2010? I'm so glad you asked! Here are a few highlights that we're excited to celebrate with you: 6000 Volunteer hours, 20 Branded screenings, at least 300 individuals have participated in 12 volunteer orientations, 60 work teams, visits by Governor Jan Brewer and Congressman Trent Franks, tougher penalties for johns issued through the passing of HB 2238, the new hire of the Director of Residential Services and much more! In addition, we're excited to announce that we are one final inspection away from being a licensed facility by the State of AZ. Once that happens, we will then officially and legally be allowed to accept the first residents (survivors). We're excited for this next step in our journey and ask for your continued prayers in the process.

Lay Down Your Life |
The words of the Lord Jesus as recorded in John 15:13 read, Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
Elisabeth Elliot once wrote, One way of laying down our lives is by praying for somebody. In prayer, I am saying in effect, 'My life for yours.' My time, my energy, my thoughts, my concentration, my faith - here they are for you.
Can we be counted on by both Jesus and our friends to lay down our lives for them in prayer on a daily basis? Are we willing to give our time and our energy for someone else by lifting them up before the King of Kings? Are we ready to give our all-in-all for our Lord and Savior as He gave His life for us?
Later in John 15 Jesus says that He chose us and appointed us to go and bear fruit. Could not part of that fruit be spending time laying down our lives for others through prayer? As we journey into 2011,may we find a greater awareness of our need for God and our dependence upon Christ for all things as we spend time seeking His will. In this important and meaningful way, may we be found laying down our lives for others in this new year.
God Bless,
Partners-in-Prayer Team

UthBuild Goes on a Good Will Mission to Mexico |
Rather than begin the holiday break in our pajamas drinking hot chocolate, UthBuild made a trek to Sonora, Mexico, to share goodwill and God's love. With the generous donations of toys, blankets, food and clothes from the Bethany Community Church family and others, we were able to help more than 30 families. Barbara Fuller and Ron Finger organized this trip that allowed them, Pastor Dave Robinson, and 16 other adults and UthBuild members to renew friendships, pray and share the love of Jesus Christ during the Christmas season. Bethany Learning Center, led by Pat Sullivan, helped contribute such cherished toys as Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels, teddy bears and board games.
What was exceptional about this trip was that we were able to visit all nine homeowners for whom we have built in the past two years. It was heartwarming to see the smiles on the faces of the children as they received a shiny truck, a candy cane or new board game. Warm, wintry handmade beanies were knit by Becca Goodwin, Elecia Caraballo, Rylee Finger and Lyndzee Dietz, keeping 60 heads warm during cold winter days and nights.
The highlight of the trip was when we stopped at Reynaldo's home. We greeted him, his lovely wife, Cecilia, and their six beautiful children still at home with them. As Reynaldo praised God for answering his prayers for some encouragement and food, their family blessed us by singing How Great Thou Art in Spanish. There were many tears of joy and gratitude shed. This could not have been a more spiritually perfect moment in time.
As we look ahead to 2011, UthBuild is already preparing to go to serve the poor in Rocky Point March 13-18. With God's grace, we hope to build two or three houses for hurting families who need the blessing of a home and the truth of the gospel to be shown to them. Almost 900 square feet of roofing will be laid and 42 rafters cut. One hundred eighty three studs will be cut to support these hand-constructed homes. Over 2,050 feet of stucco is carefully mixed and applied to the house. Along with all the building efforts, in one week we will feed the crew and neighbors at least 240 peanut butter sandwiches for lunch; grilled potatoes, onions, eggs and bacon for breakfast; not to mention burgers, chicken and fajitas for a crew of 30.
If your heart calls you to build, please contact us through UthBuild.org or at UthBuild@yahoo.com. If your heart calls you to donate, please contact Pastor Dave Robinson for more information. The students of UthBuild need to raise $12,000 to fund the building of these houses.
Thank you for sending us to these beautiful people, bringing Christmas to them in the form of nearly 400 pounds of rice, food, toys, blankets and beanies. You have blessed over 100 people with your gifts. We serve a mighty God-thank you for being part of the miracle. We are grateful!

iRUN: Students and Adults are Training Hard! |

A group of about 15 middle school students, high school students and adults have continued training for the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. I wanted to update everyone and let you know that we have now reached our maximum training distance of 10 miles. Everyone is now prepared (whether they believe it or not) to run 13.1 miles on Sunday, January 16! The students and adults have worked so hard and I am incredibly proud of them all.
The Bethany iRUN for IHELP participants have been training with the homeless of Tempe in mind. Each participant is raising at least $100 to donate to Tempe Community Action Agency, which is the group that provides many services, including IHELP, for the homeless of Tempe. If you are interested in supporting iRUN for IHELP, please contact me and I'll be happy to help you sponsor a student or adult. Also, we still need to sell several iRUN for IHELP training shirts. These shirts are sports shirts, include an original design and Bible verse and only cost $20...what a great way to support the participants of iRUN for IHELP! Just contact me or drop by my office.
Thanks again for all your support, Bethany family!

Children's Ministry |
Our Elementary kids and their families just finished celebrating an exciting and very interactive Advent season! At the beginning of Advent, each child made their own purple Advent calendar chain. Everyone took their calendar chains home and throughout Advent they invited their family members to participate in the daily activities spelled out on the rings (or links) of their chain.
The first ring read, Advent means preparation. Make a list of three things that you can do to prepare to celebrate Jesus' birth. Choose one and do it today.
Here is one parent's recollection of the family's participation that first day of Advent countdown:
Wow. Those purple rings are AWESOME! We did today's and the first thing the kids said was they would give Jesus 'a present.' Then my youngest child said with a big grin, 'the present we will give Him is us because He wants us!' And my oldest child wholeheartedly agreed. It was awesome. And then they said 'a cake.' After pondering their third thing, my oldest said, 'a song!' and we started singing...
Thank you...
So I guess we'll be making a cake for Christmas!
Happy New Year--may we continue to celebrate Jesus all year through! Bake a cake, sing a song, share Him with others; Jesus is Savior--today and forever!

Angel Tree Delivers Christmas Joy and Toys |
Dear Bethany family,
On December 19 the Angel Tree ministry delivered Christmas gifts to 28 families and a whopping 69 kids!
Our wonderful Bethany Bikers delivered to eight of those families, which is great! We would also like to especially acknowledge our very own Transformers (Grades 4 and 5) and leaders for helping to deliver gifts and share God's Word with children of incarcerated parents.
Thanks to everyone in our very generous church that gave extra toys which are being divided between Phoenix Children's Hospital and Toys for Tots. So amazing ... I am so proud of our church family!!

Craig Alan Niles passed away on November 16. He and his wife, Michelle, had only recently joined our Bethany family. He is further survived by daughters Tiffany and three-month-old Diana Elizabeth.
