Prayer Counts

Two Barna Research surveys from the 1990s provided the following results:

- 4 out of 5 Americans believe prayer can change what happens in a person's life.

- 9 out of 10 adults agree that there is a God who watches over you and answers your prayers.

- Only 1 out of 5 adults has a time of extended prayer . .  during the course of a week.

How about you?  Are you involved in an extended time of prayer daily, weekly?  If prayer is important, how can we--how do we--begin to bring focus and quantity to our prayer lives?  Where do we begin?  Micah 6:6 says, With what shall I come before the LORD?

Praying WomanWe can always come to Him with praise and thanksgiving.  Why not start this month, this week, by carving out some time to thank Jesus for His availability and willingness to listen to you?  Why not thank God and pray for the wonderful staff and elders we have at Bethany?  God is waiting to hear from you.  Are you willing to seek Him?  God Bless you on your journey.

Do you or someone you know need prayer?  Please let us pray with you and for you.

Community Outreach Update

... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.      ~ Matthew 25:40

Neighborhood Ministries Update
Thanks to all of you, we filled the truck to help replenish the Neighborhood Ministries store after their warehouse fire.  A team delivered all of the donations filling the 26-foot donated U-Haul truck.  To hear more about Neighborhood Ministries after the fire, check out the interview of founding director Kit Danley on Channel 3 news.

July Monthly Donation Date Change

Due to the July Fourth weekend, the monthly donation drop off in the courtyard for Children First Academy and I-HELP will be on July 11.  Please remember to mark the donation with the ministry for which you intend it.  Thank you.

Children First Academy of Tempe (CFA)

For the summer session, the school has multiple needs.  Particularly, summer clothing (especially shorts) for both boys and girls in sizes from 6 to 14.  Gift cards to WalMart also go a long way to help the child's parents meet their needs for daily living.  Check out the website for other opportunities.

A huge Thank You to all of you who have so faithfully been giving to CFA.  It is greatly appreciated by the school, the families, and especially the children who have shared in your generosity.  The smiles of the children make it all worthwhile.  Thank you again and God bless one and all.

I-HELP

Have you seen the mobile shower unit that has been on Bethany's campus on Wednesday nights?  The most recent Tempe Leadership Class (a nonprofit program of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce) gave the mobile shower to the I-HELP program.  Why?  Because of the intense heat in Arizona, homeless individuals struggle to obtain and maintain gainful employment due to the lack of proper hygiene.  It is being used several nights a week in conjunction with I-HELP Hostings.

I-Help Mobile ShowerThe unit is housed by the City of Tempe and transported to the appropriate hosting site.  The shower is being used at Bethany for the Wednesday hostings during the summer. This has resulted in new opportunities for service:  a shower unit driver and laundering of up to 35 towels (per hosting night).

There were several towel drives in the community to provide Bethany with the necessary towels for the showers.  Girl Scout Troup 1174 (yes, you heard about them in the last newsletter) conducted a drive which resulted in a donation of over 100 towels.  These young ladies are at the top of the class.  Excess towels were donated to Urban Outreach programs as the need within I-HELP was exceeded.  Thank you Girl Scout Troup 1174!

Our homeless neighbors/guests in the I-HELP program are very grateful for the opportunity to get out of the present heat and sleep in comfort.  Thanks to all of you for your continued support of this program and being part of God's delivery system to these individuals in need.

For additional information on how you can get involved with the I-HELP program, contact Gen Garan, bggaran@earthlink.net, 480.839.4674, or Cheryl Chamberlain,  cheryllynn2u@yahoo.com, 480-838-5188.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have faithfully been hard-boiling eggs for Bethany's Egg Brigade.  These hard boiled eggs continue to provide basic nutrition to those in the Urban Outreach Shower Program.  They can't have too many, and the need continues as the numbers of those using the program are not going down.

God's servants from Bethany Community Church are now providing two meals a month at the Urban Outreach Evening Program.  These Bethany Culinary Angels continue to receive God's blessings for their time/effort.  Check out the possibilities.

New Short-Term Opportunity with Urban Outreach

Urban Outreach is working with several other organizations in Tempe in a new program--Tempe's Permanent Supportive Housing pilot program.

You can get involved immediately by donating items to help furnish the apartments.  Most of these people are starting with nothing.  Anything that would be used in setting up house is welcome.  Specifically, things like:  sofas, love seats, chairs, beds (mattress and box springs), book shelves, small desks, kitchen tables and chairs, coffee tables, end tables, lamps, TVs, TV stands, microwaves, vacuums, dishes, any small kitchen appliance, silverware, pots/pans.  You get the idea . . .

For more information on Urban Outreach's involvement, please contact Robin Manelis, rmanelis@cox.net or 602.577.7976, or Gen Garan, bggaran@earthlink.net or 480.839.4674.
