Open Elder Meetings

After much thought, prayer and discussion, the elders have opened the monthly elder meeting to anyone who would like to attend and observe. The elder meetings are on the first Wednesday of every month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Room D3 on the Bethany campus. Everyone is cordially invited to be present and listen as the elders pray, discuss and give leadership to our church.

Guests are invited as observers and listeners as our elders serve by leading. From time to time confidential information may be discussed where the elders close the open portion of the meeting, excuse guests and then the elders meet in a closed session to handle confidential matters like personnel or discipline issues that cannot fairly be done in an open meeting. But the overwhelming majority of all elder meetings will be open to anyone who would like to attend. Everyone at Bethany is invited to attend and observe. The May elder meeting is Wednesday, May 5 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Room D3.

Foster Parents at Bethany

We would like to know who all of the certified foster families at Bethany are. If you are a certified foster care family at Bethany (whether you currently have any foster children in your care or not), would you please let us know by telling us your name and contact information. We won't sign you up for anything or send you a bunch of spam email. We are planning to honor and celebrate the ministry of foster care to children in our community on a Sunday at Bethany later this summer. We want to make sure we include everyone at Bethany who is part of this ministry to children.

May Benevolence Offering for Camp Scholarships

Everything given to Benevolence during the month of May will go to scholarship aid to help children and students get to camp this summer. Thank you for giving generously and investing deeply in the lives of Bethany children and children in our community. Only eternity will measure the good your generous gift can do.

Many blessings,

Bethany Couples Raise Funds for Peruvian Couples' Retreat

Two Bethany couples, Rick and Penny Campa and Keith and Cecilia Holbert, raised over $1,800 in a January garage sale for a couples' retreat in Peru.  As a result, 17 couples from the poor hillside town of Flores de Villa, Peru, were able to get away for a weekend where they renewed their relationship with God and with one another in their marriages.

Peru Partners Garage Sale

The Campas and Holberts are part of the core team for David and Gina Stavros, Bethany's international partners ministering in Flores de Villa.  Gina Stavros said that for most of the Peruvian couples, This was a first-time experience and one they all said they wanted to repeat.

What motivated the Campas and Holberts to devote so much time and effort to this retreat?  In August 2008 the two couples traveled to Peru as part of a Bethany

Peru Couples Retreat 2010short term team.  In Flores de Villa they established strong friendships with many of these young couples.  Originally, their plan was to return this year to help put on the retreat.  However, because of the economic downturn, they all decided to raise funds not for themselves but for scholarships to make sure that all of the Peruvian couples could attend.  Even though they were not physically at the retreat, without their hard work the retreat never would have taken place.

Bethany Participates in Haiti Earthquake Relief

In January and February, Bethany's benevolence offering went to bring relief to earthquake victims in Haiti.  By God's grace, we gave over $18,000 which was given to Food for the Hungry (FH) for their ongoing work in that battered country.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit with Food for the Hungry staff in Haiti.  These dedicated people are making a difference in the lives of children and families who survived the earthquake, but have lost almost everything.

Haiti FH 5.10 A

We visited the espcially poor community of Siloe in Port-au-Prince where we witnessed the cash for work program in action.  Food for the Hungry offers short-term jobs clearing rubble and using it to rebuild roadways.  With the money earned, participants are able to put food on the table for family members.

Especially encouraging was the Child-Friendly Space that FH's Child Development Program is setting up in Siloe.  These Child-Friendly Spaces serve at-risk children in the community. They are designed to provide safe, structured areas for play, learning and trauma therapy.  Check out the video presentation on Child Friendly Spaces in Haiti:  http://vimeo.com/9647856

Thank you, people of Bethany, for your generosity.  Thank you, Food for the Hungry, for your Christ-centered work of love on behalf of the beleaguered Haitian people.

Foster Care Informational Meeting

Would you consider sharing your home, your love, your Savior with a child in need?  In Maricopa County alone, more than 2,000 children are in the foster care system--with almost 200 still waiting to be placed.

The Christian Family Care Agency (CFCA) takes seriously the admonition given by James to look after orphans and widows in their distress.  A number of Bethany families have already answered the call as foster families.  Would you like to find out how you could join their ranks?

Christian Family Care representatives will be on campus Tuesday evening, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room for an informational meeting about foster care and adoption.  There is no obligation, just information.  No registration or reservation is needed.

Volunteers will also be in the courtyard on Sundays, May 9 and May 16 to answer any questions. They will be joined at the table by the Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids.

For more information, check out the CFCA website.

Streetlight Update

Streetlight Workday 2On April 17 a group of 28 hard-working people from Bethany traveled to the West Valley to begin rehab work at Streetlight.  Bethany's specific project is the remodeling of Cottage Faith, one of six cottages that will house teenage girls escaping a life of sexual enslavement.  Another team is scheduled to continue the work on May 1.

Streelight Workday 1

These teams are adding sweat equity to the Easter Offering of $25,000 for Streetlight by the people of Bethany.  Thanks to everyone for your generosity of money, time and hard work as we GET OUT, taking the love and grace of Jesus to those that need him most.

I-HELP

Yes, it is the one year anniversary of Bethany's on-site hostings for I-HELP.  We have had the privilege of providing our homeless neighbors a place to spend the night on 21 occasions during that year.  Most of those times we also had the privilege of providing their evening meal and a breakfast/lunch bag for the next day, as well as some "special times" over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

So many of you enthusiastically embraced this program--with 30% of the participants returning to help out again.  More than 250 different individuals have filled over 550 roles this past year by contributing to, preparing, or serving meals or taking on one or more of the multitude of housekeeping tasks.  This number is even larger when taking into account those who participated in other general ways--donations of toiletries, clothing, miscellaneous items.  Thank you all for participating as God has led you.  And yes, there is still room for you to become involved!

By the way, did you recognize that Bethany's young people have been quite involved in the I-HELP ministry on campus?  These included the Transformers (fourth and fifth graders), the Middle School (sixth, seventh and eighth graders), young people as part of their respective families, and Girl Scout Troop 1174 (comprised of 25 girls ranging in age from five to 16) based out of Bethany Christian School and Bethany Learning Center.

These young people have enthusiastically assembled breakfast/lunch bags which were provided to our I-HELP homeless neighbors spending the night on Bethany's campus.  They also included encouraging notes in those bags to the guests and had some interaction with them, as well as serving dinner.

What do our homeless neighbors think about the youth participation in the program?  They love it.  Several have commented how much they appreciate the opportunity to interact with young people.  Something that is very much missing in their normal day-to-day life.

Many thanks to the leaders and parents of these young people as they are our future.  It is so important to help them learn and experience God's hand in many areas of life.

How do the people participating in the I-HELP program feel about this?  Stay tuned.  We will share some experiences and comments in the next newsletter.

Need more information?  Please check out the online link above or contact Cheryl Chamberlain, cheryllynn2u@yahoo.com or Gen Garan, bggaran@earthlink.net, I-HELP Volunteer Coordinators.

Bethany's Egg Brigade is providing breakfast nutrition to 60+ of our homeless neighbors taking advantage of the shower program on Monday mornings at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Tempe.

Several Bethany ladies are also working together to provide a meal once a month at the Urban Outreach Evening Coffee House.  This meal feeds about 75 of our homeless neighbors who are not in the I-HELP program.  Additionally, one Bethany Faith Community has made a financial commitment to this program.

Our homeless neighbors who are benefiting from the above two programs say Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Those involved are privileged to be part of God's delivery system to his children in need.  Should you be involved?

Children First Academy of Tempe  (CFA)

Remember, homeless school children have homeless siblings and parents.  They have the same needs as the homeless neighbors in the I-HELP program.  The school has a Wish List each month of items for the children that also extends to their families. For more information, contact Beulah Montgomery, montgomery49@cox.net.

Donations for Children First can be delivered directly to Beulah (please contact her directly) or they can be dropped off in the courtyard first Sunday of each month at the I-HELP table.  Please mark the items for CFA.

Times of Reflection

How much time do you take each day, week, or month sitting down with God to reflect on your walk with Christ?  Do you take time out of your busy schedule to sit with your Bible and reflect on a portion of scripture?  I must admit that too often my times of prayer are filled more with me talking and God listening.  But even then, God listens.  Jesus said in John 10:27, My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Praying WomanListening to and for the voice of Jesus can be difficult for many of us.  But when we do take time to listen it can be the greatest experience of our lives.  It can, and will, revolutionize our prayer time.  How about you?  Are you ready for a re-vitalization of your prayers?  In the next month why not take some time (schedule it on your calendar if you must) to get alone with God with no agenda but to listen for His voice and His plan for your life.  Get connected with God.  Jesus did on a regular basis.

May God's peace fill you with a plan that re-energizes your prayer life.  God Bless.

Transformers Selflessly Serve

The Transformers' student ministry (fourth and fifth grade students) has had many great opportunities to serve the local community both on and off the Bethany Community Church
campus this year.  The students enthusiastically assembled fifty lunch bags of great, healthy foods for I-HELP.  They also wrote and decorated uplifting messages that were included in each lunch bag.  The bags are provided to each I-HELP guest upon their departure from Bethany Community Church.

Transforner BannersAt a recent Transformer Lock-In, they enjoyed Bible study, as well as having fun and serving others.  They served St. Vincent DePaul by painting and colorfully decorating twelve huge Volunteer Appreciation banners, like the one shown here.  The banners were on display throughout April at St. Vincent's while theycelebrated and recognized their volunteer staff in the place where they serve and deeply affect the lives they touch.

The students also visited the Phoenix Rescue Mission in March.  They filled over seventy food boxes!  Even more could have been made, but the Mission ran out of certain types of food.  The students worked well together as they helped supply much-needed food for the poor and needy in the Valley.  Thank you so much to all the students that helped.

While serving, the Transformers learned that the Phoenix Rescue Mission has an urgent need for canned fruit. Would you please consider donating one or two cans (or even a flat) of canned fruit of any type?  Please drop off your donation either at the church office or in the Transformers' room (F1).  Thank You!

Summer Camps are Just a Month Away!

This summer Bethany Community Church is offering summer camps for children and students entering grades two through 12. These camps are absolutely amazing opportunities for kids to get connected with other kids, the pastor and leader of their ministry, as well as to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Each summer I am amazed at the incredible growth and development that happens as a direct result of these camps.  At camp, students have an opportunity to get away from their everyday life and truly focus on God.  When the kids return, they are often deeply passionate about Jesus Christ and are eager to grow in their relationship with Him.

Please consider registering your second or third grade child for Children's Camp, which takes place June 28-30 at Sun Valley Community Church right here in the Valley.  Students entering fourth and fifth grade are encouraged to come to Transformers' Camp at Prescott Pines from July 9-12.  Middle school students entering sixth through eighth grade will be headed to Forest Home in California from June 6-11.  Finally, high school students will be headed to Hume San Diego from June 27-July 2.  Sign your child up now at www.bethanycommunity.com/register.

Also, please note that May's benevolence offering has been dedicated to helping children and students get to camp.  Many families at Bethany struggle to have the funds available to send children to these summer camps.  Last year numerous families benefited from the benevolence offerings that the people of Bethany provided.  Please consider donating above and beyond your normal tithes and offerings to invest in the children and students of Bethany.  Your May benevolence gift will have an eternal impact on this generation of incredible young people!  Thank you so much for considering a generous donation.
