Palm Sunday: March 28

ONE SERVICE

We will all join together in the Worship Center for one tremendous service of worship and praise at 10am on Palm Sunday morning.

Good Friday: April 2

We will worship in quiet reverence and humility at the foot of the cross on Good Friday at 7pm in the Worship Center.

Resurrection Sunday: April 4

We will worship the resurrected Savior in two wonderful worship services on Easter morning at

 9am (Traditional worship) and 10:45am
(Contemporary worship).

A Word from Rich

Welcome Leah Henley and Dwight Brewer

I am delighted to welcome Leah Henley and Dwight Brewer as our new worship leaders. They will job-share the leadership of both worship services. Their unique backgrounds and their long-term musical collaboration make them the perfect people to lead our traditional worship at 9am and our contemporary service at 10:45am.

Leah Henley has a BA in Music Management from Grace College, Winona Lake, IN (1992). She has served as worship leader at Grace Community Church in Tempe (volunteer 1992-2001) and staff worship leader (2001-2006). She is an accomplished writer, composer, arranger, voice teacher and recording studio vocalist. Leah and her husband Chris have been married 19 years and have two children, Regen age 15 in nineth grade and Marcus age 13 in seventh grade--both at Rhodes Junior High School. Leah is also a docent at the Phoenix Art Museum. She is a gifted vocalist and worship leader, inspiring talented musicians and worshipers to offer their best in heart-felt worship and praise to the Lord.

Most of you already know Dwight Brewer, who has been our pianist this year. Dwight has a BA in Jazz Piano Performance from Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA (1983) and an MA in Organ Performance from ASU (2000). He has many years of church music and worship leadership experience at Grace Community Church, Arizona Community Church and Camelback Bible Church. Although he is a master at the keyboard (piano and organ), he also brings a great heart and sense for coaching, teaching and developing the musical gifts and talents of people who want to serve the Lord with their abilities. In addition to performing nightly at the Royal Palms Hotel in Phoenix, Dwight teaches piano students. In this new leadership position he will partner with Leah to plan worship, rehearse and coach players and singers, as well as play the piano and organ.

Leah and Dwight have worked together in church settings, professional performance and recording for 18 years. I am really excited about Leah's and Dwight's shared role. Leah will be the team leader, but they will work together as a team, maximizing their unique individual gifts and talents. I believe the combination of their gifts and personalities, as well as the depth of their artistic and leadership talents, are a great combination for leading our church forward in worshiping our great God and Savior.

Thanks to outgoing Elders

My special thanks to elders Ron Behee, Duane Ruegge and Nathan Merrill who are completing their three-year term as elders. They have each served faithfully and joyfully since March 2007. I am always amazed at God's goodness in using the unique personalities and gifts of different leaders who come together as a team of elders to serve the Kingdom of God, the people of Bethany and the community we are a part of. It has been a joy to see their commitment to the Lord Jesus and to this church family lived out in selfless leadership and shepherding of God's people at Bethany. Please join me in communicating your appreciation to Ron, Duane and Nathan.

New elders beginning three-year terms this month are: Tom Adams, Dave Chittenden, Don Kelley and Jack Seibert. They are joining elders Pat McCalla, John Hoffman, Dan Revel, John Ronan and Richard Hendrix.

Memory Verses

I have been encouraged by the number of people of all ages who have told me they are working hard to commit to memory these verses from Mark's Gospel this year. All of the verses (one a month) are from the Gospel of Mark and are the words of Jesus himself. Well worth remembering. Even if it takes some time and effort! Our verse for March is:  Mark 2:17 It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Many blessings,

Bethany Responds Quickly to Haiti Earthquake

Dan Mains Haiti 2010On January 12 Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was largely destroyed by a 7.0 earthquake.  As a result, over 200,000 people died, another 300,000 were injured and about one million people were left homeless.

Bethany responded quickly to save lives.  The elders decided to designate all benevolence funds through the end of February to Haiti relief.  ASU student Dan Mains and I were soon on the plane to join relief efforts (January 16-22).

John Wood Haiti Hospital 1 2010Dan and I flew to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic where we joined a group of Dominican church leaders to deliver truckloads of lifesaving supplies to Haiti.  On January 18, the group crossed the border and headed for a small Christian hospital located on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Supplies included 3,000 one-liter bottles of water, enough food for 200 families and basic medicines and medical supplies for the hospital's pharmacy.  The team also had medical personnel who administered first aid to people from the neighborhood.  For full reports and pictures see www.harvestfoundation.org.

John Wood Haiti Hospital 2 2010Following the trip, I continued overseeing Harvest Foundation's relief efforts in Haiti, in collaboration with the Harvest director on the ground, Pastor Guerino St. Simon. More and more supplies are reaching the beleaguered Haitian people in their time of need.

I invite you to check out an article I wrote reflecting on this disaster and the character of the Haitian people.

Thank you, Bethany, for seeing the need, feeling compassion and putting your compassion into action, just like the Good Samaritan (Luke 10).

- John Wood, Missional Life Pastor

Community Outreach Update

. . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."      ~ Matthew 25:40

I-HELP (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program)

Bethany's participation in I-HELP hostings has been a blessing to many people (including those who serve).

Who do you help when participating in an I-HELP hosting?  Following are just a few examples of the many people you give a hand to in providing food, shelter, encouragement and incentive for overcoming difficult obstacles in their lives.

"Linda" - A lady who was at one time a victim of domestic violence.

"Sandy" - A "senior" lady who doesn't have enough income to meet her needs.

"Dave" - A middle aged man who at one time hit bottom because of drug abuse.

"Lowell" - A middle aged man who owned his own successful business for over

20 years, but because of a variety of events, ended up on the streets.

"John" - A gentleman who lost his job and has nowhere else to go.

"Craig" - A young man with family conflicts.

Perhaps any these, except for the grace of God, could be you?  Each has found a helping hand in the I-HELP program, which operates in Tempe through the people of God -- the Church.

A promotional video on I-HELP is now available on YouTube.  Yes, some of the filming was done at Bethany! (If this link does not work from your computer, copy and paste the following address into your web browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ERT1aIFJc.)

Alongside Ministries Clothing Drive

I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.  ~ Matthew 25:36

Alongside Ministries thanks the people of Bethany for the great response to the clothing drive.  We contributed 2,600 pounds of clothing and fabric, which exceeded the expectations of the Alongside Ministry staff.  In fact, Alongside Ministries is using Bethany as their example for how Alongside partnerships with local churchs should work.  Thanks to all, and praise God for serving in this way.

Blood Drive

Thank you to the Bethany congregation for a very successful Blood Drive on February 14.  You are awesome! Our goal was to collect 40 units of lifesaving blood for our community. However, with 59 donors, we were able to collect 48 units!

We also had a great team of volunteers which made this blood drive such a

success: Bonnie O'Neal, Jim and Kristina Mahoney, Sheng Peng, Lois Erickson.

Student Ministry:  To Allow Facebook, or Not?

Several months ago, I broke down and finally got myself a Facebook account.  I didn't want to learn something new, and I was concerned that it would take over my life.  While there's part of me that regrets now being seriously addicted to the social networking site, I am so very grateful for Facebook.

I am able to keep in touch with friends from my childhood and college years, but I mostly use it to stay in touch with the countless students I have the honor of shepherding.  I learn so much about the kids from what they post on Facebook: how their day was; what happened at school; whether they're in a relationship or not; what they like and dislike; how they respond to friends; etc.  One student just now said that she likes the smell and sound of rain.  Who knew?  She has also let everyone know that she is now single and being single is "great!  You get to flirt with so many guys!"  Lovely.  Ugh. I regularly connect with students through Facebook that I otherwise wouldn't get to interact with as much.

A common question many parents of middle school (and even high school) students struggle with is, Is my son or daughter ready for Facebook--should I allow it? I have had some great discussions with parents and students about this.  Let's be real here: for students, they would all love to have a Facebook account.  For parents, though, there is reason for concern: Will my child get involved with otherwise avoidable drama on Facebook?  Will my child be exposed to pornography on Facebook?  Will my child avoid homework to spend countless hours on Facebook?  These are just a few of the good questions that parents should consider when exploring the privilege of Facebook for their son or daughter.

To answer a few questions, Facebook is now notably more popular than MySpace.  I used to have a MySpace page, but I haven't checked it since Facebook came into my life.  I have found that there is significantly less exposure on Facebook to sexual pictures or innuendo.  One of MySpace's biggest problems is people targeting individuals with "spam."  This often takes the form of pictures of guys and/or girls with revealing or very little clothing.  I have not found this to be the case with Facebook.  In fact, I don't think I have received any spam on Facebook.  Instead, each friend request has to be personally approved by the owner of the account to be accepted as a "friend."  This reduces the threat of inappropriate images and messages.  Parents, however, should remain ever vigilant to monitor their child's activity on Facebook.

I feel like I could say so much more, but I will conclude this article with some advice to parents of pre-teens and teens.  In MSM, I would say that no more than half of the students overall have a Facebook account.  Few sixth graders do, some seventh  graders do, and many eighth graders do.  I think this is indicative of when students are being permitted to have a Facebook account.  By the time a student is in seventh or eighth grade (and up through high school), many are probably ready for Facebook.

I highly recommend, though, that parents have a few strict rules in place.  One is that their account is public and open to you, as the parent.  You should know their log-in e-mail address and their password.  This will allow you to access their account and see what they've been up to.  A warning, though:  just like a text message, a student's comments or posts can be deleted.

The other day, I saw a seventh grade student on Facebook and initiated a chat session.  I was surprised that the student was up so late at night.  I was further surprised when I found out that the person writing back was the student's mother.  She explained that she was checking out what her son has been up to on Facebook.  She asssured me that she wasn't spying at all.  The student and his parents agreed that if he would be allowed the privilege of a Facebook account, his parents would have full access.  In other words, it would be very public.  After all, don't forget what the Bible teaches about secrets: For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. (Luke 8:17).

If you agree to allowing your son or daughter a Facebook account and he/she resists being open to you seeing his/her Facebook, that's perfectly normal.  Who wants their comments and posts read by Mom or Dad?  Explain that you simply want to protect him/her and ensure that he/she is acting appropriately.  Then, make sure that they request their favorite middle school pastor (that should be me) to be their friend!  We can partner together to keep an eye out for anything inappropriate.

While you're at it, you should break down and get your own Facebook account.  Why not?  If nothing else, having a Facebook account is a great way to avoid becoming old.  Yes, I just said that.  Another great tip is to not allow the student private Internet access in his or her room.  Get the computer out into the living room or family room and make sure everyone can see what's on that screen!

Thanks for the pleasure of partnering with you in ministry of the pre-teen and teenage students at Bethany.  I love what I get to do!!
