Join Jesus. Show Others.

In January we rolled out Bethany's new Mission Statement: Join Jesus. Show Others. On the first two Sundays of the new year, I shared how this mission statement describes our reason for being a church and our strategic plan for fulfilling our purpose as individuals and as a church community. (You can watch or listen to those messages on Vision 2010 at www.bethanycommunity.com). At the heart of our mission is joining Jesus: going where he is going; joining what he is doing in our world; aligning our lives with his; and becoming his followers.

But joining Jesus also means including others.  Pastor Timothy Keller says, God never pulls you in without
sending you out. Following Jesus always includes bringing others along. When Jesus called his first followers, a couple of professional fishermen, he invited them to follow him (join him on the journey); then he promised that he would send them out to fish
for people (bringing others along on the journey). Check it out in Mark 1:16-20.

Our strategy for Joining Jesus and Showing Others is four personal actions that focus on living out our faith, not just taking it in:

Get In to a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This is the first step in following him. Believe the good news he announced. Receive the pardon and forgiveness he offers. Trust him as your Savior and friend. And begin walking with him.

Get TogetherGet Together with others who are following Jesus. This means connecting with a small group of others who are following Jesus with their lives. It means growing together and sharing life with others who are on the same path with you.

Get OutGet Out and cultivate friendships with people who are far from God. We all have friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members already in our life circles that aren't following Jesus-in fact, they may be living very far from God. Jesus was always befriending and spending time with people like this. So should we. And as those friendships grow, we have opportunities to influence people toward following Jesus with their lives.

Get ServingGet Serving by meeting real needs around us. Every one of us has some gifts, talents, abilities, time and other resources that God can use to meet real needs if we will make them available to him. None of us can meet all of the needs around us, but all of us can meet some needs. This means seeing ourselves as servants more than as consumers--people who serve, help and care about others more than we care about being served, having our needs met or getting our way.

Not surprisingly, Jesus is the prototype and example for all four of these strategies. His life displayed all four of these priorities in perfect balance:

- He maintained a deep and intimate relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit--Get In

- He invested heavily in a small group of people who joined him on his life's journey--Get Together

- He cultivated friendships with people who were far from God--Get Out

- And he lived as a servant, caring more about serving others than being served--Get Serving

Let me suggest some transformational questions that will help us keep on track with Joining Jesus and Showing Others.

Our answers to these check-up questions will help propel us toward missional living-living as Jesus lived, fulfilling his purposes for our lives. And our lives will become a rich and eternal blessing to others around us.

- How is my daily walk with Jesus?

- How deep is my connection to others who are following Jesus?

- What conversations am I having with people far from God?

- What good am I doing in my community to help meet real needs?

Join Jesus. Show Others.

Community Outreach Update

. . . I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."      ~ Matthew 25:40

Matt25 Sunday LogoMatthew 25 Sunday, February 14

Sunday, February 14, provides two more opportunities for us to show Christ's love to our neighbors in need.  On this particular Matthew 25 Sunday we will have two opportunities:

- Clothing Drive for Along Side Ministries

- Blood Drive with United Blood Services

Along Side Ministries Needs Clothes and Fabrics

The men and women in our Discipleship Training Programs and those served by Prison Transition Services need usable clothing, shoes & fabrics. Prison Transition Services has helped several hundred men and women in the past year released in "prison blues" (clothing). They come to Prison Transition Services, located at Along Side Ministries' office, and receive immediate assistance, including clothing, toiletries, training for online employment search, food vouchers and bus passes.  They are also linked to other community support services as needed.

All Fabrics Are Needed - Rugs, towels, sheets, curtains, comforters, torn and well-used clothing.  All items must be clean.

Along Side Ministries (ASM) is in its 11th year of serving Christian men and women coming out of prison. ASM is recognized by the Arizona Department of Corrections as the premier model for transition from prison to society. The mentor program, in conjunction with training and programming at our Discipleship Training Centers, has proven successful over many years.  God loves His children coming out of prison, and has blessed ASM and the champions who give of their time and resources to minister to "the least of these."

Blood Drive

United Blood Services will bring their bus to Bethany Community Church on Sunday, February 14, from 7:30am to noon for a blood drive. Give blood. Be a hero!

Did you know . . . one out of every five hospital patients requires blood?  Make sure Arizona patients have the transfusions they need.  Find the hero in you.  Give blood three times a year.

Your single donation can save several lives because blood can be separated into components. In just one hour, you could be a hero for an accident victim, a person undergoing surgery and a child receiving treatment for cancer.

Here are ways to sign up:

1.  Go to www.bloodhero.com and enter the sponsor code BethanyCommunity (all one word) to set your own appointment.

2. Sign up at the Blood Drive table in the courtyard.

3. Call the Schedule Coordinator, Bonnie O'Neal, at 480.838.2916.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the I-HELP outreach ministry through Bethany and in God's name.  The love you have shown was sure to put a smile on God's face, your own and certainly the recipient's.

But, the needs continue.  To find out more how you can help those less fortunate through the I-HELP and/or related programs, please visit the Bethany Community Outreach web page.

Note from Partners in Prayer

Do you agree that a "Spiritual Awakening" is needed in this great nation of ours?  Could that be something that starts at Bethany Community Church?

Many here at Bethany believe that we as a nation need to be directed back to honoring God with all of our hearts, minds and souls.  We need to get back to our first love, Jesus Christ.  We believe that starts with prayer.  A sincere, faithful, worship-filled quiet time with God our Father, Jesus Christ our Savior, and led by the Holy Spirit.

If you believe this also, would you consider joining other like-minded people in meeting monthly for a time of prayer?  Would you be available to pray with others during one (or more) Sundays in the choir room during Worship time?  Would you be willing to come along side our staff, elders and congregation in your own quiet time with the Lord by praying for their support and protection?

Please email Harry Stanford at pryrwar@yahoo.com for more information.  God Bless.

Free Car Wash for the Ladies!

Women of Bethany--the Men's Ministry would like to show their appreciation and love for you by providing a free car wash during both services on Sunday, February 14. Drop your car off with the Valet at the west entrance before heading in to church and your car should be clean, shiny and ready for you when you return!

Faithful Early Childhood Volunteers - Part 3

In the December and January editions of the eNews, we highlighted the wonderful individuals who serve regularly as Sunday school teachers in the A building. Since then we have had some new folks join our Early Childhood Team of regular teachers. We want to welcome: Cynthia Elwick, Mike Goslin, and Harry and Erin Stanford.  And, we want to thank them for stepping forward to help love and teach the little people in our church!

Also, the Early Childhood Ministry could not go on without the many people who have been willing to fill in as substitute when the regular teachers have been sick or out of town. Helping out in this capacity are: Valerie Berry, Theresa Board, Kelly Brown, Lance Cretchfield, Pat Davidson, Dorothy Denyer, Shawn and Marcey Felter, Jennifer Hendrix, Barbara Hess, Amy Huizingh, Robin Johnson, Ron Kennedy, Theresa Koepke, Doug Larish, Greg Miller, Karen Noggle, Cindy Palmer, Beth Phillips, Diana Rhoades, Matt Rokusek, Amber Ronan, Sheri Ronan, Randy Schuster, Jacque Starks, Latha Thomas, and Polly Vogt.  A big thank you to all for your flexibility and willingness to help!

Thirdly, we would be remiss if we did not mention the faithful cadre of student helpers who serve in the A building during the 10:45 service.  These are: Emily Ames, Tiffany Gong, Trina Negley, Emily Quihuis, Katelyn Roberts, Megan Robbins, Emily Smith, Nicholas Smith, Alexa Tornquist, and Timberlyne Ziuraitis.  Thank you, students, for your care for the younger children!

And finally, there were some great people who helped to make Christmas Eve a special time for both the A building children and their parents.  So here's a special thanks to those "risk-takers:" Shirley Barnes, Ed Berry, John and Fran Carey, Larry and Bonnie Evearitt, Peggy Levesque, Missy Melheim, and Marnie Pickering. I trust your Christmas time was just that much brighter for having spent it with small children!

Each and every volunteer in the A Building is a special person who adds a unique dynamic to the Early Childhood Ministry. We are grateful for each one of them!

If you have a heart to love little children and play a role in their spiritual and personal development, there is still room on our Early Childhood Team for you. Contact me if you'd like to talk more about the options available.
