The XP Report |
We started this year with three challenges from Rich, " Get Together," " Get Out" and " Get Serving!" Let me briefly touch on the final one. Jesus modeled a life of service throughout the gospels. Paul puts it very succinctly in Galatians 5:3 when he exhorts us to, Serve one another in love. But God doesn't ask us to do something unless it is ultimately good for us. A review of recent public-sector research has found a significant connection between volunteering (serving) and good health. The report shows that volunteers have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease. The report is available on the AmeriCorps Web Site. Do you want to be healthy? Where are you serving? Here are three areas to consider: 1) Somewhere in our community: There are lots of agencies in our community that may not be "Christian," but doing great work in serving others. Contact John Wood or Peggy Levesque for suggestions. 2) Serving others that you know: Do you have friends or acquaintances that could use some help on a regular basis? If so, ask them what you could do to help. 3) Serving others in our church: We have many opportunities right here at Bethany to serve others, including everything from answering phones to teaching classes. Check out our website, or call me to discuss how you may use your talents and abilities to serve in our church. So, Get Serving!
Thanks for the opportunity to serve as your Executive Pastor. It's an honor and a privilege! If you have any questions or suggestions for topics that interest you, please let me know.

Community Outreach Update |
. . .I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." ~ Matthew 25:40
Saturday, October 24 - Crisis Pregnancy Center Walk for Life
An unwanted pregnancy can literally change the course of a woman's life. Maybe she had well-laid plans for the future or has relational problems with the father of the child. Perhaps she worries about the huge responsibility or fears the financial liability. Current social mores put enormous pressure on a woman to have an abortion. "After all," she is told, "the fetus is just a blob of tissue."
The Crisis Pregnancy Center is a non-profit, volunteer Christian agency that offers truthful information explaining the risks and dispeling the myths about having an abortion. They also provide the assistance and support a woman in a crisis pregnancy needs in order to bring her baby to term. All free of charge. Read real-life testimonies of lives deeply affected by the choice they made at
http://thecrisispregnancycenterct.org (click on Testimonies). If you believe all human life is sacred, join the Walk for Life on Saturday, October 24, at Gammage Center to help save the lives of unborn children. Or, support one of the walkers with your tax-deductible donation. Harry, Erin and Skye Stanford will host a table in the courtyard with more information on October 4, 11 and 18. Or check out the azlifewalk.com website. You can reach the Stanfords at pryrwar@yahoo.com.
I-HELP
The I-HELP volunteer team has a new storage shed! The South Tempe branch of Rotary International took on the project from the planning to the build stage. The new shed is just behind Bethany's operations building. More than 15 people gave up their weekend, working under "extreme heat warning" temperatures to get the shed built. A huge sacrifice by our definition!
Now I-HELP can store some of the sleeping mats needed to host the program at Bethany, saving I-HELP personnel a van trip. How awesome is our God to pull together diverse people and organizations to further his purposes. Thanks Rotarians-you are the best!
Los Ninos de Guadalupe-Matthew 25 Sunday
Thanks to those who contributed $285 in cash and Payless ShoeSource gift cards for the September 13 Matthew 25 Sunday!
If you missed the event, it's not too late to be part of the October 10 shopping trip to provide the 50 children served by this ministry with a new pair of back-to-school shoes. Contact Cindy Paul at 480.461.4140 or copaul1@cox.net to find out how your family can get involved hands-on with leading the way as the children take new steps toward living and loving Jesus.
Along Side Ministries
Do you remember reading about Flower's prison conversion to Jesus and her mother's subsequent salvation on Easter Sunday in the August Bethany eNews? Well, here's an update. Flower's mother took four of her Wiccan friends to a tent revival meeting. Three of the ladies left saved. It's like a domino effect. Flower gets out of prison in December and plans to continue with her Along Side Ministries mentor for at least six months afterward. -Alice Garner

Volunteers in Action |
Geoff and Shannon Husa and their family are back from Papua New Guinea for a year of home ministry. To help them get settled in, the combined Husa and Tartaglia core groups worked together to organize and prepare the Bethany mission house for their arrival. They also helped stock the house through poundings, a term Kris Husa uses to describe people bringing a pound of a selected item to stock the shelves. Over 30 people came together to help out, including kids and several spouses that are not part of the core teams themselves. Project lists were distributed and everyone got to work--including the kids. Windows were cleaned (inside and out); electronic devices checked; books dusted; cushions, blinds and baseboards vacuumed; shelves repaired; artificial plants hosed off; puzzles and games cleaned and checked for missing pieces; plumbing leaks identified and fixed; and a host of other things. One woman even did a masterful job of cleaning and re-caulking the showers--a job which would have cost $250. And, the man who gave that estimate repaired the broken garage door free of charge. One woman commented that she had been prepared to spend all weekend to get the house in order, but the combined efforts of these teams accomplished all this in just a few hours. Through the serving hearts of these wonderful volunteers, a place was prepared to warmly welcome home more servants in God's Kingdom. And, through your generosity, $200 worth of gift cards will help Geoff and Shannon set up their home here in Tempe. - Karen Ulmer |
Les & Helen Hirst Give Thanks |
It has been over a year now that Helen and I have had the privilege of serving the senior community of our church family. You will never know how our hearts have been refreshed and blessed as we have shared in many of your lives and have had the opportunity to share our years in walking with the Lord.
There has been great sadness in our hearts when the Lord called some of our dear friends home, but what joy we had as we visited and talked to them about what was waiting for them as they prepared to pass into the presence of the Lord. Little did we know that we would be facing Lester's back surgery and on the receiving end of your care. We praise the Lord for sending the surgeon into our lives that recognized the problem and knew how to fix it. Lester is free from the pain in his back that had kept him from being able to move. We want to thank each and every one who lifted us up in prayer, visited in the hospital and care center, sent cards and provided support for Helen. The way back will be slow as Les goes through physical therapy. Thanks again for all the support, and please continue to hold us up before the Lord. Soon we will be back on the visitation trail and look forward to serving each of you in any way you need us. - Les (and Helen) Hirst, Senior Adult Care Pastor |
Friendship Class Backpack Project Update |
Thank you, Bethany Community Church, for supporting the Backpack Project. The Friendship Class that serves developmentally disabled adults partnered with Phoenix Rescue Mission for this project. We were able to donate 50 new backpacks filled with school supplies. We are especially grateful to classes that donated specific items. The following classes were involved: Fellowship of Light, Kingdom Garden, Pathways and World Community.
There were several highlights during this project. One was the opportunity to pass out fliers in the courtyard and to meet brothers and sisters in Christ. Secondly, it was amazing to see God work. Each week we watched as God provided the supplies needed through the members of Bethany. Thank you to the individuals that donated backpacks, Bibles, money and school supplies. God multiplied the harvest. The culmination of our labor was a tour of the Phoenix Rescue Mission. We delivered the backpacks, saw where the homeless are served and heard about other outreach programs. One class member summarized the day with the statement, "We did it!" Our sincere gratitude for allowing the Friendship Class to have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Our class meets from 9:00-10:15am on Sundays in the G conference room. We are looking for additional class members. Please come and join us!

MSM Holds Record Lock-In |
On September 11-12, a whopping 63 middle school students showed up for MSM's Fall Lock-In. Of those 63, 15 were brand new! Praise God for the great turn-out.
During the event, middle school students went on a scavenger hunt; went to Polar Ice in Chandler to ice skate and play broomball; watched movies; played wacky games; enjoyed plenty of snacks and soda, followed by a fantastic breakfast; and played at Kiwanis Park in the morning before being picked up. The students also heard a powerful message about how Jesus Christ breaks the chains that bind us in our lives. I am so proud of our students for reaching out to their friends and showing the love of Jesus to others. For those who like to look ahead, our next Lock-In is planned for January 1 and 2--right at the end of Christmas break. Pencil it in so that you don't miss out. - Josh Harper, Middle School Pastor
