Ministry in Motion: The Work of God Viewed through a Stephen Minister's Heart |

I began meeting once a week with a dear lady in June of last year. She came to our first meeting with many things on her heart. Her husband had been out of work for months and wasn't, in her opinion, motivated to find another job. On top of the financial burdens, her grown daughter and three small children had no place to go and ended up moving in with her, her husband and 13 year old son in their two bedroom apartment. Needless to say, she was exhausted from working overtime at her job, running a household, and helping her son and grandchildren with their homework. For the first several visits I just listened and let her vent. She truly had so many things to vent about and just needed someone to listen, understand and love her. Before each visit, I prayed fervently for wisdom and guidance from the Lord. I asked him to put HIS words in my mouth that would encourage and offer suggestions specific to her situation. The beauty of being a Stephen Minister is to walk along side someone going through a difficult time, allowing God to use us for His glory. We don't have the answers, but Jesus does! As our visits progressed, we could both see and feel the Lord's touch in her situation. She was able to get some solid financial advice to help her with her finances. Her husband landed a job and was getting a steady paycheck, and her daughter moved out and was able to get a job and an apartment. Best of all, they were finally able to move to a nearby suburb to be near their friends. As always, we have an awesome God! Because she was faithful and surrendered everything to Him, she was rewarded with many wonderful blessings. I know that I was so blessed to see her faith in action as she kept her focus on Jesus and looked to Him for the answers. It's always exciting to see how our wonderful Lord works things out. That's why I love Stephen Ministry. It is a wonderful ministry that allows God to use us to care and love ordinary people as He works out the difficulties that, at many times, hit us hard. I would encourage anyone going through a difficult time and in need of someone to walk with them and pray with them, to call Linda Whipple. That's what Stephen Ministries is all about--we care about YOU! - A Volunteer Stephen Minister Stephen Ministries - Let us help you!

Bethany Short Term Mission Trips |
Quiz: During the past year, Bethany people have gone on short term mission trips to how many countries? a. 3 b. 5 c. 6 d. More than 7 The answer is, "d. More than seven." Maybe the question confused you. Bethany sent out teams to the six countries of Indonesia, Kosovo, Mexico, Peru, Russia, and South Africa. But in addition, there were others from Bethany who went on their own to serve Jesus Christ among the nations, proclaiming his good news through word and deed. Our heartfelt thanks go to Dan Nisly and Irene Clark (Kenya), Shawna Gorman (Ethiopia), John and Cindy Gillan (Albania and Cameroon), and Paul and Dora Sinclair (Mexico), among others.
Dr. John Gillan is one of those from Bethany who uses his skills as an endodontist to serve. His service caught the eye of the editor of Inscriptions, the journal of the Arizona Dental Association, who featured him in the June/July 2008 edition. The article focuses mainly on Dr. Gillan's ongoing relationship with the dental community in Albania. The following paragraph demonstrates the depth of that relationship: "During one of his most recent visits, Dr. Gillan was enjoying a casual lunch with Dr. Budina and others from the Albanian dental team. When the topic turned to weather, Dr. Budina exclaimed: 'Summers are very hot. In September, it begins to cool down. But October is our favorite . . . the most fun . . . it's the month of John (Gillan)!'" We join our voices in saying: "It's our favorite month, too. It's the month of Dan, of Irene, of Shawna, of Paul and Dora, of John and Cindy." Thanks to all of you for your service to the nations in Jesus' name.

Blood Drive Did you know . . . ?
EVERY TWO SECONDS someone in the United States needs blood. But, only five percent of the eligible US population donates blood in any given year. There is no substitute. Healthy donors are the only source of blood. On Sunday, October 12 from 8:30am to 12:45pm the Red Cross will have a mobile blood bus parked in the north parking lot at Bethany. Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live, and the need is even greater in the wake of Hurricane Ike. For nearly five million people who receive blood transfusions every year, your donation can make the difference between life and death. Go to www.givelife.org to find a wealth of valuable information provided by the Red Cross on donating blood. Take a minute right now to sign up. Enter sponsor code: bethanycc and schedule an appointment between 8:30am and 12:45pm, or stop by the table in the courtyard on Sundays. Together we can save a life. Early Childhood Ministries |
This is an exciting time to be part of the Early Childhood ministry here at Bethany Community Church. We have been growing by leaps and bounds and have seen more and more new and returning families every Sunday! I am so thrilled about the great teams that are forming at all of our mid-week programs. We are aiming to build strong, solid teams that will teach your children about the love of God--not just babysit! There are many opportunities to participate. You can try it out and if it's not a fit we can direct you to other volunteer opportunities that would better fit your gifts. Along with exciting growth, comes change: new volunteers, new faces and a learning curve. Thank you for your continued support as we work through this growth. If you would like to talk about any of these changes, please know that my door is always open. I welcome any ideas or suggestions that you, as parents, might have.
