A Moment With Matt |
I'd like to tell you a story of a young boy who got invited to a birthday party. His parents dropped him off at the party to enjoy the games and fun at his best friend's celebration. A few hours later, the parents returned to pick up the boy. He sat in the backseat wearing a bit of a frown and the parents asked him what he was sad about. The boy replied, "The party was fun but I didn't get any presents." What a great illustration of how we often view our worship gatherings.
You see, the goal of our Sunday morning gathering together is to glorify God. Our time together is for Him, and Him alone. We glorify and praise Him because He is praise-worthy...worthy of our praise. One of the ways we glorify God is by coming to experience and be with Him. By coming to Him and seeking Him, we are declaring that He is the source of our joy and peace and strength; by gathering in His name, we declare that He alone is our God and worthy of our praise. One of the great things I've learned from author John Piper is that God is blessed as we find our satisfaction in Him. God delights in being our supreme joy, peace, or ________. God is blessed as we seek Him above any other thing. God wants us to be totally satisfied in Him. Just like I want my wife to be satisfied with me as her husband, how much more does God want to be the one to fulfill our hearts' longings. So Sunday morning, we gather for Him. There is a great danger, especially in churches, to buy into the world's lie of consumerism, that finding more and more things that please us and make us happy (that aren't God) will satisfy. And many have bought into it, moving from church to church, looking for programs and music style that please us. The fact of the matter is, there is only one person who is able to say "What a great time of worship" and that is Christ himself.
We gather together to hear from Him...to experience Him in prayer, in the songs we sing, and as we hear from His Word. This is why the preparation of our hearts is so important. We must be ready to enter into the moment, to be present. I know how easy it is to be physically present, but to have my heart and mind somewhere else. In order for us to be at a place where we can hear from God, our hearts must first be prepared.
The other thing we do Sunday morning is to respond to Him. As we hear from God and experience His presence, we are touched in unique ways by the Word and we respond. This is why we have a time for response at the end of the service. A time to respond in singing, prayer, in giving our gifts, and in remembering the great love of God by taking communion. And not all of our responding will be the same week to week. There is freedom to respond to how God speaks every time. The form or shape our responding takes is not as important as the fact that we do respond. While the methods or forms change, the underlying values are the same. That is why there is such a diversity in the music we sing. We sing modern songs of praise, ancient / traditional hymns, as well as traditional hymns done in a modern style. The hymns keep us grounded in our history and tradition. They are theologically rich and the music represents a time from the church's life. The modern songs are quite different musically. There is often a criticism of the "me" centered praise songs...we don't do them. We try very hard to find music that is focused and centered on Christ. And the hymns we've done in a more modern musical setting are culturally mobile, but still grounded in the original text.
So while the methods may change, the message is the same. God loves us and sent His Son to live among us, living the perfect life, a life we could never live. He then died in our place on the cross, paying the penalty for sin, a death we should have died. He then rose from the grave, conquering satan, sin, and death; and he now sits at the right hand of the Father, as King and Lord over all. Because of His life, death, and resurrection, we are welcomed into His kingdom. We have much to respond to with praise as we look upon the person and work of our Savior, Jesus Christ. -Matthew Vlahovich

Stand Up & Shout - He's My Hero! |
Singing & dancing, shouting & laughing...part of creative learning on Sunday mornings for Kindergarten through 3rd grade age children during 1st service. Each week we have a full interactive hour of worship, prayer, offering and biblical teaching. Sunday morning is about taking God's truth and learning to apply that truth to our daily lives. We have learned virtue lessons about joy, humility, self-control and honor. By using PowerPoint & Google art, children have learned to be patientlike Joseph. Using skits children have learned self-control is always a wise choice. We have dined with Jesus, learned how to put others before ourselves and most important of all...that Jesus loves us all. Each week the children pray together. Children are never hesitant in asking for prayer and together, we take our prayer requests to God. We pray for annoying younger siblings, scrapped knees and lots of sick animals. We also pray for grandparents, broken cars and jobs for Mom and Dad. As part of our worship we receive an offering to support a young boy through Compassion International. We also pray for our sponsored child and his family. Children celebrate that Jesus loves us and that we love Him. Jesus is their hero and for that reason they stand up and shout! If you would like to join this team of adults that worship, pray and study the Bible with kids contact me at darmer1@cox.net. -Debbie Armer |

Community Outreach |
Matthew 25 Sunday: September 14 Neighborhood Ministries This year the nationally renowned Neighborhood Ministries celebrated its 25th anniversary of "being the presence of Jesus Christ to distressed families of inner city Phoenix through holistic ministry". Currently Neighborhood Ministries serves 500-600 families. Interwoven into their program philosophy they offer opportunities for promoting personal responsibility by recruiting adult volunteers from among those served.
This parent volunteer program is unique in many ways. One of the most successful components has been their Christmas Store. Approximately 125 parents volunteer in one or more of each area of ministry at Neighborhood Ministries (NM): assisting in the Head Start program, volunteering in the medical and dental clinic, maintaining the buildings, providing childcare for each other, working in the food and clothing banks, tutoring school-age children, working in the Barrio Bike Shop, and general upkeep of NM's eight-acre campus. For their efforts NM "pays" them $7 an hour in "Christmas Bucks". This year on December 7, these folks will bring their "Christmas Bucks" to the store to buy brand-new gifts for their families. Since these wonderful people hardly ever get anything new, this store has added dignity to a season that can be very humiliating for parents. Please help NM stock their Christmas Store by donating one or more of the gift suggestions below. Bethany folks will have an opportunity to contribute items for one of the favorite gifts the parent volunteers can purchase with their Christmas Bucks. If you would like to contribute one or items from this list, bring them on Sunday, September 14. Babies & infants: no tear shampoo, detangle spray, comb, brush, children's toothpaste/toothbrush, band aids, lotion, diaper rash ointment, q-tips, Sippee cups, pacifier, disposable diapers, wipes, etc. Young girl: Brush, comb, hair accessories, purse, Hannah Montana stuff, hair bands, jewelry, barrettes Young boy: Lego set, bike lock, markers, anything Spiderman, anything Sponge Bob, comics, CD's Teen girl: hair straightener, shampoo, conditioner, gel, perfume, hair spray, lotion, nail polish, file, small purse, dryer, curling iron, claw clips Teen boy: Axe products, bike lock, cologne, calculator, gum, headphones, Jack-in-the-Box gift card Mom: lotion, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, nail polish, file, hair dryer, perfume, plastic hangers, alarm clock , makeup Dad: car wash supplies, cologne, deodorant, after shave, disposable razors, comb, chamois, warm socks, work gloves Stop by the table on Sunday, September 14 to find out how you can get personally involved in this ministry. For more information contact Robyn Dahl at rdahl@bethanycc.com or Peggy Levesque at plevesque@bethanycc.com. Save the Date - Save a Life Matthew 25 Sunday: October 12
Mark your calendar and prepare to serve by giving blood. The blood drive will be held at Bethany from 8:30am-1pm If you donate blood regularly, remember the 56-day limit. More information will be available at www.bethanycommunity.com soon.
Habitat Update
We've all heard that "the wheels of progress move slowly". That's just as true with the Habitat for Humanity house Bethany is partially funding with our 2008 Easter offering. However, Habitat is in the process of concluding a land deal in Chandler and one of those lots will be ours. By the next eNews publication we should be able to tell you where, when (probably a January start date), and something about the family. Celebrate With Us! International Friends So far 11 families have signed up for the International Friends program to become an influence in the life of an international ASU student. If you would like to get involved contact Sebastian Albert at sebas.albert@gmail.com.
Sit with the People The hand of the Lord was strong upon me. I came to them and I sat where they sat (Ezekiel 3:14-15 KJV). In one of her daily devotionals, Kay Arthur, Bible teacher and author, wrote, "Looking at the spinning globe of this world doesn't do a great deal to provoke my interest. It's all too big, too massive, too far beyond my comprehension and experience. Introduce me to the people of a country. Tell me how they live, where they hurt, and what their dreams are. People respond to people. I am convinced that until we really see the world as people, we will never really have a true burden to pray." We could read that last sentence as, "I am convinced that until we see our local community as individuals, we will never have a true burden to reach out in a meaningful way." God commissioned Ezekiel to go to the children of Israel, a nation that had rebelled against God. But before Ezekiel could address their deepest needs, he had to sit where the people sat. Only after we peek out from behind our own covers of busyness into the core of a person in need, hear their story, do we begin to connect with the individual and recognize that inner part created so much like you or me. Maybe we have to look deep, past a host of wrong choices or a foundation of generational poverty that has ill-prepared them to successfully navigate a society operating on rules different from what their own experiences have taught them. But look we must if, as emissaries of Jesus, we are ever to see them, love them, and serve them. And that takes some level of time and commitment. Jesus didn't count the cost when he put aside His Godhood and took human form to redeem and serve us-in spite of our separation from Him. Realistically, most of us are not in a position to set aside the business of earning a living, raising families, and myriad other vital responsibilities. However, each one of us can do something. If you haven't already taken the plunge, begin today to listen to God's still small voice. We urge you to wade in. You just might make a connection that will change someone's life. On Saturday, October 18, 2-5pm, Bethany is sending a team into a forgotten and neglected community right in our own back yard to "sit with" the children. Do you have a heart for putting a smile on a child's face? Join us as we reach out as the hands of Jesus. Contact Peggy Levesque at plevesque@bethanycc.com.
