A Word from Rich
Talking about Money
US QuarterI'm no economist, and I don't claim to understand the financial cycles that seem to happen in our economy, but I do know that we have been here before. Whether this is a recession or not, many people have felt the crunch of a difficult time economically these past months and the possibility is pretty great that we haven't hit bottom yet. The housing bubble in Arizona burst and many people owe more on their homes than they are currently worth. Some people managed to get qualified for mortgages way beyond what they could actually afford, and are facing the reality of an upside down family budget each month.

And then there are gas prices. You'll excuse my cynicism, but doesn't it seem that in the run up to our presidential elections there is almost always some economic crisis-real or manufactured? I have no idea why the price of crude oil has risen so fast in the past few months, but I do know that Jennifer and I are carpooling more often, and cutting out unnecessary trips and trying like crazy to go to the gas station less often. Last week it took $98.72 to fill up my truck! Ouch!

Food prices are also up. And food packages are shrinking so we won't notice that we are paying more for less. Truth is, most of us can stand to eat less-and better-food anyway.

More than a few local businesses and large international employers in the Valley are talking about the next round of reductions in force. Layoffs are coming. Downsizing is happening. Everywhere.

Along Side Ministries
Wow! In addition to nearly a dozen complete grace bags, the people of Bethany filled to overflowing six bins with hygiene products for ex-offenders being released from prison. We'll let you know when we have the numbers of complete bags compiled with your donations. In the meantime, THANK YOU. We are so very proud to serve our Redeemer King alongside you.
For more information on this ministry contact Bob Corelli at [email protected].

Tina Anthony Makes National History
Tina AnthonyOn May 19, the San Tan Mountain Black Sheep chapter elected their new president. Their choice was Bethany's own Tina Anthony. Since the conception of Black Sheep, this is only the second time there has ever been a woman to hold the position of Chapter President. Nationally, there are 90 different Black Sheep clusters; 47 of them are what they call "full blown chapters." Out of all of those areas, only Debbie Sullivan of Hemet, California shares her gender. Why is this significant? There is a subculture within motorcycling that is predominantly controlled by males. Even in the year 2008, women can be treated like property. It is not uncommon to see patches worn by wives and girlfriends that say "property of" on their backs.

The women of Black Sheep are a special breed. They stand out in a tough biker world and their presence is one of strength in Christ. They are able to lend support to others and sense the needs of the hurting. With or without titles, the female members are a very special and necessary ingredient in the Black Sheep recipe. Congratulations Tina!!

A New Approach
It's all about relationship. That's true in Christian witness, sales, customer service...you name it, and the outcome is multiplied by a foundation of trust and credibility.

Over the past year, Community Outreach Ministries has encouraged the people of Bethany to look beyond the church walls for a place to be Jesus to hurting people and you have responded. On Matthew 25 Sundays you have addressed physical needs through ministries such as Pappas School, The Salvation Army, Los Ninos, Angel Tree, ThriftSmart, and Along Side Ministries. Many of you teamed up to prepare and serve meals to the homeless through I-HELP or other programs. Through your generosity, MentorKids sent a group of mentees and mentors on a mission trip to Mexico and Hope Community Health Center has new equipment that allows expanded services. These are incredible examples of how Jesus wants us to respond to the needs in our community.

Recent research indicates that doing "for", while critical for meeting immediate needs, does not necessarily lead to permanent improvement in the receiver's situation. In fact, it can sometimes be more harmful than helpful by reinforcing an entitlement mentality. An approach that identifies the assets and resources a disadvantaged individual or community has on hand to build upon has been successively used worldwide. This method offers support, education, and relationships that encourage those interested to progress into a more spiritual, stable, and positive lifestyle.

Already many of you have engaged in some form of this doing "with" approach. You have funded one half of a Habitat house, eager to work right alongside the homeowner, developing a relationship in the process. Those involved in mentoring men, women or children in any way provide encouragement and behavior modeling that can lead to more productive and fulfilling lives.

Under the umbrella of Center Life, Bethany is working with a coalition of churches and parachurch organizations-Food for the Hungry, LifeWay International, and First Pentecostal Church among others-to plan opportunities for helping to reach into an entire community less than ten miles away-one relationship at a time-with the love of Christ. Over the summer Bethany's Community Outreach Ministries will introduce these opportunities to you. Jesus said to his disciples (including you and me), "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14). How cool would it be to shine that light, transforming lives in every meaningful way, until that community can shine out to the city around it? Stay tuned for more information.

Pick up a ministry list in the Information Center or check out the Community Outreach Web page for information on community ministries in which the people of Bethany are already engaged. If you are looking for suggestions on matching your passion with a service opportunity, please contact Bethany's Community Outreach Ministries Director, Peggy Levesque at [email protected].
International Outreach
Au Revoir, Chesley Family
What a joy to have the Chesley family with us this last school year as they were on home assignment from their ministry in Chad, Central Africa. Bill and Rachel have contributed so much as they have shared about their ministry, sung in the choir, and participated in Bible studies. Emily, Lydia, and David have made many friends through their involvement in HSM and MSM. They are all going to be missed.

Chesley'sUpon returning to Africa, the three younger Chesleys will enroll for the first time in Rain Forest Academy, a boarding school for internationals in Yaounde, Cameroon. Bill and Rachel will also be at Rain Forest, at least for the first semester, as they serve as house parents for some of the students.

Meanwhile, they will continue their ministry of translating God's Word into the Migaama language of central Chad. God go with you, dear friends. Our prayers accompany you.

MSM to Prescott Pines This Week

BlackSheep

Please pray for Bethany's middle school group as they go to Prescott Pines camp June 2-6.  Please pray that students would be open to God's calling in their lives. Our prayer is not only that students would have a blast, but that each one would fall more in love with our Savior than before. Prayers for safety and a well-run camp are also much appreciated.

8th Grade Celebration
Last month, MSM celebrated their 8th grade students with a fantastic event in the MSM room. Families of 8th graders and middle school students worshiped, enjoyed cake, laughed about good memories, heard praise for each student, and watched an emotional slide show. MSM is so proud of all the 8th graders. Congratulations; we will miss you all so much!!

Showers of Blessings
Bethany Community Church recently joined in partnership with Showers of Blessing Church, a Korean fellowship of approximately 50 members, by providing them space to meet on our campus. They come together for worship on Sundays at 11am in E6, conduct their youth program in F201, and use the kitchen to prepare a post fellowship meal together. In addition, they meet for a time of prayer on Saturdays at 6:30am. I would encourage you to greet them in the Lord as they use our campus until they are able to find a home of their own. If you feel comfortable, you could say "Ah nyohng ah say o" ("hello" in Korean) with a slight bow of your head to the older folks.

PrimeLife Retreat at Bison Ranch: Tues-Thurs, August 19-21

At this year's retreat, Richard Hendrix will lead you on a journey with the Great Shepard through Pslam 23. Perhaps one of the most beautiful and descriptive poems ever written, the 23rd Psalm is a step-by-step introduction to the Savior who loves you and provides everything we need. This walk with the Shepherd will help you find contentment in an age of dissatisfaction, trust at a time of doubt, rest in a world that is hectic and renewal when you are depleted. None of this comes from a formula or even a course of study, but from a day-by-day walk with the Shepherd. Enjoy a few days of deepening your experience with the Shepherd who loves you and wants to lead you every step of the way.

Cost is $175 double occupancy includes all meals. Sign up at the PrimeLife table, in your Faith Community or contact Del Tipton 480.893.1702 or [email protected] or Mary Beth Cochran 480.831.5005 or [email protected]

Fill the Bare Cupboards
Sponsored by Bethany's Friendship Faith Community
Summer is a particularly difficult time for Valley food banks, but this year the need has struck even earlier, leaving many food pantries in critically short supply and unable to meet the needs of those in our community who must often choose between gas and food. Also in the summer many families who normally take advantage of school lunch programs rely on local food banks to help fill the nutrition gap for their children.

Next Sunday help restock the pantry shelves at United Food Bank by bringing one or more items of non-perishable food to church.

United Food Bank offers food box programs to aid people in getting more food for their money or to provide food for those without monetary resources. The food bank also provides food for their Kid's Caf programs, homeless shelters, rehab centers, soup kitchens, domestic violence shelters, senior centers, and church pantries. Visit www.unitedfoodbank.org for more information

Book Exchange
BooksStop by the Women's Ministry Table on Sunday mornings to check out our inventory of used books!

In May, Women's Ministry established a book exchange for women and men alike to trade in books they have already read for different titles others have donated. It is an honor system. If you take a book, you may keep it as long you it takes you to read...just remember to return it to the table once you have finished so others can enjoy it, too.

Additional donations are welcome, so please drop off those good Christian fiction or non-fiction books that you'd recommend to others and while you're there, feel free to browse for a new book to read!
Nursery News
Nursery FishThe Early Childhood Ministry gives heartfelt thanks to the Renewal Faith Community for generously providing funds for the latest room mural! Sunny Skies, our infant nursery, is now a breathtakingly beautiful environment for Bethany's littlest ones. Babies that are nurtured and introduced to Jesus through our Baby Church program are now surrounded by clouds, birds, and even some hot air balloons in the distance. Everyone is invited to walk in and take a look at this wonderful work by Ray of Light Art. This same artistic team brought to life our Peaceful Pond nursery for toddlers last year. If you've never seen our Peaceful Pond, please stop in Nursery Skiesand take a peek in there as well! The A Building is directly across the courtyard from the Worship Center, and these nurseries are in A4 and A8.

For anyone who would love to serve children in either of these wonderful nurseries, volunteer applications are available in A6. We look forward to seeing you!
