Apply To Participate
In Passport Program

Applications and nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Passport Program. The DED Travel & Tourism Division is expanding the program next year to include 72 stops featured within nine categories: wineries, golf, festivals, culture/history, water recreation/adventure, parks, unique accommodations, family fun and culinary.

For those unfamiliar with the Passport program, travelers are encouraged to visit attractions statewide, collect stamps at designated stops and earn prizes in the process.

In a follow-up survey, 94 percent of previous participants said they visited at least one Nebraska attraction they wouldn't have otherwise visited because it was a Passport stop. In addition, 71 percent of respondents said they spent at least three nights away from home while visiting Passport sites.

To be considered as a featured destination in the 2012 Nebraska Passport Program, please request an application and email it to Public Relations Coordinator Shannon Peterson at shannon.j.peterson@nebraska.gov by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan 13.

You may also nominate an attraction for the program. Send the name of the nominee, a contact person and a brief explanation of why the business should be selected to shannon.j.peterson@nebraska.gov.

All applicants will be notified as to whether or not they are selected by Jan. 30. By submitting an application you agree to:

* Be open regular and reasonable hours, including at least one weekend day.

* Staff your attraction with a friendly person who can stamp passports during listed business hours and share information about things to do in your area.

* Positively promote the program by displaying materials, such as posters and passports at your attraction.

* Pay a $100 participation fee if selected as a featured attraction.

* Abide by Nebraska state law that prohibits charging participants for stamps.

If you have questions about the program, please contact Shannon Peterson at 402-471-3797 or shannon.j.peterson@nebraska.gov.

Mary Kersenbrock

Kersenbrock is a familiar name in the O'Neill area. Mary is the 4th generation in the O'Neill area. Kersenbrock is also a familiar name in dentistry. Mary's dad, M.J. has been in practice in O'Neill since 1982. M.J.'s sister, Nan, and her husband are dentists in Omaha. Nan's two sons are Peridontists.   Of M.J.'s 4 children, 3 of them are in or are considering a dentistry related field.

Mary graduated in 2002 from St. Mary's High School. Upon leaving high school, she didn't know she would be a dentist, but knew she wanted to return to the area. Her goal was a career in health care. Realizing she didn't want to take call, she chose a familiar profession in dentistry. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University where she received her bachelor's degree in biology. From there, she attended Creighton University School of Dentistry. She returned to O'Neill in May, 2010. Together, M.J. and Mary opened Kersenbrock Dental Care PC.

Mary has always loved living in O'Neill. Admittedly a candy fanatic, a fond childhood memory is the St. Patrick's Day parade and 4th of July festivities with family. She thinks safety, trust, community, and caring people make this town a great location to stay and do business. She is committed to the community and St. Mary's High School. She has already taken on many coaching positions including 5th/6th grade basketball, high school track, and assistant girls' varsity basketball. She is thankful that the dentistry lifestyle allows her to be involved in coaching because it is a big part of her life.

HCED'S Annual Dinner To Be Held January 15th

Holt County Economic Development will be hosting their fourth annual dinner on Sunday, January 15th at the O'Neill Community Center. Keynote speaker will be Aaron Davis.

Davis, is a noted authority on peak performance and championship teamwork. He's also the author of the inspiring book "10 Minute Truths" and the co-author of two others.

While in college at the University of Nebraska, Aaron had the good fortune of being a member of the 1994 National Championship football team. Aaron is quick to remind audiences that the awards and accolades they receive are all fantastic, but true success and excellence first begins with those you care and love the most.

Other highlights of the program will include the HomeTown Leadership Institute Class VII graduation, newcomer and alumni introduction, video contest winners and business developments.

Doors will open at 5 PM with dinner to be served at 6 PM. Tickets are $16 per person and must be purchased in advance. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Holt County Economic Development Office at 336-1504 or emailing info@holtcountynebraska.com.
