Greetings From Durango! 

 

 

 Afternoon clouds move into Durango like clockwork, the Animas River is running around 300 cfs (that's pretty low), and Fort Lewis College is bustling as we prepare for a new crop of students. Ready or not, August is upon us and the end of summer is near!

 

This year, August brings with it some additional excitement in the form of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. This is an international stage race that attracts the top professional cyclists in the world, and in its second year, it all starts in Durango!

No group has been hit harder by the current economic squeeze than college-bound students in need of financial aid. Student loan programs have been sharply curtailed or eliminated, many parents are out of work, and part-time jobs normally available to college students are in short supply. At a time when much of the burden for funding academic scholarships and student stipends has shifted to alumni-funded programs, many of those being asked to give are facing financial challenges as well.
