Trade Secrets from the Professional Packers

at Ayer Moving & Storage ...

Let's be candid ... one of the major advantages of hiring a professional moving company to handle a move is the assurance that household belongings will safely arrive at the new home.  Trained packing crews stand behind every box, crate, and item they pack, load, and ship ... and they are responsible.

Packing household goods can be tedious and time-consuming.  But ... we do understand the need to look for savings.  At Ayer Moving & Storage, we recommend that you urge your clients to get a moving estimate with AND without professional packing.  Be sure they add in their time and effort and the cost of the additional insurance coverage they will need. Only then will they be able to make the best decision.

If they decide to do their own packing, you can pass along these professional Trade Secrets to help them in that effort:

Trade Secret #1

Purchase cartons and packing materials specifically manufactured to withstand the rigors of moving.  You'll save valuable time compared to trying to track down appropriate boxes from supermarkets.

Trade Secret #2

Wrap fragile articles the way professionals do - use two layers of unprinted newsprint per glass, dish, or figurine.  Wrap firmly, but loosely enough to provide a cushioning effect.

Trade Secret #3

Don't overcrowd boxes.  The top of the box should close with slight pressure.  Pack clothing in special wardrobe containers.  Without overcrowding, clothes will hang straight and stay clean and virtually wrinkle-free.

Trade Secret #4

Pack glasses standing on end, upside down, and not on their sides.  Stack dishes on end and fill empty spaces with wadded unprinted newsprint.

Trade Secret #5

Pack lampshades, mirrors, pictures, and artwork in special cartons designed for them.

Trade Secret #6

Tape boxes across tops and edges.  Seal every opening tightly.

Trade Secret #7

Pack your belongings room by room to make unpacking easier.  Label each box with your name, contract number, the room the box goes to, and a brief description of the contents.

Trade Secret #8

Don't pack paints, turpentine, pressurized cans, or corrosive items like bleach or any flammable liquid.

Trade Secret #9

When packing a personal computer, use the manufacturer's original carton, if possible, along with the packing materials.  Be sure to back up your software and data files and park the hard drive.  Read our Trade Secrets brochure for more information.

Trade Secret #10

Give extra consideration to especially fragile items that will benefit from professional packers using specially-designed packing cartons and materials, like marble or glass tabletops, mirrors, antiques, appliances, and chandeliers.

Some things should stay with you as you move, such as jewelry, furs, photographs, and coin or stamp collections.
