What's Going On
Our Current Sermon Series
CompassAt our Celebration Services on Sunday mornings, we'll be going through the Book of Luke for the next few months!   Here are some interesting facts:  The Gospel of Luke was written more than after 30 years after Jesus was on earth, Luke was not one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, and he was a doctor!  Luke also wrote the book of Acts. This weekend:
The Heart of Mary, Pastor Scott Taube.

Women's Christmas Tea
Tea CookiesThe Women's Tea is this Thursday, Dec. 2, at 6:30.  A dessert buffet will be provided.  Tickets are available after both services at the Women's Ministry Kiosk.  There is no charge, however we are asking that you sign up with how many friends will be with you so we know how many to plan for. Childcare is provided!

Christmas Angel
Thank you to everyone who choose a child to
provide a gift for this Christmas. As a reminder, please return your gifts by Sunday, December 5th. Please wrap and label them and place them under the tree.

EP's Sean Flathers Presents His Book,  "'Twas a Shepherd's First Christmas" at Borders
Book
Cape Elizabeth. Local author Sean Flathers will present his brand new book 'Twas a Shepherd's First Christmas on Saturday December 4 at 11:00 a.m. and Borders Bookstore in South Portland.

"'Twas the night before Christmas, but I did not know, on the eve of a birth, long, long ago"

So begins Flathers' beautifully illustrated tale of the true meaning of Christmas - the accurate story of the birth of Christ. Flathers, of Cape Elizabeth, originally wrote 'Twas a Shepherd's First Christmas in 1993 as a poem for his young children.

"I wanted my children to have a story of the birth of Christ, presented accurately and in a way they could understand and appreciate," Flathers said.

'Twas a Shepherd's First Christmas tells the familiar tale through the eyes of a lowly shepherd and is written to the same cadence as Clement Moore's beloved poem The Night Before Christmas. Flathers' own special Christmas poem has always held a special place in his family's Christmas Eve tradition and, after much encouragement to publish it as an illustrated children's book, Flathers has done just that.

"Our Christmas Eve tradition has also included a reading of Moore's classic, and our children would always "ooh" and "ahh" at the beautiful illustrations. It was important to me that the illustrations for my book capture a child's imagination the same way." When choosing an illustrator, Flathers went with his first instinct and contacted Rose Kennealy, a local artist whose work his family has always admired. Her beautiful watercolor depictions do not disappoint. Says Kennealy, "When Sean brought me his story, some of the images sprang fully formed into my mind's eye, and I enjoyed the creative freedom he gave me."

Flathers, a corporate nine-to-fiver, found the creative process of working with Kennealy and the publisher, Thorncrown Publishing, to be a welcome diversion from his day job. " I've never done anything like this. To have talented people like Rose collaborating with me to make my book a reality was very energizing."

'Twas a Shepherd's First Christmas can be found on Amazon.com and at local bookstores. Please join Flathers for a special holiday story time and book signing at Borders Bookstore in South Portland on Saturday December 4 at 11:00 a.m. For more information: sflathers@maine.rr.com.
Spotlight On: Scott Furr

FurrsWhat is your role at EastPoint?
I have been a part of the church family for over three years. Been a small group leader, D-group leader, and recently coordinated the relocation project to the new building.
Why do you serve?
God is continually changing my heart and giving me a greater desire to build His kingdom here on earth.
Where do you and your family live?
We live in Scarborough in the Pleasant Hill area. My wife Anna and I are blessed with three wonderful children: Ethan (7), Sebastian (5), and Cora (1).
Where are you originally from?
I am from the other Portland, the one in Oregon.
What is your educational background?
I graduated from the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in 2000, with a B.S in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
What is your career background?
I went to work as a naval architect for seven years, designing commercial ships. I then went into early retirement to become a stay at home dad and have never regretted it since! My wife is a physician and having me at home with the kids brings some balance to our lives.
What are your hobbies?
Pursuing God is my new favorite thing to do. But I am also a serious windsurfing junkie, surfer, sailor and all around waterman. I also enjoy skiing, backpacking and woodworking. And also mountain biking, rollerblading, and did I mention I sell Legos out of my basement! (I think I need to cut back on some of these hobbies)
What is your favorite Scripture?
Matthew 22:37-39: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."   and....  John 15:5: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
