Greetings!

The holidays are fast upon us! Are you ready? I'm not sure I am, either!
Chefs
Are these your elves?

Papershell will be closed for the holiday break, starting around 2:00pm on Saturday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) and continuing through Monday, January 2. We'll reopen at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2012! We're excited about the new year, and can hardly imagine what it will bring. I for sure did not foresee a record-breaking freeze last February, nor an extended drought through the summer. If I could ask Santa for a drought-busting rainy spring, that's what I'd get. I am hopeful, though, that these last few weeks, with at least a little rain, is helping to recharge the soil moisture. With any luck, we'll get a little bit of tropical  moisture in the summer and it won't be as bad in 2012 as it was in 2011.

Downy Woodpecker
I will visit your garden!

We're planning for a good year, though. We're potting up fruit trees now for sale in the spring, and scheduling interesting speakers and classes for almost every weekend. Some of your old favorites will be back as well as some new topics - I know you'll enjoy them.
Baby Peach
Get ready for fruit trees!

While we're closed, I'll be checking email from time to time and posting on Facebook. I'll try to keep you updated about frosts and freezes. You never know!

If I don't see you before we close for the year, please have a safe and happy holiday!  It's been such a pleasure working with all of you!

Thanks for signing up for our email newsletter!  Come see us soon!

Tabletop Sale!

Kristy and I are anxious to find all our little plants a good home before the holiday break, so we're having a tabletop sale! Until we close on Christmas Eve, every plant on a table or a bench is 30% off! This includes flowers, veggies, herbs, cyclamen, potted bulbs, and just about everything else small enough to sit on a table!

Tables
Cheerful winter color!

We are fully stocked with beautiful color that will last through the winter and on into spring. You can plant pansies, violas, snapdragons, delphiniums, wallflowers, calendulas, alyssum, lobelia and dianthus now and enjoy color throughout the season.

Hurry in soon -- they won't last long!

Handmade for the Holidays

Or homegrown! Need a few last-minute gifts for gardeners? Or anyone else who appreciates thoughtful, unique gifts? We've got an eclectic selection of items in the garden center and the gallery that sure to please someone on your list.
Amaryllis 'Flamenco Queen'
Flamenco Queen!
My favorite thing in the gallery today is this exquisite amaryllis called 'Flamenco Queen.' The rich burgundy-red is set off so beautifully by the pale green throat of the bloom. We have it in full bloom, but also just budded -- it'll liven up anyone's dining room table or kitchen window!

Ornaments
Barbara's Ornaments
We also just got the cutest little glazed terracotta ornaments, perfect for the Texas-themed tree or for an artsy little gift topper. They're handmade by Barbara Nilsson of New Ulm and come with a handcrafted paper and leather wrapper.

Silk Scarves
Michael Vollmer's Scarves

Michael Vollmer has painted some lovely silk scarves with rich watercolor. They're lightweight enough for our subtropical climate and colors sing of the garden.
Jo Edwards
This painting is on sale!

And we're excited to tell you that Jo Edwards has brought several of her works to sell in the gallery. Her minis make wonderful gifts at $25 each or 3 for $60 but she's also brought a selection of larger works that are half-price.

If you really simply cannot decide, we also offer gift cards. You can even call us on the phone and we'll send one in a nice card to your favorite gardener!

Papershell. Original art for original people.
And flowers too!

2012 Events and Classes

We're excited to announce that we'll be participating in the Farmer's Market at Imperial Sugar Land, beginning Saturday January 7!  We'll feature the work of our talented artists and craftspeople and we're also thrilled to be able to offer fresh farm produce from All We Need Farms in Needville and Sullivan's Happy Heart Family Farm in Damon! It's hard for farmers to take a day out of the week and man a booth at a market, so our partnership is a win-win for everyone. You get to select market-fresh produce at the Papershell booth while perusing the latest in original artwork from the gallery! Look for us there - here's a map.

 Farmer's Market

We also have no fewer than 50 classes planned for 2012 and more to come! I'm pretty confident that the January calendar is set -- look for Diana Liga to return on January 29 to teach about temperate fruit trees (that's peaches, pears, apples and that sort of thing). I'll teach two classes, one in Backyard Birding on January 15 and one for beginning gardeners on January 22. And Lisa Bonin's Fused Glass class is back on January 28! As ever, space in our lovely climate-controlled classroom is limited, so please call or email for more information or to reserve a seat.
Chick
I could live in the backyard!
Coming up later in the year: classes in permaculture, backyard poultry, veggie gardening, drip irrigation, seed saving, exotic gingers for cooking, herbal teas and more! If there's a class you're interested in, or if you know a wonderful speaker or teacher, please let us know!  We'd love to just cram that calendar full!
Merry Christmas!

Please stop by and visit!  Have a glass of world-famous lemonade (or a beer!) -- we'd love to meet you!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Barrow
