Greetings!
If you're reading this, I must assume you haven't been carried away by a cloud of mosquitoes -- at least, not yet! We've not had to contend much with them this summer, which makes it seem even worse. But according to the powers that be, tomorrow's weather should drop temperatures enough to chase them away again.
It's a busy time here at Papershell! Friday marks the first delivery of shares from All We Need Farms. Stacey tells me that members can expect bok choy, chives, arugula, okra and farm-fresh eggs! Remember, the Rosenberg pickup is here on Fridays from 2-4pm.
We're also getting ready for some Halloween activities. Kids ages 4-10 are invited to join Cecilia Campos Merino's painting class from 9-10am on Saturday October 29. This class is $35 -- please call us to register.
Immediately afterward, we'll kick off the first annual Halloween Checkers Tournament! $1 is your entry fee for this 16-bracket, single-elimination contest with prizes for the top finishers. This contest is open to everyone -- download a copy of the rules here.
Then on Sunday, October 30 we'll celebrate some of the traditions that mark Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Kids are invited to color a calavera, or folk-art decorated skull mask. While you're here, you can munch on some Halloween candy or sip a St. Arnold's Santo beer.
The Barrow family celebrates its own Halloween tradition by serving our own special Fettucine Halloweenie, a tasty pasta dish that got its name when someone decided that "pumpkin cream sauce" sounded icky. You'll have to try it and let me know what you think!
Thanks for signing up for our email newsletter! Come see us soon! |

The Veggie Garden
Old King Cole is the big news in the veggie garden this month! Now is a great time to plant cole crops, also known as cabbages & kales. And did you know that all the ornamental varieties are edible too?
 | | Artichoke |
Vegetables that can be planted now include broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, mustard greens, collard greens, chard, lettuce (plants or seed) , carrot (from seed) and artichoke. Haven't grown artichoke before? Don't worry -- it's easy! Here's a great little fact sheet on how to care for this thistle relative.
 | | Cabbage Looper Caterpillar |
The fall garden can sometimes fall prey to a bad caterpillar known as the cabbage looper. As you might expect, he is fond of eating cabbages, but can also be found devouring snapdragons, sages, and dianthus. He's about 1-2 inches long, a light shade of green, and a voracious eater! For best results, hand-pick the caterpillars AND the moths or treat with a pesticide listed for vegetables, like Dipel Dust or Spinosad .

Next month, it should be cool enough to plant fava beans and I'm hoping to have onion sets ready to go before Thanksgiving. Stay tuned!

Day of the Dead Traditions
The tradition of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, dates back many centuries in Mexico and is a beloved 3-day ritual holiday celebrating our connections with loved ones who have died. In modern times, the holiday coincides with the Catholic All Saints and All Souls days (November 1 and 2), but its beginnings date back much further. Rituals include visiting the graves of the dead, preparing favorite foods and traditional treats like Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) and sugar skulls called calaveras. Gravesites are decorated with candles and yellow marigolds, known as cempazuchitl. Far from being a death-worshipping holiday, Dia de los Muertos actually symbolizes a loving connection with those who have gone before and the strong linkages that continue to exist between life and death. | | Marigold |
Although Dia de los Muertos is celebrated near the time we celebrate Halloween, the two traditions are very different in style and meaning. Read more about this interesting and meaningful holiday here.

Perennial Sale!
Fall is a great time to get perennials established, whether they are newly divided or purchased from the garden center! Cooler temperatures moderate the need for water somewhat, so the plant has a chance to establish a strong root system before next summer comes (when the roots will really be needed!)
To mark the fall season, we've put all our 1-gallon blooming perennials on sale, 40% off! These are full-size plants, some big enough to divide at planting time. All are selected for performance in this area, including coreopsis, rudbeckia, irises, echinacea, melochia, gaillardia, peacock gingers and more. Many are drought tolerant as well, making them a perfect choice to fill in some of those "blank" areas in your beds.
