Greetings!
You're invited to a party! Papershell is hosting the original model of Astroworld in our gallery for the month of September and to kick things off right, we're throwing a party. Stop by on Friday, September 9, from 4:00-6:30 to see the model, made by Ed Henderson in 1968. If you grew up in the Houston area, I'm sure you have memories of Astroworld to share. If not, you can enjoy the 70s-era snacks and cash bar (beer & wine).

Have you signed up for your fall veggies from All We Need Farm? I have! I'm excited to have my own basket of fresh veggies, every week from late October to around Christmas. Our farmer Stacey Roussel is growing all sorts of yummy vegetables this fall, including arugula, beets, beans, cabbages, carrots, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes and cushaw! It's been a long time since I had cushaw -- I'm going to have to dig around for the old recipe. Don't forget, you can pick up your share at Papershell on Fridays. While you're here, we can exchange our favorite vegetable recipes.
Speaking of fall veggies, our second Fall Gardening class is coming up on September 11. Sign up early -- space is limited. This class deals with cool season or very short season crops. Read more about fall veggies below.
At this writing, the weather gurus are still predicting rain for the end of this week, followed by a cool front. I hardly dare hope!
Stop by for a visit, and remember that our Facebook page is frequently updated with plants, events and miscellaneous goings-on.
Thanks for signing up for our email newsletter! Come see us soon! |

September is Hummingbird Month!
September marks the peak of the fall hummingbird migration. We have lots and lots of these little winged jewels flitting around at Papershell. No, they're not sipping at our feeders -- they seem to prefer all the flowers! Hummingbirds aren't picky eaters. They love pineapple sage, shrimp plants, lantanas, jatropha, trumpet creepers, crossvines, Texas coral bean, coral honeysuckles, and all kinds of sages and salvias. In my garden, they seem particularly fond of Justicia spicigera, or firecracker plant. This evergreen sub-shrub gets about 3-4 feet tall, and features bright orange flowers for much of the year. It's hardy to the low 20s, and tolerates partial shade or full sun. This very low maintenance plant is drought-tolerant once established and can be propagated easily by cuttings. Plant one in time for the fall migration! | | Firecracker Plant |
Want to learn more about hummingbirds? Check out the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory's Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza this Saturday and next, from 8:00am til noon. Watch bird-banders gently capture hummingbirds, record vital data about them, and then release them on their way. Maybe you'll even get to hold one in your hand when it's time for the release. The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is near Lake Jackson; click here for a map.

Fall Veggies
September is a wonderful time to get that fall vegetable garden started. It's still warm enough to grow squash, cucumbers & beans, but getting cool enough to plant broccoli, cabbages and cauliflower. You better hurry on those tomatoes, though. Most tomatoes take at least 70-80 days to reach maturity, and you want that to happen before the weather turns too cold for them. I know -- it seems like a dream! But 70 days from September 1 puts us in mid-November. If you want those home-grown tomatoes on your Thanksgiving table, you've got to start now. | | Wanted: A Good Home! |
We've still got a good selection of tomatoes, including Arkansas Traveler, Creole, Top Gun, Celebrity, Beefsteak, Better Boy, Big Beef, Solar Fire, Moby Grape, Yellow Pear, Carmello and more. For the real dirt on fall gardening, sign up for horticulturist Diana Liga's September 11 class. She'll cover soil preparation, planting techniques, and dates. As an added incentive, each participant in the class will receive a coupon for that day's purchases. For all classes, call (281) 232-4485 or email Elizabeth for more information.
